Automatic firearms--what's the draw?

Have you ever fired one? If so, you'd understand.

Yep and nope. I am not condemning them by any means. I almost didn't even start the thread because I felt it was a little taboo to question them and some members might misunderstand my intent. I just wanted to know what draws some towards automatic firearms.

Continuing my post, don't you like the pic? Nice girls and full autos do mix:

As said, free choice.

On your original post you referenced Heller and "what would you buy to prepare for November?" I'm not sure what your connection is between those two topics and full auto firearms.

I'm not sure what your connection is between those two topics and full auto firearms.

The only connection was that, in the "Heller" threads, there were posts about fully automatic guns, and those posts got me wondering what the draw was.

Pretty simple.

Different people like different things.

I could just as easily ask:

"Trap shotguns, what's the draw?"

As I find shotgun shooting boring.

I've never owned one.

With what they cost to buy, maintain and feed, I never will.

But a friend let me shoot a couple of his, once.

As noted, it's fun.

I have often wondered the same thing, whats the draw?

Maybe lugging around an M60 in high heat and humid conditions soured me on the military stuff. I swore when I got out of the service I was never picking up another ugly military gun. Oh, exuse me, weapon!

Not necessarily. Although we seem to be a small minority, some people just don't get all that excited by full-auto fire. And some of us think the rest of you are being a little bit silly. And yes, I've fired M2's, 240s, 249s, M60s, Mk19s, and M16A2s.

That being said, I would love to own a full-auto Ma Deuce and an FN MAG (M-240) simply because they are such excellent pieces of engineering and so brutally effective.

Edit: And obviously, the very idea of a belt-fed grenade gun like the Mk19 is just pretty wicked cool. :)

I had the chance to shoot NFA firearms in the past. "Awesome fun" doesn't even begin to describe it.

Macs in .380, 9mm and an Uzi in .45 i believe. (I think the .45 was an uzi at least and not a mac).

AR-15 Select Fire (OMG I WANT YOU!)

M14 Select Fire. (FA .308 + Offhand = FUN!)

M16A1 - $15,000
5.56 - $400/1000rds
Betamags - $250

The look on Sara Brady's Face as she watches on Youtube as you dump 100rds in 10 secs? Priceless.

Really, some things you can't buy with money. The Smile a FA NFA C3 weapon gives you after you dump some mags is truly PRICELESS!

# 1 reason most people want FA, MG.....
because someone say you can't just "have" one.

I'd have to say thats the number one reason. That combined with the fact that I just want to hold down the trigger and watch as it just keeps firing.

Hey I don't mind the FA stuff, it is fun, what I think is a total joke is the SBR and SBS stuff, honestly, I'd love to own a SBR without all the legal hoop jumping behind it.

It is the ridiculous laws surrounding the whole NFA... They are more social-class discriminatory than anything else.

Full Auto is simply great fun, that is enough to want them, add to that the fact that you cant buy them, and that the people should have the weaponry to counter the government and you have three really good reasons to want to own full auto weapons.
What makes them fun to shoot? Try throwing a Grenade into a trench, jump in and spray half a mag of 5.56 down the trench, Call the next guy forward, order him to throw a grenade past the next turn and clean it out with a half mag burst, continue commanding the cleaning of the trench and bunker and you will realise that it is a real good time. Or lie on the range with a FN MAG (Kulspruta 58 in swedish terminology, since it was adopted in 1958), along five other machinegun crews, pouring lead and tracers downrange at appearing targets, keeping them down. The song of the Machinegun, thumping in counterpoint to your rushing pulse.
The beltfed guns are made mostly for suppresive fire, and really fun to shoot in that role, 5-10 round bursts at the range is really satisfying.
Assault rifles like the FN FNC, H&KG3 or M16 is for the most part quite pointless to shoot in full auto mode on the range, though i have done that as well, full auto is useful in a targetrich or highspeed situation at short distances (clearing trenches or rooms in buildings for example), but at distances beyond 10-15 meters they really do a better job in singlefire. Full auto weapons or not should be my decision though, not the governments.

Because its not up to the government to decide what I should or shouldn't own.

Especially something that is protected constitutionally.

They're fun and exciting, the same way sky-diving and white-water rafting are; OTOH, "different strokes for different folks", as the saying goes; I could never understand what it is that draws some people to pimp up their car just so they go out on a public road to act like a jackass with it.

The only good thing about full autos is shooting tons of ammo down range in a short time. The only draw back is if you want to buy one you're looking at 11-19k for a ar or 15k for a AK. Not to mention you have to pay $200 extra for the tax stamp.

Because the 2nd Amendment is about the right of the people to form organized effective groups and challenge tyranny if necessary. Whether that is domestic, or an occupying force (UN or Chinese forces for example) or other forms of tyranny.

They need to possess at least up to date infantry weapons. Up to date for over a hundred years has included select fire.

With banks and corporations multinational, and many entities with no allegiance to any particular nation or thier views on human rights, or values, it could even be a variation of tyranny not commonly anticipated.
Security contractors and other agents can be hired do do things on other's behalf. Even government agencies can be pawns manipulated to do the bidding of other entities.
The world and power struggles can be complex.
We really don't know what the people of America will face, we just know the power must remain with the people to keep freedom alive. That is an America way of life.

The most important tool for freedom is the right to free speech. The second most important tool is the right to keep and bear effective arms.

because there is nothing like sitting in a turret behind Ma Deuce* letting brass fly

*same goes for the 240bravo

I'd love to own a full auto probbably in 9mm just for costs but there are a few reasons for me.

1.) Fun
2.) Uniqueness
3.) IMO a big part of the second ammendment was about being able to stand up to your goverment if they go to far. I belive I read it either here online or in a book "People should not be affraid of there goverment, there goverment should be afraid of them." Wich means to me we eleect and give the goverment there power the goverment should not forget they represent us there not our parnt. Well thats my 2 cents

Some years ago when I had advanced infrantry tranning I shot the various full auto military arms. I will admit that as a young man shooting the Browning 30 and 50 Cal machine guns was fun. But what I enjoyed the most was the 30 Cal BAR when going thru the pop up target feild. When I found out what the life expency time of a BAR man in combat was I was not to impressed with my shooting a ferfict score with the BAR. Now the cost of a full auto firearm and the cost of ammo is far more that I can spend . Now that one can purchase accurate AR 15 and 10 model semi auto rifles I have ben tempted to get one but I have trubble keeping up makeing ammo for my bolt action prairie dogs rifles. So I ll pass on all the fun with the auto rifles. One thing I remember from military tranning when we were armed with M-1 rifles , do your dambest to take out the full auto arms..
