"Big 5", a sporting goods store in the west cost has a Mossberg 12-GA pump on sale for $250. It comes with 2 barrels, a 18.5 inch and a 28 inch. It can also take 3 inch shells.

I'm not sure if it's the 500 or not. I thought it was. But the guy said that it didn't come with any chokes and I don't know how to tell if the barrels can take them.

Frankly it sound like a "too good to be true" deal. Anybody more familiar with this deal?

It is almost certainly a model 500. I do not know why you think it is too good to be true, that is a typical sale price for a common combo from a big retailer who can buy in bulk, especially on a big sale weekend. The short barrel will be cylinder bore, in keeping with typical security barrels. Mine from twenty years ago had a fixed modified choke on the long barrel, and that is what is probably on this one.

You can tell by looking at the muzzle, if it looks like it has a sleeve inside with some notches, or has some knurling on the end, it is a removable choke. My feeling is that if you do not know how to tell, I doubt it would make much of a difference, especially when its that cheap. I have guns with interchangeable chokes, and am too lazy to ever change them. The fixed modified is usable for most stuff. The only time it should matter is if you waterfoul hunt, where you want tighter chokes, in which case, you do not want a standard 12 gauge anyway.

The Remington that Big5 also has on sale is nice, but may not suit the original posters reason. If he wants to bird hunt, and have a defense/fun barrel the Mossberg combo is a good way to go, otherwise, if he gets the $300+ Remington, he would have to spend another $100 or so to get another barrel for hunting. The Mossberg is fine for a light-medium duty gun, and as a southpaw, I like the safety better, and the loading gate is easier to deal with. Though they have has a lot of production runs, and some have been better than others, I would handle the gun first before buying it.

Ill agree with all of this. :)

I have the same combo. My 28" barrel came with three chokes. I paid $305 before taxes and "other fees" for mine. I've been very happy with it, so I would say $250 is a very good deal.

Big 5 has been running a rolling sale on shotguns for years. Mossbergs, Remingtons and Winchesters a different manufacture each week. I got the Mossberg 500A long magazine 20inch barrel years ago. They beat all the gun dealer in my area most of the time when they are on sale.

That combo was my first shotgun. I think thats the best bang for the buck available. I eventually sold my combo to a freind and bought the moss persuader for the same price for Home Defense. It's the same gun except it comes with only 1 20 in barrel, but the plus is that you get an extended mag tube

It used to sell for $200 and then $220 not all that long ago:( Still a good deal though, I got the 20ga combo in 2000.
