Folks I need your input. I am a long gun man whose sole pistol is a .44Mag Desert Eagle. My wife amd I went pistol shopping for her the other day. She has small hands so we are looking at a .380 auto. Specifically, she likes the Taurus PT 138 Pro Millenium. I could not find any info out there re reliability easy of take down for cleaning etc. Any thoughts on this model or any other reccomendations of another pistol will be appreciated. Thanks jll

Congratulations to your wife for getting her own pistol! I have a Bersa Thunder .380 that I like. Grips are neither too small nor too large, it conceals reasonably well (although I usually carry in a Jagwear belt pouch), not too heavy, and good accuracy. And they're easy to disassemble and reassemble, not to mention they're not terribly expensive.

Jll, when your thread title said "Gun for wife", I thought you were making a trade! I didn't know whether to congratulate you or what.

Seriously, I wouldn't trade mine. I mean neither of them, gun or wife.

I was at the range a few days ago, a fella 15 feet away was sighting in his hand gun. When he fired, I felt it. I asked him what it was, Desert Eagle .44 mag.
Way too much for me.
Let her decide what fits, and what she's comfortable with.

Take her to a range that has rentals to see with what she is comfortable. My 4'11" wife handles a 1911 well but is more comfortable with something a bit less powerful.

Like many I could come up with a short (or long) list of my favorite .380 auto's, however it realy ends up being a personal feel sorta thing. If she likes the Taurus, how it feels in her hands, the ergonomics of it, etc. I see nothing that should stop her from getting that one.

Reliability these days are pretty good for most main stream manufactured guns. There are some problems noted with just about any gun and any manufacturer from time to time, but for the most part , odds are you will buy a good working gun .

If you want a Taurus Millennium Pro, get the Model 111BP-12 9mm.

9mm model compared to .380 model:

Both hold 12+1 rounds
Barrel length is identical
Overall length is identical
Weight is identical
Suggested retail price is identical
The width of the .380 is just over 1/10th of an inch greater
The height of the 9mm is just over 2/10ths of an inch greater

9mm rounds offer noticeably superior stopping power.
There's almost no difference in felt recoil between the 9mm and .380.
.380 rounds are noticeably more expensive than 9mm's, often up to a third higher.

Conclusion: The 9mm is a no-brainer.

I let my wife shoot a bunch of my semi-autos and we even rented a few I didn't have. She limp wristed all the polymer guns we rented and even my alloy framed Sig P228, which I had actually bought for her.......kinda.

She eventually chose a revolver which turned out to be a great choice. She bought a S&W 642 .38 Spl and shoots it wearing a shooting glove for practice. Its great for carry.

If she's planing on carrying it you might also look at a hammerless revolver. Mine had a real problem with the gun snagging on the various garments she wears. One thing that shouldn't be done is a purse carry gun IMO.

Sounds like your headed down the same path I am.

I too started with the PT-138. She didn't like it. She couldn't rack the slide. She couldn't manipulate anything. The mag release was too tight for her and the slide release was too tight for her.

She then tried my Bersa .380 and fell in love. She can manipulate all the releases and she likes the fact that when you slam a new magazine home it releases the slide for her.

Another complaint from her about the Taurus was the weight. It's a double stack .380 and holds 12+1. She has very weak arm and hand strength and the Taurus was just too tight for her.

go to the range and have a rental orgy. rent everything they got that's neither small in size nor overbearing in caliber. my fiance started on a walther p22. then she moved up to an XD-9sc for home/car/carry. then she got a CZ SP-01 and turned into a steelknocker. :)

Did the same two years ago

I took the advise of my fellows here. She picked this (Walter PPKS Aristocrat from TALO). She loves it and shots it. Let her pick her own. Sorry, can't seem to get the jpeg photo into the thread.

Have her shoot a Kahr CW9. It's a 7+1 shot 9mm. Much better than a .380, still small and concealable and easy to hold on to.

I'm considering one (or a CW45) myself.

My wife shot my gun for the first time ever shooting a gun. She did not like the feeling. She was shooting a 357 but with a 38 in. Maybe she will try again. :)

Seriously (who me?) any of the newer design 9mm, polymer frame, single stack, double action guns are worth looking into. I think a lot of women will have problems securly holding double stack grips on a 9mm.

Well, maybe....

I had a Bersa 9mm, and just recently acquired a new XD-9. No problems at all with the grip; in fact, the XD feels like it was literally made for my hand. I have sort of large hands for a woman, I suppose, but I certainly would suggest that a woman looking for a gun at least pick them up and handle them to see how they fit.

I got the XD this past weekend after a very uncomfortable event with three guys threatening me as I walked the dogs last Thursday night. I got through it fine and they left with the same number of holes they came into the neighborhood with, but I got to thinking later about the math. Three guys, 8 rounds of .380.... suddenly a double stack magazine sounded like a wonderful idea :uhoh:

You're very wise to upgrade to a high capacity 9mm. Double the magazine capacity and considerably more stopping power than the somewhat anemic .380. ;)

Which model did you get? Black or bi-tone?

I like my weapons like I like my coffee. All black. :D

Except for my m66-3. It's pretty spiffy in stainless.
