I was driving to the blood bank today and on my way I ended up in a side street. It was a bad part of town. As I was driving about 20mph I saw a guy walking in an intercept path with a glock in hand and hidden at his side. He was cocking it. I slumped down in my car and sped up. Luckily he wasn't interested in me and walked across the street. I made the first turn possible to get out of dodge. The blood bank was 1 block away in what was ironically a rather nice building. When I got there I called 911 and told them the rough location of the incident. She was asking me identification questions and all I could say was:

Bluejeans
A cast on one arm (couldn't remember which) but it was beige in color
A black semi-auto handgun (glock)
dark (probably black) shirt
African American
location 1 block northwest of the blood bank (didn't know the name of the street)

At this point I felt bad because I couldn't give specifics other than the make of the gun. I'm curious how people in this forum would have handled it. Would you have gone back and played scout at a distance? My decision to call 911 was easy as he was cocking the pistol. If someone was holding a pistol in hand (no cocking motion witnessed) in an open carry state is there anyone here that would NOT call the police?

I think you did fine. Be careful about asking how you handled a situation on here though. You will get some who will nit pick you to death. Take it from someone who recently dealt with it. Ignore it if you can. I should have ignored more.

You did fine and right. As I have been told many times recently,do not fret.:)

I think you did well. Only thing I might have done differently would have been to slam on my brakes and reverse out of there - but I have no idea if that would have been better than what you did. Otherwise, the same. I definitely would NOT have gone back to spy on things.

Now if you where on a motorcycle ....

Otherwise gun in hand and action cycled while walking across the street should be enough for anyone to duck for cover after throwing the kids in first. You did good and you did much more than the residents of that street ever do collectively .

In public but within personal space I can see someone cycling the action and or handling long enough to holster from or unholster to storage. Press checks are usually something done before you leave your abode or upon return. Depending on holster I may move my carry to or from 4 times a day sometimes.

Now if the gun arm started coming up towards you, I would have gunned it towards him. Hard to outrun a bullet. You'd either run him over, or at least make him forget about firing at you and dive away.

I just got back from walking to and from a 12 step fellowship meeting in my town through some [bad] parts of town. Even armed I hate the bad parts I walk through...

Glad you made it through that situation safely, and nice job!

I don't think you should feel bad at all. You did fine. You gave plenty of good information.

Good job.

Gun in hand, chambering a round, while walking down a city street seems like its MANY, MANY times more likely to be someone with ill intent as opposed to a guy simply carrying his gun and minding his own business.

Or someone lawfully defending against a criminal threat the OP did not see. Either way - somethin's up. Calling 911 with a good description of an individual brandishing a firearm is a good call either way. If the man with the gun was acting lawfully - he should appreciate some assistance. If not...he should explain it to a cop.

Good job OP. You did the exactly right thing and there is no way you could have handled it better. Thank you for informing us of the situation so that we could see the right way to handle a situation like that. Have a great day!

to you flamers: :banghead:

Wacki~ you did fine for yourself. You did what you felt was appropriate. I however would have taken up position behind him and observed from a distance while on with 911.

Where you armed, Wacki?
I would not have left so readily, for I am my brothers keeper.

OK, that should give us a reasonable starting point. All the flaming and responses to flaming are pretty much gone. To be fair, that happened before the thread was moved here.

For anyone tempted to add anything like much of what already appeared here before this revision, forget about it. I'll just have to remove it later too. It's a serious question, and deserves some serious consideration in answering. Anything not up to that standard- well, no need to even type it.

Do the work... and thanks for doing it,

lpl

I would have no problem calling 911 if the situation looked WRONG.

I get uncomfortable if the gun falls out of its holster by accident. But no harm, no foul.

I get uncomfortable watching someone carry a gun into a gun shop, range or pawn shop if the action is not open or cylinder swung out. Again, no harm - no foul.

I get "911" uncomfortable if the gun is purposely removed from it's holster and carried by the grip without an obvious need such as defense, a face to face sale, or carrying it into or out of a gun or pawn shop, etc.

That said, I am perfectly fine with open carry. I am even fine with unholstered carry by hand as long as the person doing the carrying is doing so in a safe manner (such as cylinder open, or slide locked back) in a situation where doing so is understandable.

I have no idea what Mr. Lapin had to edit, and hope my reply passes muster.

I saw him pulling the slide back

Did he do some sort of a cross body arm reach to rack the slide?

How close were you to this guy? Must have been pretty close to be able to tell it was a glock.

You did fine. I think your attention to detail was better than many would have in the same circumstances.

Good to know someone else ignores the "no weapons" rule...you are welcome, they are not. Unless no one knows about them

Great job man! Most other people would probably have had one hand on their firearm and just getting the heck out of dodge. Awesome description given the circumstances!

It is not clear where you live so I am guessing open carry is illegal? If it is not illegal why did you call the police? Was he threatening someone?

Also in your opening paragraph you stated that you saw him cocking the gun and then in the last paragraph you imply that he did not.

I guess what I am asking is what made you call the police?
