Here's the thing about South Africa - pretty much everyone is pro-gun, except the millionaires and politicians. Walk up to anyone on the street, ask him if he thinks he should have a gun, you'll get a 'yes'. Ask him if he minds his neighbours, coworkers, whatever having guns, and chances are you'll get a 'not at all' there.

Lietmotif;
A guy I went to college with was gassing up his boat at a dock one day and heard a female voice behind him say to another person ..."I feel naked here without my .45 on my hip." She was a South African girl over here as part of an academic exchange program. She didn't go home. He married her.

My ex-boss is from Rhodesia...he won't call it Zimbabwe. His family lost their station after elections. He is a US citizen now and crazy as heck..also one of the best handguns shooters I've known.

You guys are different. Viva la difference1

Pretty interesting comments.
I've always thought that if you can't trust someone with a gun, what can you really trust them with?

I cringe every time I see someone posting something derogatory about those in other countries.

Agreed, especially with what happened in France this week. Doesn't matter where it happened, it is just terrible that it did happen.

I too work with South Africans, one of them is becoming a US citizen very soon, he is very interested in getting back into shooting with us here at work.

I work with people from all over the world, quite the perspective regarding firearms.

<<<<< Ex South African . . . enjoying the good life in the USA and VERY happy that I can avail myself of the protection provided by 2A . . .. . especially down here in 'gun crazy FL' :D

Greetings from Hungary!

That is somewhere in East Europe:)

Maybe we have some really sick gun constructions because we have to use our junk gun law's loopholes.

For example, what do you think, what is this?

well, at least it looks better than that:

and both are less-lethal guns firing rubber ball projectiles and tear-gas rounds, right, gvass?

sticking to wood and steel
lucky you. under Russian gun laws, i can own a 12 gauge pump, but for everyday carry i have only the 4-barreled abortion of a gun pictured below, that fires 15mm rubber slugs at 85 Joules of muzzle energy.

you are more lucky than me in this aspect. Its Switzerland you cannot get a carry permit since 1999 ....

the only way to get one (to carry gun, knife, less lethal etc) you need to prove that you are death threathened by somebody, or proove that you are so wealthy that somebody could assault you for your money.

Max Popenker won:))

"and both are less-lethal guns firing rubber ball projectiles and tear-gas rounds, right, gvass?"

Yes, it is.

But we also banned from any united cartridge ammunition, so our traumatic guns we have to load the bullet (from the front) and the blank ammo (from the back into Cylinder) separately.

But now we can have "shall-issue CCW" for them, as gas-alarm guns. (Big development, until 2004 we had to have the same (hard to get) licence for gas-alarm as for real guns, the only difference, it was shall-issue.)

And the Russian OSA "derringers" were in my hand (IWA), and I loved them. Very compact, very light, with interesting engineering inside.

the last in less-lethal guns: the OBREZ ;)

this sawed-off version of standard 12Ga Izh-43 SxS shotgun fires 12 gauge less lethal ammunition with 21mm (about .83 caliber) rubber balls from 35mm cases. Barrels have built-in obstructions to avoid shooting 'hard' projectiles.

and yes, it is legal to buy, own and carry (if you can conceal one, that is) under "less-lethal self-defense weapon" license.

welcome to all our friends abroad. texas has some pretty relaxed rules for purchase and ownership of firearms, so it always seems strange to go abroad and hear how different things are. i went on a hunt to the south island of new zealand for my first international trip and had to check in at the airport police station in auckland on arrival. i had the paper all filled out and handed it to the officer, who was very polite. then, he asked for my gun permit:evil:. i told him that there was no such thing in texas, that if i wanted a gun, i just went to the store and bought one and took it home. he just seemed astounded by that possibility. no further hitch in the proceedings occurred, so i went my way with the appropriate license and enjoyed a great hunt near queenstown. the people there told me they had to have a police approved storage site in the home or could face confiscation of the firearms, and other licensing hassles. i have seriously thought about hunting red stag in scotland, but the paperwork to bring the gun scares me off. i would like to go moose hunting in finland, but how does one get an invitation to hunt and have time to pass the shooting test required for hunting? i guess i will stick to africa. i do realize that importing a gun here for one of you has to be about the worst thing in the world and wish it was not so.
