Pistol- caliber carbines

"The OP says he's going to be doing a lot of ATVing and Jeeping in remote areas. I suggested a 2000 could be a low-observability, easy-packing piece that could be rapidly brought into action if needed. A small, fairly ungunlike case could store the 2000 on an ATV, hidden in plain sight."

Ck the reg.'s where you are. Around here, weapons carried in or on a 4 wheeler et al, should be unloaded.

Another gun to consider is the Ruger P4C or the P9C, 40 caliber or 9mm. A friend has one, it's fun to shoot and reasonably accurate, works well with optics, and in 40 cal, magazines can be had that hold 20 rounds. I'm sure the 9mm mags hold more, but haven't looked into that. Those are the good points. The downside is that the trigger, usually not the best on Ruger guns, is absolutely ABYSMAL on the carbines. 20-25 pounds, and gritty, and I can't find anyone who works on them. Everyone who has shot this gun tries to fire it, then starts looking for the safety to take it off, when it's not on. AWFUL trigger. Aside from that, it's a hoot to shoot, and 20 round mags go fast. Oh yeah, and the empties come out sideways at about 50 miles per hour, hot and sharp. Unchecked, they'll clear 20 feet easily, and in gravel they'll bounce for another half-mile.

Personally, I'd prefer a 10mm on an AR-15 platform, but the price and availability have kept me from investigating that choice further. A modern-day version of an M-1 Carbine in a hotter caliber would make a great pig rifle, chambered in something like 10mm, or 45 Super!

My favorite PCC is the Sterling Mk. 6, brought into the U.S. years ago through various importers. Loaded up with 9mm. from WWB, those 36 round mags were a hoot to run through. I even used old STEN mags (often purchased for around $5.00 a piece), loading them up with a neatly designed AUSTEN mag loading tool. Never any jams, failures to feed, etc.; just minutes of pure shooting fun (that's about how long the ammo lasted).

Personally, I'm more interested in semi- autos. The ammo for those weapons is usually cheaper, too.
There's a place for those, but you didn't limit your original question to them, so you got some of us thinking lever guns were in the mix. Since we're talking semi-auto's, and no one's mentioned them yet, how about a....

HI POINT! :what: ;)

i love my little Hi point 995! i gotta bring it to the range next time. im shooting too much pistol, not enough rifle

For a inexpensive plinker and home defense weapon I have a Hi-Point 40 S&W carbine. :D
Uses the same round as my handguns and is very reliable and accurate but does not like steel cased ammo.

I think of a pistol caliber carbine as being a logical companion to a handgun.

Better range and accuracy, (preferably) uses the same magazines, and often costs less than the handgun it's the companion to.

If only there was a pistol caliber carbine to go with a USP45 (USC doesn't take the USP45 mags)...

Although in the near future I intend to purchase a Glock 34 as a bit of a 'project gun', and intend to get a Sub-2000 to go with it.

Outside of the lever action rifles and carbines we have here (something to the tune of 7 or so) I also have an UZI carbine that I like. What is nice about it is that back when I was farming, with the folding stock, it was a VERy compact skunk gun that went along in a tractor from time to time. Other things I like about it is the high capacity, low recoil, minimal muzzle blast and no muzzle flash at night. For a shooter that wants something more than say a .22 but is still twitchy about the noise and muzzle blast of something like a .223, a pistol caliber carbine is a contender for them.

PS90 for me. Very flat shooting out to about 200yds, minimal recoil, very short/manueverable, easily fired from prone or with one hand, incredibly easy to strip/maintain, no muzzle flash, minimal muzzle blast, 50rd mag.

And the companion FN Five-seveN USG, good to 100yds w/no holdover:

ruger makes a nice 45acp carbine.i like the look and feel of the berretta carbine but it twists in your hands every shot

Okay i'm having what is known as a brain fart. What 45acp carbine does Ruger make? I can't for the life of me remember one.

My Sub-2000 stows easily in places where nobody would look for a rifle. I can go backpack camping and have a short-to-mid-range weapon with a scope and it isn't readily identifiable that I am carrying a rifle.

It's death to pop cans. It's fun to shoot. 9mm is cheap to reload. And you can stick in those Glock-18 30-rd mags and go to town.

And, don't get me wrong. I bought the Sub-2000's predecessor, the Sub-9, and used it for a carbine course (for which it was MUCH better suited than another shooter's SKS). I had SN 11X.

An SKS on a carbine course? Now that's one determined fellow right there.
