ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A 42-year-old man smashed in the front door of his mother's home Monday evening and was met by a bullet from her .38 caliber pistol, Albuquerque police reported.

The son was hit once in the chest and is listed in critical condition at University of New Mexico Hospital. The mother, who is 61, was not arrested because police said the shooting was an apparent case of self-defense.

The shooting at 11516 Freeway Place NE happened during the dinner hour. Neighbors said they immediately knew something was wrong.

"I was sitting inside, and I heard some gunshots, what I thought were gunshots, but I've been hearing a lot of bottle rockets, everything else," neighbor Robert Milligan told KRQE news 13. "I came running out; I see the police hauling butt."

Police told News 13 the son went to his mother's home on Monday to retrieve some papers. When she refused to let him in he lost control and broke down the front door, according to police.

The mother told police that's when she fired her .38 caliber handgun. Police on the scene couldn't recall any recent domestic violence calls at the home.

Neither the mother's nor her son's names have been released.

At first, I thought this was a case of mistaken identity. Wrong. Seems like there's some history here.

lesson learned.....

"Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you."
EX 20:12

It really is that simple

I once went to a call where a woman was shot in the chest by her 25 year old son during an argument. He shot her with an AR-15 from a position behind her and to her left. Sort of her 8 o'clock position.

The bullet entered her chest in the left armpit and exited above her left breast. The bullet continued through the interior wall of their trailer, out through the exterior wall of the trailer, through the trailer next door, and it buried itself in a tree. The exit wound on the woman's chest was rather large, I would say it was about an inch high and 3 inches wide. The entrance wound was about a quarter inch high by about 3/4 inches wide.

The son had been discharged from the Marines less than a year before due to psychological problems. There were guns, knives, swords, all sorts of weapons everywhere. He was one guy who had no business with a gun. I wouldn't have trusted him with a super soaker. You could see it in his eyes, this guy was NUTS.

As Mom always said "I brought you into this world I can take you out".

On a more serious note. I feel pretty bad for both parties involved, they are going to be dealing with some serious mental issues for a long time.

happened during the dinner hour.

Interesting that everyone eats dinner at the same time there. I wouldn't fit it - I eat around 9 or 10pm. I hope the guy either dies or makes a full recovery - it'd be very had on both of them if he's crippled/maimed/vegetable - who's gonna take care of him - his mother?

I'm willing to bet there is more to the story.
I think you are right. It's way too bizarre on the face of it. There's gotta be some history or something else that is pertinent. It would really be ironic if the son had a key to the door...

For once, I'm glad my mom doesn't keep guns around (lives in MD so can't carry anyway). Not that I would ever kick her door down, but she slaps the hell out of me for using the occasional four letter word, and I've been on my own for 5 years now!

I've always been secretly relieved that my mother didn't take more interest in dad and I's "hobby." She's a mean drunk!

Just kidding... my mother doesn't drink...

Damn i'd never think someone 61 would have gun. thats nice though for protection. well in self defense is this lady gonna do time in jail for what she did? im just wondering?

All my mom used was a wooden spoon. Maybe if she'd shot me once or twice I'd have straightened up quicker.

i'm not surprised....my mom had to draw down on my youngest brother a few years ago, not for herself, but for my younger brother, who was trying to fend him off. a .38 snubbie in the face got his attention.

That's what I call tough love.... I bet the guy that broke down the door has a laundry list of problems in his past.

yikes.

I don't think they'll be getting along too well from now on.

Doesn't sound like they were getting along before though either.

You know, being a parent all I can feel after reading this is total sadness. I could not live if I did something like that. But that's emotion talking.

Now in real life this guy could of been a total scum bag that would beat or worse his mother in a second and not think twice about it.

Either way, that poor woman still shot her son and that can not feel good. :(
