While this is true, gun laws are a good indicator of the mentality and other laws of the state. Well, except Vermont. I don't know how that one happened.

Now if you think I'd have missed that for anything, you don't have a brain in your head. So I couldn't carry a gun. Big deal. I didn't carry a gun for most of my life. Not only did I survive without a gun, I can't say I really missed having one either.

That seems to resolve matters for anyone who doesn't see the world as you do: such a person doesn't have a brain in his or her head. Perhaps they might better be called openminded.

My experience, especially in the case of Chicago, is that their repressive gun control laws are a symptom of a general philosophy of life.

Agreed. It's part of the basis for my aversion to such places.

Another and related part is that those places have the effect of imposing their restrictions on all aspects of travel to or through them. For example the Chicago and Washington, DC, bans mean that someone who is traveling by car must be without the means of self-defense throughout the entire trip from start to finish.

Yet another part is that some of us without brains in our heads believe that we ultimately are responsible for our own lives and our family's. We are not preoccupied with guns even if some other people insist that it's so. We brainless people include those who think that there are bad people in the world who do harm to good people.

For example, although I have no brain in my head I managed to learn that the District of Columbia consistently is more prone to violent crime than any state in the USA. The D.C. police have even established a sanitary zone there in which it stops and frisks people. As another example, Chicago's Mayor Daley has declared that violent crime is rampant. The Governor of that state (I figured out that it's Illinois, which is quite an accomplishment for a brainless person) has volunteered aid to combat the city's violent crime. Since one source of violent crime is the Chicago police department, according to newspaper accounts of its antics, it seems wise for brainless people like me to stay away even if the food is real tasty.

There's two types of travel:

a) for work.
b) for pleasure

For work, I go where I have to go. Unfortunately.


For pleasure, I have a list of places I will NOT go, because I like breathing and intend to do so for at least a few more years. Yes CA, NY, HI, and DC are on this list.

You can say history all ya want, but the 2 days I spend in one of those places, my chances of remaining alive are diminished. Not worth it IMO.

Yep. Won't go through MA. I'm just too messy. There's no way I can really be sure I don't have one stray hollowpoint rolling around in the trunk somewhere, and knowing my luck, I'd get popped for driving an ugly car and the friendly officer would decide to turn out my upholstery looking for drugs. (Actual rationale given by an OK State Trooper for wanting to search my car after a speeding stop: "We see a lot of drugs coming from New Mexico.")

MA is just too barbaric to risk travelling there. All those states up there are really tiny, anyway. Driving around MA isn't that much of a hassle.

I don't have a single friend in Chicago. I wouldn't want one. Since I have as friends, only people whom I respect I don't see how I could. Don't WANT to meet anyone in Chicago. I want to see my mother at Christmas and get out, FAST.

There's nothing good to be said for Chicago. I go there ONLY because my mother is old and won't be around that much longer. Well, maybe the architecture, but in the absence of a few well placed neutron bombs, there's no way to enjoy it.

Repressive gun controls are merely a symptom of the fundamental moral and intellectual rot with which that cess pit is afflicted.

If you are not a resident of IL then you don't need a FOID. FOID is only for IL residents.

That's a bit of hyperbole. I've been all over WDC and never worried. If you go into some areas acting like a goof then someone might call you on it.
Take with a grain of salt what someone tells you , particularly coming from an FBI agent. Some FBI agents are pure chickens and scared of their own shadows. I had one working for me on my drug task force that spent more time in the bathroom than the briefing room prior to going out on drug buys, and he was just doing surveillance. He refused to do buys because he would get physically sick. When I kicked him off the task force even his own field office buried him because he was useless. I've worked with many good FBI agents in the past 37 yrs and I've worked with a whole lot of them that were a legend in their own mind - completely useless when the chips were down. The average BU agent is far from being a tactical genius. Just because some "FBI agent" said it doesn't carry one ounce of weight.

I try to avoid visiting certain places but that isn't absolute. I do absolutely refuse to live in one of those places.

Someone would have to offer me an outrageously, and I mean outrageously, high salary for me to even consider a non-gun friendly place to live. If anyone in Jersey wants to pay a school teacher a half a mil per year, I'll leave the guns behind.

I have had to travel thru WV and WI on occasion.

I notified a couple bigger cities Chamber of Commerce that I would be passing thru as fast as possible. No stops for gas, lunch or anything else.
I suppose they could care less. If we could get 15-20 such calls/emails/week for a few months they might get the picture.

For those that say "they dont make the laws" yea I know, but they can get going and help to get carry/reciprocity laws passed and vote for better legislators.

In the Marines I was stationed in 29 Palms Cali....and if there is one state that needs to issue CCW permits...etc..etc it's CA.
Being a PA gent that is one state I'll never visit again..no offense to the NorCal folks.

Fair enough, but for some of us it's not, strictly speaking, about sport. Sport is a side benefit. It's about the attitude toward ordered liberty and self-government.

No. I spent too many years in Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut and know too many people in these states simply to avoid them because of bad gun laws. Also I travel a lot for work (for example I'm in NY, NJ and MD quite frequently for work), so it's not really an option. Actually if you live in the Northeast and want to travel to nieghboring states its rarely an option for anyone. Other parts of the country might have that luxury, but not here.

There are too many places to go in this marvelous country where I'm not treated like some blood-crazed lunatic waiting to go off to waste my time and contribute my hard-earned to the perpetuation of my own treatment as a subhuman to ever voluntarily enter any of those states. I refuse to pay for that kind of treatment.

My flaky sister who lives in California (too much LDS in college, knowwhatimean?) can come to visit here if she feels the need, but there's no way I'd go out there...

Absolutely! We live in Oregon and both the wife and I have CCW permits. I've had either a badge or a CCW permit for more than forty-five of my seventy years. When we go on vacation each year we circumvent the PDRK by going out of our way east and then south to get into Nevada and then on southeast to Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming. We pack pistols concealed and neither of us would ever spend a minute or a nickel in that great state of ignorance aka California.
