It seems that the general consensus would be that saiga is one of the best bang for the buck, so I've got my sights fixed on this particular one at classicarms

I'm lookin at the "SAIGA AK- 47 RIFLE DEAL" for 550 bux and wondering.. what does "SIDE RAIL SCOPE MOUNT" mean? Does it mean i have to buy a scope mount or does it comes ready to mount a scope on to? I'm tempted to buy an eotech or aimpoint .. and then maybe a hunting scope if I decide to go hunting... does anyone know what kind of scope mounts I may need to get?

Any comments on how well this would work w/ hunting + target shooting?

Does anyone know of any website that sells cheap 10 rd mags that will work w/ this?

Please link me to another thread if this has been covered - I've been looking up aks on this site for the past few days now... enough to get me really interested in buyin this pre-converted saiga :D

new questions:

so which ammo is cheaper? I figured the .223 might be cheaper, but I think i've heard otherwise?
is the .223 version much more accurate? like much much more?
Can i assume classicarms is the best place to buy it? if not, where else is good?
I'd like to get a 30 round clip or two.. how well will it work w/ it? Or do you guys think the ones made esp for saigas are workin great?
-I really dont' wanan tweak w/ a perfectly workin item =\ whatever ends up requirin less work in the long run heh.. converting or just buyin saiga items...
I assume .223 would mean it's not very good for hunting.. but if it's hella more accurate, I'm game :D

The "SIDE RAIL SCOPE MOUNT" is nothing but a rail riveted to the side. It is designed to mate up with pretty much any communist military scope mount.

They come with 10 round mags from the factory (at half the price for the rifle you are talking about), and make excellent utility guns.
Factory Saiga w/10 round mags.

Do yourself a favor and by a factory Saiga instead. You can convert it later, if you wish, for much less money and with better quality.

It should come with a 10 round mag, if it is a 308, it will be an 8 round mag. check your state for mag capacity; in Texas, you can fire a saiga with a 100 round mag if you have one. EXCEPT DURING DEER SEASON!!!! Your mag better not hold than 5 rounds, and telling them your tag is for pigs, varmints, turkeys, whatever, WILL NOT MATTER TO THE GAME WARDEN!!!! he will write you a ticket, if that mag is over 5 rounds, during deer season.
The side rail is incorporated into the side of the receiver. So what you want
to do, is get a russian type flip over rail, short or medium height.
it will be a weaver type rail that goes up and over the top. then you can mount a holo sight, red dot, or small scope. I recommend a small fix power scope, like a 4 or 6 power, max. If you are getting a 308, or especially a 223 version, they are more accurate than just about any AK type rifle out there, and putting up a red dot, or holo sight is robbing you of it's accuracy potential.
look at the third part down, on the left side of page;
http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/ItemListing.aspx?catid=1005
that mount slides onto your side rail, then locks down tight, by throwing that lever that you see on it...

Your question should be: Is the .223 cartridge more or less accurate than the 7.62x39 or other.

Same question for hunting calibers.

I'd really caution you again about buying that particular model.

You can buy a brand new Saiga at half the price, and convert it yourself, in a way you know is done properly.

<trying to be high road here - read between the lines>

Reports are that those rifles do NOT have the bullet guides installed. It's a cheap and easy part to install, but if you have to work on it why not do the whole thing yourself.

centerfiresystems has saigas in stock right now @ $299, add about $100 for parts and you're done.

ya haha thx for the advice.. i'm really considering the .223 saiga now for.. somethin slightly over 300 i think..

I have both a 7.62x39 and a .223. I shoot the x39 much more often do to ammo prices. I find x39 much cheaper.

What are you looking to hunt with it?

I agree with the others that you should pass on that particular model.

i got a Saiga .223 with a 20'' barrel and it's a great gun, very simple (as all AK), i dont plan to convert it yet, but i'll add a skeleton stock and one of those russian scopes, as for now this is how it looks

soon to be 23 lol.. but just starting with guns since the paychecks just started rollin above the negatives :D

I wouldn't know what to hunt for.. deer hunting is quite popular around here but it might be too much patience for me - just something I was thinking of maybe doing later on

up until now, i've just been usin a gamo cfx to get rid of squirrels in our attic

IF you are going to hunt deer I would get the 7.62x39 or perhaps the saiga .308. If you will do more shooting and plinking than hunting (which sounds like it may be the case) I would get the 7.62x39. The ammo is much cheaper and it will take a deer if you do your part.

I'm unable to find any .308 saigas. Can you give me a pros'n cons b/w the 7.62x39 vs a winchester .308? I do know that .308 is much more popular for hunting - is it much more expensive as well?

From left to right: 30.06 7.62 NATO (aka 7.62x51 or .308 Winchester) and on the far right, the 7.62x39

The 7.62x39 takes less materials (and cheaper ones) to manufacture and has many former state owned factories to shove it out.

The .308 uses more material for manufacturing and most of the factory output is going to the middle east these days. . .

308 ammo is off the wall expensive now, 3 years ago, you could buy a south african battle pac of 140 rounds, for 30 bucks. That is going to cost you proly over 100 now, for sure at least 80.
unless you know you are going for game over 300 yds away, the 762.39 ammo will do just fine. Outside of 300 yds, the russian round loses way too much speed and trajectory , really fast.
