A punt gun?

I'm reminded of the American at Oxford. He was so keen to be part of everything that they put him on the Regatta Committee.

"You'll be in charge of the small craft. We'll need about 20 punts and about a dozen canoes."

At the next meeting he reported, "I've got the girls all lined up, but I can't find anyone who even knows what a panoe is.":p

The founders couldn't have wanted citizens to own these. They are obviously not meant for civilian use- they could take down a whole squadron of airplanes if you loaded them with 50 BMG boolits!

We're talking crew-served scatter gun here !

I"ve ssen them hanging in gun shops over the years, but never saw one fired. WOW !!!!!!!

As I can recall punt guns were mainly mounted on river boats and boats in general in the early days of our nations history. I remember an old timer telling me a story about them. He said they were often used in pairs. One with a blank charge to scare the birds in the air and the second loaded with 2lbs of shot to take out an entire flock. They were so effective that they devistated bird populations in those days so much that they were no longer allowed to be used for hunting. They were too big and bulky for any other use so they stopped making them and just more or less dissappeared. You can still find a few here and there just like the one in the video. They are cool indeed
.

I remember reading a very interesting article about these guns years ago. I do not remember anything about being mounted on river boats( large steamboats) but on small special boats for sneaking up on birds, with mount for the gun, often a rope type affair to tie the gun to the boat.
It mentioned a double barrel version one barrel being percussion primed the other being flintlock, the theory was that the trigger released both locks at the same time, the percussion firing instantly to catch birds on the water, the flintlock having a slower lock time fires a fraction of a second later, catching surviving birds as they leap into the air to escape. Personally I have only seen one punt gun, on display in a gun shop, and I think it was a cartridge arm, looked like a big bolt action, probably an 8 ga or larger.

you either get loads of duck or nothing at all:D
couple of nutters still use them but thats norfolk and they are all a bit odd up that part of the country:D

What's the best load for home defense, with a punt gun?

Air? :D

But what about those 120mm tank cannon shotgun shells? Aren't they being used anymore? Seems like they'd be one heck of an anti-personel weapon.
