When does awareness become prejudice?

The "gansta" attitude, or as my son calls it, "thug life".
I don't care what color a person is if they are projecting that image. They chose to project that for a reason - they are trying to tell the world something about themselves. Having little else to go on - unless I have had the opportunity to observe their behavior - I have to accept their "statement" at face value.

Well said.

If a person chooses to dress the part of a rebel/outcast/thug/gansta/etc. then its a reasonable assumption that they either ARE one of the above or that they wish to be seen as one. We are not guilty of prejudice when we keep a closer eye on a person who is loudly proclaiming his desire to be believed dangerous through his choice of clothing and personal adornment.

Consider it the rattlesnake's rattle. But remember also that the harmless rat snake will vibrate its tail in dry leaves to imitate the rattle and that the silent copperhead is also poisonous. ;)

We have to remember one thing: clothes, manners, and tattoos anr not racial, cultural, ar any born in attributes. They are behaviors that represent decision, choices. It is alway OK to take a persons behavior into consideration when deciding if they are a threat. There might be a correlation between one behavior and another, such as the choice to wear gang colors and the choice to participate in illegal gang activities, that are closely related in many cases. It is a valid consideration to wonder whether the person wearing a style of clothes also participates in similar activities to others who dress similarly. Same with tatoos. A person covered in tattoos, decided , probably many times, that he wanted to look like that. What is he trying to communicate? Decorations are a form of communication, and should be considered.

No. Sounds like your feeling guilty of being white though, which is just about normal in this day and age...

Personally, I'm fed up with it. Just about as much as I'm fed up with people pretending the FBIs stats don't show certain groups committing crime at a extraordinarily higher rate than others. Instead, we have to listen to blatant liars who tell us we all do these things at the same rate.

Worry about keeping yourself alive first and keeping everyone else happy second.

Well, so far so good, I was really worried that this thread would instantly degrade into , well something not polite.
I posted this last night when I was busy at work and tired from lack of sleep so I didn't word it as well as I should have. If I had it to do over again I probably wouldn't mention race. Race really doesn't enter into it, it's apperance and attitude. To be honest, most of the time my wife and I go out to eat with another couple we go with two black couples. They are professionals, their children are well mannered and behaved. They view the "thug life" in the same life as I do. In Norman Oklahoma you see alot more white kids living this way than black or hispanic or asian. Yeah, I wish I hadn't even mentioned race, but it is interesting that you can't discuss things like this without feeling that you have to explain yourself ad nausium.

Which came first, the kid thinking he was the first person to think of something or the old timer complaining about kids today?

Let's not forget that we have the free will to pick and choose. If you wish to become a member of The Aryan Nations--knowing the risks--then that is your decision to make.

As Christian, I am to love everyone. However, read the fine print. It covers agape' love, the wish that everyone is saved. Heck, there are some elders and deacons in my own church I can't stand. I don't like every biker. And frankly, when I see some of your names I cringe.

The problem with freedom is that sometimes people actually use it. They denigrate your views, they vote for the other party, they don't even like chocolate cake. (In fact, I don't like chocolate cake. Lemon flavored with lots of white icing.)

In a very sense, I don't care if you are prejudiced. I don't have to like you, I'm free.

Agreed. I'm just saying that awareness needs to be color-neutral, because I might just overlook the person who *really* means me harm if I'm too worried about the guy with the tats who doesn't.

Lemon flavored? And I thought you were so cool.:scrutiny:
I grew up in a small town, I was the first boy to graduate there with long hair and probably still the only one to graduate with hair to my butt. In my late teens and 20's I played in punk and metal bands and sported an 8 inch midnight blue mohawk. I was judged on the way I looked. I was also a presidential scholar with a 3.85 GPA. However, I also spent my free time walking around trying to get into fights, so I guess I was probably judged fairly. Maybe I don't have a point here.

Those at the lowest rungs of society tend to only hurt those around them. Those at the upper echelons can hurt far more and get away with it.
Without arguing the merits of your claim, I submit that the hurt you claim they cause isn't the sort which A) results in immediate bodily harm, and thus B) the sort you can defend against by physical force.

"Be polite. Be professional. Have a plan to kill EVERYONE you meet."

You're not being prejudiced as long as you view EVERY UNKNOWN STRANGER as a potential threat until such time as their actions demonstrate that they are not a threat...

Staying on yellow alert due looking for things in our surroundings that indicate dangeris not the same of stereotyping people because they are black with baggy pants, white with tattoos, or Hispanic. Sure sounds to me like you are looking for the wrong indicators of bad intent.

Now tattoos with a known outlaw MC set of colors being worn, and furtive moves, and folowing you - that would be different - that should raise up your alert level for sure. If you do not see the difference, maybe you need some training on what to look for as a potential threat.

All the best,
GB

So am I just playing the odds and being aware of my surroundings, or am I a redneck racist?

I have it from God himself, only Carlos Mencia is permitted to be racist.

