Anyone know what that's for? Production jigging? Stacking/locking? Discovered it in a lousy pic of a rifle I no longer have, so can't examine rifle directly. I'm sure it's something dumb and obvious, but help me out here.

...and if you believe that, please go get me a flagpole key and a left-handed smoke-shifter.

Mike

The old mauser 98's had a quick detach part that allowed one to switch the sling to "parade" position (in the hole you showed). I have two of them on my Mauser M98/22's.

Here is a picture of a WWI style Gew 98 Sling. The metal bit on the end is the "quick detach". It is just a beefed up version of the "QD" swivels currently used.

Here is another view of the QD;

The other metal loop at the 12 O'Clock is a a quick tensioner. The front swivel on the Gew 98(full length WWI version) was on the middle barrel band, the upper band had a small hook on it. The Soldat could hook that loop and secure the sling out of the way or un hook it to carry the rifle without having to slide the adjustment buckle every time.

The pic below, lower image shows the hook on the upper band.

The rifle in this pic is a Gew 88, but the sling set up was essentially the same for the '98

Wow, thanks. Not having the rifle anymore, just from the pic, I thought maybe it had something to do with the floorplate release. But I couldn't figure out how it might work, remembering only fuzzily how the floor plate dropped down.

I was the one who did the sporterizing on it... the orginal barrel was bent.

I surely regret it now, but at the time, in the 60s, milsurp rifles were being sporterized left and right*. It was "the" thing to do with milsurps. I had it rebarreled to .30-06 with a surplus 2-groove Springfield barrel. I cut out the stock for a Williams peep rear, but the rifle wasn't accurate enough to justify the peep sight --running around 3" at 100 yards --so I took it off and tapped the barrel for a regular open rear sight.

Gave it to one of my sons a while back.

Again, thanks, all! Cleared up an irksome little mystery for me.

Really appreciated those pictures, SMLE !

* And you could buy them through the mail and at hardware stores and no paperwork. I remember this. I wish all of you could, too.
