My first choice in CCW, Beretta PX-4 Sub-Compact in 9mm, has finally been released! I ordered one in May 2007 because they were supposed to be out that June.

I was in the market for a new CCW piece at a gun show today (looking primariliy for an HK P2000SK) and stumbled into the PX-4, first one I've seen anywhere.

I'm stoked, but probably won't be able to shoot it until Monday... I don't suppose anyone has any holster recommendations.... :uhoh:

Sorry no pics yet (it's only 2 hours old). Here's a stock photo:

I started reading about them about 2 weeks ago, and I have tried to get a look at one in person, but no place I have gone to has had one. I have my fullsize P90, and I just got a P-3AT, and now I want something middle ground. I figured the Storm would be a nice addition. I would really like to hear how it shoots for you, and maybe you could let me know the price. A PM is fine if you don't want to say the price in the thread.

Okay, I'm jealous! I've been looking around for one but so far I've been unsuccessful . . .

I'll look forward to hearing your report of how well it does!

I rented the full size (in .40s&w) for a test drive a few months ago and liked it alot. Shot well. Kept tight groups. I would've stayed and put a couple more boxes of ammo through it but the arthritis in my wrists was flaring that day and it was getting uncomfortable.

I don't mind giving the price - hopefully it's not bad form.

When I ordered it May '07, it was for $499. Today I gave $579.

Comes with two 13rd mags - one with the flip-down baseplate, one fixed. Night sights. Mag loader.

I have a DeSantis Nemesis I bought for my long-departed Glock 26, and I have both a Small and Medium SmartCarry. So, I'll be able to carry it, but I'd love to get an IWB for it pretty soon. Of course I'll want to put a few hundred through it before I carry it anyway...

I will post pics and a range report soon, I promise!

Still no range report (tomorrow if at all possible!).

I carried it all day today in a SmartCarry (not even loaded - had a pocket gun for real SD). It's a fat little gal, but I think it will work.

One correction - I said it had night sights - nope, I was duped (not by the dealer, he had no idea - I even had to show him how the flip-down mag floorplate worked). I cupped my hand at the gun show - definitely glowing green! Beretta uses SuperLuminova or some such thing, basically glow-in-the-dark after exposure to light. Not quite the same as night sights!! Oh well.

And yes, 13+1...

Storm Pics

I hope to shoot it tomorrow (and I'll post a range report), but I messed around and took some pics tonight. The first one shows the extra backstraps, etc. Note the pic with the "flip-down" mag baseplate. Seemed like a gimmick when I read about it, but it's really quite cool!

I would like to get my hands on one of them, just to see how I like it.

Keep in mind, folks, that there is a big difference between the full-sized Px4 and the smaller versions (beside the sizes I mean). The large one is a rotating barrel design and the smaller ones use the usual tilting barrel lockup.

The trigger pull ought to be the same and I think is the best DA/SA trigger I've found.

Hey Now! I think we have a winner!

Ok, took a three-hour lunch to shoot the Storm. Need to get back to work, so I'll keep it short and sweet. I'm not very good at writing these anyway...

In short, I liked it very much! I can't believe 13+1 shots fit in this tiny thing! No malfunctions of any kind with 200rds WWB. Next trip will be JHPs.

Feel
I have mostly shot "fat" double stack guns, but the gun this one replaced (and I had shot the most recently) was a single stack Sig P239. So, it took me a little bit to get used to the fatter grip. The reach from backstrap to trigger is a bit longer than the Sig, but it felt good to me once I got used to it. It's about 4oz. lighter than the 239, so its felt recoil was more, but still less than I expected. It's partially soaked up, I suppose, but the relatively wider backstrap. Follow-up shots were fast and easy. It came with the medium backstrap - I will probably try out the small and large tonight. The large will just be to try it, I don't think I'll take my CCW piece and see how big I can make it  but the small I might leave on.

Trigger
Both the double-action trigger and single-action were smooth and predictable. I would have to give the nod to the Sig in DA mode just slightly, but the SA reset was short much like the SRT action on the Sig, and I liked both the DA & SA of the Storm very much!

Controls
I like 'em. The fact that when you decock, the decocker stays down as a manual safety will take some getting used to at the range, but won't affect carry. For practice, I often decocked the Sig to practice DA. A couple times today I decocked, and pulled the trigger with safety on - trigger just comes back without resistance. I will carry with safety off, and can't imagine decocking DURING an SD encounter, so forgetting and leaving it on won't happen.

Accuracy
I had like 1-inch groups at 25yds. No, kidding, I just love when people claim that, though. I'm an adequate (not good) shooter, and the accuracy of the Storm greatly surpasses anything I can deliver. I found with deliberate fire I could group it as well as any gun I've ever shot, full size or otherwise. In a more rapid fire mode I confess I was better with the Sig, but I had put several hundred rounds through it, and it was heavier. The Storm is more than capable, I just need to get used to it. Shooting it one-handed (left or right) was very easy and controllable.

Carry
I've carried it in a SmartCarry, and while pretty fat, it is workable (about the same as carrying a Glock 26, except the length is even shorter). It fits in a Nemesis made for a Glock 26 (actually there's 3/4" of material left over at the bottom). It fit in the pants I had on, but like a 26, I would think this would be a VERY limited use manner. I intend to get a custom kydex holster made a la CTAC, and the barrel is so short, I might even look for something appendix style. That's my favorite way to carry when standing, it's just tough to find a gun that will work while sitting!

I can't think what anyone else might like to know - feel free to ask...

