I've lately been going through a few bricks of Remington .22lr of various types- Thunderbolt, Golden Bullet, Subsonics, Target, etc…

I'm finding that the outside of the spent cases have rather large burn marks- roughly .25" diameter- on one side after firing. A couple cases have even had a notch of brass missing from the rim.

None of the other brands of ammo I'm using display this phenomenon, so I'm guessing it is not an issue with the chamber of the rifle (Savage MKII, ~5000rds fired).

Anyone else noticed this, or have any data to indicate that the Remington ammo might be a slightly smaller diameter than other brands?

I'm going to make the current brick my last of Remington, as I imagine that the blown off bits of brass are doing the bore no good whatsoever, and I like the rifle quite a bit.

I have noticed it in my model 60's. I think it is just operation of the gun. It doesn't happen in my bolt guns so I don't know why it would happen in yours. I have shot thousands of rounds of remington and have not had problems yet, thunderbolt ammo is accurate to boot.

You can stop shooting it if you like but I don't think there is any problem.

I'm not 'exactly' sure, but I think it has something to do with the brass that Remington uses not being soft enough. There is not enough pressure created by the ignition to expand the brass and create a good enough seal on the inside of the chamber.

I've noticed it in the last several of bricks of Rem. subs, won't shoot any of their other stuff, too dirty!!!!

I have the same with the occassional round of federals, but generally when I get a round like that I also got a distint pop along with a good deal amount of smoke out of the ejection port. I always blow down the barrel to see if I get smoke out the muzzle, good sign to see that there are no squibs I think.

the brand says it all; remmy ammo, except for their stuff mady by eley, is so inconsistent. Inconsistent, primer loading, powder loads, crimps, bullet seating, etc. A lot of times, you can just spin a bullet with your fingers, in thetop of a case. Just bad in my opinion. I have stopped using remmy alltogether.

Very dirty and inconsistent! I have but one gun, a Marlin 60 that groups well with it but the down side doesn't out weigh the upside!

I avoid it now as do many others for the same reasons.
