Gun Insurance called USAA

And you can actually type in the guns/accessories/scopes you want covered, too. Using the website is a lot easier than talking over the phone when trying to list firearms. :)

For what it's worth, $17,975.00 of coverage is going to run me $270.00 per year. I'm going to call and ask about "other damage" though, if they cover reloading problems (like if I kaboom a gun...) then I will be covering even my "cheap" guns through them.

My Homeowner's Insurance Covers This

My home owner's insurance covers everything inside my house at 100% of the replacement cost. I don't see where I'd have a need to get a seperate insurance policy just for my gun collection. :scrutiny:

I guess it would be useful for when I take a few guns to the range in case they were lost or stolen (not likely but possible I guess). I reload too but so far (cross fingers) I have never blown up a gun. :neener:

Still, for $400 a year, it might be worth it. I don't think I own a single gun worth less than $400. If I lost one gun and file a claim on it, the policy would have paid for itself.

Just thinking out loud folks. I know thats probably more dangerous than a loaded gun.

You might want to check that out. Most exclude items over $5,000 and have to be specifically listed. Or in my case yes covers 100% of all items "but" only certain amounts in specific categories.

Other categories are jewelry (no pieces over $5k) Had to get a separate policy for the wife and I's rings. Firearms up to $2k. Cash was also limited and had to be specifically disclosed. Large TV's or exotic furniture must be specifically covered as well.

One cannot "assume" anything unless you specifically ask, and in most cases get it in writing. I would have never found out unless I asked. The rep for USAA did say KB's were covered :D (not that I've had one) but I have had a few guns that were ruined by ammo and the manufacturer took care of it, but if they didn't I would have been out a few thousand in each case.

Doesn't seem like such a bad plan to me. I had never really thought about insuring your weapons for the KB factor but why not.

i have $10,000 worth of insurance on my guns, and accesories and such, how much do i pay? really i have no idea i told my wife to do it, and she did and she pays the bills. i am pretty sure that it is through usaa, becasue all of our insurance except for motorcycle is through them. they are a great company and if you or you know anyone in the military you should start using usaa, and the best part is that every year i get money back from them on the insurane that i paid in.

The true cost of an insurance policy is found only when a claim is made. Cheap rates are easily forgotten when the company's claims unit give you the schuck and jive. I've had cheaper insurance rates BUT I HAVE NEVER HAD BETTER SERVICE THAN WHAT USAA PROVIDES.

USAA is great. Best deal out there on auto insurance I believe.

Even if it wasn't I would still go with them, I have never talked to a company that was so ON IT as USAA is.

When I got my home owners policy the agent specifically told me that my firearms are covered on the policy.

What was really cool is I didn't even ask, she just brought it up on her own.

Now that’s service!! :D

well I logged into USAA last night and added my guns on a separate rider to my renters insurance. my cost is so low that it will take me 75 years to pay them what my guns are worth in premiums. now that was a deal I could not pass up.

I have been a USAA customer for 30+ years. Since I am eligible, all of my kids are also. They all have USAA accounts of one type or another. The only real hold out is my oldest daughter and son-in-law. He is too stubborn to listen to reason on their rates so they only have a savings account and a Visa from USAA. The rest all have car insurance, renters insurance, and do all their banking with them. Not only do we have all our insurance with them, and firearms and jewelry were no problems, we have a Roth IRA and other investments. Manage all the accounts on line with no problems.

If you rely on your homeowners/renters insurance to cover your firearms, be sure and check the limits of coverage for possessions that are "temporarily located off premises".

When I load up my car for a trip to the range, I was easily exceeding that part of my coverage by 200%. To address this, I separately insured my 4 most valuable guns.

NAK

Good point. The USAA firearms rider insurance covers them anywhere in the world. It's really an amazing policy.

I bought $10,000 worth of insurance through the NRA carrier, but that's because I didn't even think to ask USAA. When that policy expires I'll go with USAA. I have used them for the last 15 years, and they have been absolultely fantastic.

BTW, I believe that I paid about $200 for my coverage, so the price was pretty close to the same.

another +1 for USAA. been with them since the '80s.

I calleed another insurance agent who pitched me home owners insurance and asked about the gun collection. She said they will cover them under homeowners but need pics and serial numbers and discriptions of each gun and what it is worht in replacement cost because of any modifycations. I liked the idea they would insure for what I said they were worth! It would end up costiung me about $500.00 a year extra to insure all my guns and my watch collection. On the watches, she said I needed a bonified appraisal for any watch worht over $1500.00! So, even though say my Breitling for Bently 6.5, has serial numbers, and any body can go onlne and see what it is worht, she wanted me to have it aparaised!

An earlier post stated: "My home owner's insurance covers everything inside my house at 100% of the replacement cost. I don't see where I'd have a need to get a separate insurance policy just for my gun collection."

I thought that should be good enough for me, too. I've been with USAA for ALL my insurance needs since '75, and never a claim. Since I retired, I've accumulated a few nice guns and when I got my renewal for the missus' jewelery floater policy w/ USAA I took time to read the medium print on my core Homeowners Policy. It clearly states that the coverage on guns is limited to $2,000. There is, in fact, a laundry list of types of items in which the insurer places low limits (like jewelry, computers, etc.), regardless of how high your "contents of home" coverage is.

So, I went ahead and opted to purchase the gun insurance through USAA--a painless process online. Just be sure you know the terms of your core HO policy. The "contents coverage" may not cover your firearms to the level you need.

Welcome to the forum. When I started reading this thread, I immediately thought about the fact most (all?) insurers limit coverage on firearms, jewelry, etc. unless you buy a rider. And, you can't rely upon what the agent says. Good of you to catch this. Even if the thread is a bit dated, it might save someone from making a mistake.

Your car insurance cared about your firearms?
Both USAA and AAA write insurance policies on more than automobile insurance. I don't have any dealings with AAA except roadside assistance, but my homeowner's insurance is with USAA. They also insure boats, motorcycles, and have life insurance.

USAA and a free headstone...

the only two veterines benefits I'll likely ever benefit from...

and only one of them has anything to do with the gov't.

Lord help me if I ever have to turn to the VA for any health care.

That depends. It IS a hassle to get enrolled with VA. But VA will provide glasses and hearing aids, if you qualify. And you will get a complete physical every year -- something Medicare won't pay for, I understand.

#53...Bravo Zulu. I've been a USAA member since 1974...keep auto insurance and flood insurance with them, plus banking. But switched to AFI (AF Coop for us old fogies) in 1990. Have a rider with AFI for firearms and other special interest items. Lined up both AFI and USAA side by side....AFI won hands down, although both are super, customer-focused companies. If you're active or retired, check into AFI....USAA has just opened their membership (again) to anyone that is/has served. Well worth checking both out if you believe you're eligible.