Keep in mind, folks, that there is a big difference between the full-sized Px4 and the smaller versions (beside the sizes I mean). The large one is a rotating barrel design and the smaller ones use the usual tilting barrel lockup.
Bart is exactly correct on the design, although I don't know what that difference can be expected to mean. I've heard high praise for the rotating barrel design - bummer they couldn't fit it in the Sub-C - but I don't understand why people praise it (and I would like to!). Is it more reliable? I thought I remember reading that it helps absorb recoil, is that right?

Gotta get back to work... :) Safe shooting to all!

Well thanks, last week I handled one at my local shop and fell in love. Now you post a great range report and I want one even more. The problem is I also want a SR9, a LCP, an SKS. So we will see where this one fall in that list. Although I think I may give up the SR9 for this great gun.

Thanks for the report.

Now you post a great range report
Thanks for the kind words!

I can speak to the LCP. For what it is (and that's a HUGE qualifier), the LCP is simply fantastic! If you are looking for a pocketable option, can't beat the LCP!

Reliability update

UPDATE:

Put 150rds of JHP carry ammo through it over two sessions (Winchester Ranger Bonded 9mm) along with another 50 FMJ without a hiccup of any kind (along with the 200 FMJ earlier). Carrying it every day now... :D:D:D

Very nice. That was one of the guns I considered for a new carry piece. I instead went for my first 1911ish with a para ordnance warthog. Still, nice piece you have there and thanks for the pics and review.

Could you take a picture with another gun (or even just a ruler) for a size comparison?
Sure, but it won't be until later tonight. Until then picture a Glock 26 with 1/2 inch longer grip (to accomodate the 3 extra rounds) and with the top of the slide tapered (rather than square), so it's easier (IMO) to carry.

I currently use a Smith j-frame, a Taurus PT92 (HD only), and a Ruger LCP. I'll try to pair them up with the PX-4 to show the difference.

great posts todd - I can't believe they're actually out, though they still seem to be rare. I was curious about the width. I've been deciding between a PPS and a storm sc - I really like the capacity of the storm, but I really like the width of the PPS - thanks for the info

I really like the capacity of the storm, but I really like the width of the PPS
I'm a big fan of the Beretta but I can't tell you it's even in the same league as the PPS width wise. The Storm SC is the exact same dimensions width-wise as the full size. I think the grip is 1.2in., and the PPS is 1.04in. That might not sound like much, but it's significant.

I put a deposit on a PPS awhile ago - it feels great, and is wicked thin. I read about too many initial problems. That, coupled with the short warranty and lack of holsters kind of made me shy away.

I actually had a Kahr P9 for awhile, which is .90in. - way thinner than even the PPS. I like it, too, but I was biased towards a DA/SA action if I could find one.

I rationalized it that I have a Ruger LCP for super-tiny work, and an M&P340 lightweight j-frame .357 for slightly more firepower. I didn't need another smallish gun - my only other defensive-type firearm is an ENORMOUS Taurus PT92.

So, for me, once I make the commitment to IWB carry for a particular day (the other two guns I pocket carry), I want something that gives me some real benefit - going from 6+1 .380 rounds in a gun 1/2 the size of the PPS to 7+1 of 9mm in the PPS just didn't compute for me, since the LCP is effortless to conceal, and the PPS, though thin, would take some work. I also didn't like the mag release of the PPS, but that's not a big deal, I don't plan for many reloads in a CCW SD situation, plus I'm sure it's something one would get used to.

I can't say I'm a capacity nut, as I did have an 8+1 Sig P239 for awhile - but that's a DA/SA Sig. I have to say, though, I had the Beretta + reload at my disposal pretty easily today, and it was a good feeling!

I'll post some pics when I can - I'd hoped to do it tonight but I can't get it done. Here's a coupls photos from the web that give you an idea, and a video of a dude shooting one at the range:

Here's a great comparison chart of the different sub-compacts available: http://px4sc.com/Comparison.htm (but no PPS)

Note, the pic of the gun in the guy's hand and the comparison chart are from berettaforum.net. They have a sticky of the PX-4 Sub-Compact evaluation, check it out: http://www.berettaforum.net/vb/showthread.php?t=39051

Very interesting comparison to the LCP. I've been wanting to get my hands on one,and they're just too rare right now to find easily. I'm stuck between the XD SC 9mm and the PX4 SC 9mm...it's gonna be a tough decision. In really need to get both of them side by side to do a good comparison of the 2 and see how they fit mine and my wife's hands.

Assume for the sake of discussion they both fit your hands perfectly. Do you have a preference as to striker-fired versus DA/SA? It seems rare that folks are ambivalent regarding the action. I like the feel of the XD very much, but personally prefer DA/SA for CCW, so the choice was easy for me.

Since you may not be able to handle a PX-4 immediately (although I hear they are starting to ship in volume now), maybe thinking about the differences will help you in your deliberation in the mean time... Both are great guns, though - good luck!

BTW, here's a ton of useful PX-4 info: http://berettaforum.net/vb/showthread.php?t=39051

I actually prefer a DA/SA hammer fired gun,but I really like the crisp trigger feel/pull of the XD(need to put my hands on the PX4 to compare). I like the looks of the PX4 better than the XD, but I think my wife would be safer with the "simpler to operate in a bad situation" grip safety on the XD vs. a safety lever on the PX4. Pricing will be really close on the two of them,so that's not really a factor..I really appreciate your descriptive report on the PX4 SC,it's helping to make the decision easier.