Do you care what others think of you?

Punks that dress “gangsta”, or certain gang or criminal related clothes are something I notice immediately but it’s not something that, by itself, worries me too much.
A guy comes walking down the street dressed like that and yes, I’ll keep an eye on him, but it’s not the kind of person that worries me the most.

Personally I’m more wary of people that look simply out of place, generally people that are relatively well dressed, wearing comfortable casual with short hair, either looking as if doing nothing, or 3 or more of them in a parked car, with no clear intention just waiting, or people like that walking a bit too slow, with no bags no suitcase ( where’s that going? Why isn’t he carrying anything? A bag a suitcase, something)
People that look relatively young and fit but with suspicious attitude, and that.. “predatory” look in their faces, eyes checking everything out.

Call me paranoid, but unless it weights less than 20 pounds or is + 100 years old, I consider it a potential threat.
:D

What gets me are those guys who get the horns and teeth implanted, etc., etc...

Sorry, but if one of those guys surprises me in a dark parking lot with a recent viewing of The Exorcist under my belt, all bets are off.

Just imagine the courtroom...

"Your honor, here is a recent picture of the deceased."

"[ ]? Dismissed!"

There's another aspect about this that you might not think about. You could be the one being judged.

Hey, it's a football Sunday! You've been up since 8:00AM stirring up quacamole. By 11:35AM, a few minutes into Madden's pre-game you've already spit up your first beer.

A few hours later you've painted your stomach blue, you just kissed the saloon janitor on the lips and actually cried when the juke box played Toby Keith's "The Angry American."

Seated over in the corner are a handful of bikers, one of them a grizzled old club member who actually uses multisyllable words correctly.

"Townies," he spits, "No matter what color you paint them, they're all as stupid as a box of tire tools."

Trust me, someone, somewhere has said this behind your back.

Oh, more than once they've said it to my face. Half the time they've been right.

The other side of this coin is this. I've also used my appearance to avoid problems. It's difficult for most predators to think of a shaved bald, tattooed fireplug as food.

Am I more likely to get in a fist fight at a jazz concert or a heavy metal concert? Is a teen with pants around his knees and a thug t-shirt more likely to rob me than a 90 year old grandmother?

Suspicious activity take highest priority, regardless of anything else, but I'll devote a little more attention to a scruffy guy with tattoos than I will to a suit.

Who is looking!

Most of us come and go in some kind of vehicle, so walking the streets checking out your fellow walker is not a normal situation.

Walking to your vehicle with your better half (in my case much better) is an area that is of concern, as you look at others, they also look at you! if you look like a victim you are sending out vibes, if you do not look like a victim, you are also projecting an image.

Mugging/attacking individuals by single individuals is a business of sorts, they get cash for it yes? In the case of a handy looking man, not small, or if small, balanced, walks good, head up, relaxed, well lets try someone else is sometimes the thought, not always, but sometimes.

As we travel by car, getting in it is a skill all on it's own, make sure you get to it on your own, look around, observe! electronic key and door opener in hand, one press, no beep, drivers door is unlocked, step in, close door lean on lock button, key in, drive off, always back in, seat belt after leaving parking area.

How many times do you watch people fumble with keys, juggle goods in hand, bend down to find key hole in dark! Victim/Victim.

There are better areas, but no SAFE areas, BGs have transport too.

Not to worried about skin color, my Wife is of Indian decent.

Pre-justice, prejudice . . .

My auto insurance company didn't have any problem charging me higher rates when I was younger. They also didn't have any problem charging me higher rates due to my age. Their statistics clearly showed that young men got into more car accidents than the rest of the population.

Unfortunately, statistics clearly show that African-American males between the ages of 16-24 are more likely to be involved in violent crimes. In fact, they are 9 times more likely to be a homicide victim. The first two to four violent crimes of any evening newscast in my community usually feature minority males in a prominent role. It's not incumbent on me to change my perception. It's incumbent on them to change my perception through better behavior.

The inner city crime problem is something that society does need to address. Hire more police officers. Hire more social workers. Assign them new parents when their birth parents are negligent. Remand the kids to the custody of the Marine Corps when they commit crimes. Move at-risk kids to ranches in rural Idaho. Don't ignore the statistics and pretend that the crime problem doesn't have a center of gravity to attack.

Now, that being said, the white community has a few things to address as well. Don't get me started on rich white folks who give their kids Mustangs, BMWs, or Camaros... :cuss:

I grew up in Gastonia NC

For those who do not know Gastonia NC, to give you a idea of the crime rate, this works...

Gastonia, North Carolina is 0.3 out of a possible 5 total points. Higher ratings indicate that your area is safer.

which sums this up nicely. You DO build a awareness of whats bad and what is not so bad.

the three things that you need to look at when citing risks.

1. Gut feeling
2. How they are acting
3. How they are dressed

This will give you a good idea of going from yellow alert to red alert. That and I learned a lot of ways to avoid conflict.
