Trip to VA Circuit Court

Some history kind of forgotten here. When Virginia's shall issue CCW went into force in the mid-1990s, fingerprinting was mandatory for all of them. VCDL, or at the time NVCDL (it was founded in northern Virginia), fought fingerprinting hard but was only able to get the current "local option" compromise passed. Much later they were able to strip out all fingerprinting for renewal.

Surprisingly, Fairfax County, a pretty liberal place, doesn't require fingerprints.

The first shall issue CCW permits were two years as well...later changed to five.

Yeah I applied in fairfax on 26 jul but am not holding my breath for a quick issuance. They are famous for taking the full 45 days allowed, but can't wait to get it any ways. I was suprised also that fairfax didn't require finger prints.

DrewH....

You didn't happen to graduate from Louisa Co high in '98 did you? I had a friend with your name and last initial that I haven't seen in a long time.

Regarding fingerprinting, you think you could FOIA out the number of times fingerprinting of CCW applicants has solved a crime? I might write up a request and see what happens. Or has it already been done? I'm interested to see the the results...even if I'm pretty sure of the answer already.

Happiness, I too live in Chesapeake, and bought my first pistols in VaBeach w/ the $10 purchase permit. Do you happen to remember if they fingerprinted for it?

I am not sure I understand the question.

There is no "purchase permit" anywhere in VA today (not sure if there ever was).

You can purchase any firearm (other than Class III/NFA items) without any license or permit.
You can open carry w/o any license or permit.

To conceal carry you need a CHP. The fee is no more than $50.
Depending on your city (where you live not where you buy the firearm) you may need fingerprints.

On the southside I know Va Beach & Suffolk do not require a fingerprint card. Chesapeake & Norfolk require a fingerprint card. Chesapeake uses the digital system (not something I like). I am not sure about Hampton, Newport News, or Portsmouth.

I might be wrong but stafford doesn't do finger prints either. You go in there with your app and money and something showing you know how to handle a firearm and your done. For me it is a DD214 the app and money. I have just been lazy and not done it yet.

Yeah Chesapeake($75), Va Beach($10), Norfolk, And Porstmouth(both$15) ALL had Purchase permits for handguns until about 5 years ago. It was one of the "Local Statutes" that were determined to be in Violation of The Va Constitution. Along w/ Chesapeakes "Carrying a Loaded Weapon" law. Trust me on that. I'm still trying to get my record expunged from that one. And so far, the VCDL has been no help either.

I'll give the county clerk a call tomorrow and see what is holding up the process. The only thing I am leary about is becoming "that guy" that complained and got his license denied.:)
