I'm looking at buying my first Glock and am not sure if I should get a 17 or a 34 (yes, I want a 9mm). This is for general purpose use, mostly at the range; NOT for concealed carry. I already have CZ SP-01 and Beretta 92FS, so I'm used to some pretty nice shooting 9mm pistols.

I would opt for the 34 over the 17. I have owned both, and both are great guns, but for target use, the extra length of the 34 is very nice. Plus for defensive purposes, putting +P in there will begin to approach the 357 SIG power level out of that long barrel. Like the 17 a lot, but love the 34.

DO the G34 and G17 have the same frame? Also, how would you compare the size of the frame to G22?

Both? :D

I personally prefer the G34, the longer sight radius helps with long distance shots. The longer length is a little more front heavy, but it very slightly softens the muzzle rise. The advantage is adding a tungsten FLGR on the G34, that made a nice difference.

I like the G17 also though, it is a great gun that I'd have no qualms of beating around, since I know it can take it. But just plinking around at the range, I favor the G34.

The G34 and G17 share the same frame. It also has the same size frame as the G22.

I also have both, a 1st gen G17 and a recently acquired G34. This is a hard call, I like them both. I have to agree with the previous comment on the improved sight radius on the G34.

Either way, they are both great choices.

For me the G34 for shooting more than 25 yards and the G17 for 25 and less. Longer sight radius of the G34 helps with accuracy but the G17 is fast and accurate for close work. I own several G19, G17 and G34. It is a tough call between the G34 and the G17. Try both before you buy.

For the range and nothing else, the G34. For me, the G34 was a great range and IDPA gun, but the G17 makes a great range, IDPA, CCW, car/truck, woods, SHTF, everything else gun.

Granted, the size difference is not that great, I just prefer the slightly shorter, slightly quicker from the holster G17.

I decided on a Model 34, a Model 19 and two Model 26 pistols.
As stated, get the 34 for the upgrades, you can always find a Model 17 upper if you want both.
The 17 and the 34 use the same receiver and either upper can be used on either lower.

Yes they are on the market.
If the big retailers, Top Glock, Glockmeister, etc. don't have them then they can be found at bigger gunshops.
Quite a few Three gun and IDPA shooters have their guns made up with tricky stainless steel slides and barrels for shooting lead bullet ammo and looking tricky different and they sell off the original uppers to cover the cost.

In my hands the 34 isn't noticably front heavy because the side is lightened with an oval cutout on the top, the sight radius is just longer, the muzzle flip a little less, and the muzzle blast is much less noticable.

Ditto on the G35 with the 9mm conversion barrel. I've got a Bar Sto barrel for mine and its very accurate. Added benefit you can shoot lead out of the cut conversion barrel.

I have a glock 17. Here's why I chose it over the glock 34. The g34 has a 3.5 connector a extended mag release and a extended slide release, the g 17 doesn't. Both glocks have the glock sights which I don't care for even though the 34 has a plastic adjustable rear. The g34 costs about $100 more. I bought a 3.5 connector and an extended mag release for my g17, I didn't get the extended slide release(didn't want one). That cost about $20. I then bought sevigny competion sights for my g17. The front sight is a thin fiber optic blade that allows for precision shooting, more so than the fat plastic stock glock sight. So for about the same price as a g34 my g17 has a similar trigger and mag release but has sights that are a huge improvement over the g34 sights.

Excellent Railroader; thank you! Just the information I was looking for.

Not sure about that.

The distances of the front and rear sights of a longslide are very easy on the eyes, especially with those whose eyes are bad. Recoil is very nill, because of the weight of the slide and length of the barrel.

I'd say it's the Rolls Royce of the Glock line, because of price. And the trigger is really nice...like smooth butter.

It's more meant for competition and practical service use. I've used it with a concealed outside the waistband holster and hides very well.

I had a 34 and have shot a 17. Based on my shooting the 17, I assumed I'd like a 34. I was wrong.

I didn't like the extended magazine release; it was always in the way. Somehow, I didn't shoot any better with the longer sight radius either.

So for me, it would either be 17 or 19. Since 19 wasn't an option for you, I'd vote 17. The 17 is the one that has been through all that crazy testing and is the most reliable pistol in the world.

I have the 17 L 1988 model gone through and updated and then I bought a std 17 slide and had it gone through also...They shoot really well...

Don't have a 34 but I have a 22 and a 21 and the 17L and std. I have the after market barrels to go along with the originals all of after market have lands and groves and some are std and 6.5" length...

;)
