I've been considering a full length guide rod for my 1911, and as far as I can find out, they don't really have much use, except for looks. So, what do you think of them from an aesthetic standpoint?

Also, do you generally prefer the appearence of 1911s when they're in their standard GI configeration, or tricked up? Please disregard utility for the purpose of this question.

I'm an old fuddy duddy. I prefer the 1911 in its original configuration.
However, with age comes compromise. I can't see the doggone GI sights, so I must put better sights on my guns; however, I still prefer the look of the design as adopted in 1911.

FLGR have their place this has been duked out in feirce discussion use the search option.

I don't look at the front of the gun, often. My Pro Carry has to have the FLGR with the bull barrel, but I replaced it in my 5" Eclipse with a GI GR. I love not needing tools of any kind for dismantling them. I still have to us a paper clip for the Pro.

As for the other stuff, I like a beavertail, good nightsights, textured MSH and front strap. A crisp breaking 3.5 to 4.5lb trigger is nice as well.

I don't like any serious gun "tricked up". That's for competition or for pimps.

I do like M1911s and my serious business/duty pistols will be modified from original 1911A1 with items such as improved sights, relieved ejection ports, beavertail, fitted bushing, extended slide release, ext. mag release, ext. thumb safety, 4.25lb fitted trigger/sear etc.
-After spending this knid of money, I may as well spend some more on better grips.

FLGRs don't contribute to the reliable operation of a M1911, AND they can actually keep you from successful operation in the field (find a paperclip during a firefight) so they don't go into a 'business' gun.

If it comes with a solid 1-pc FLGR, I leave it in the gun. If it comes with a short GI rod and plug, I leave it in the gun.

If it comes with a 2-pc FLGR, I swap for a short GI rod and plug. If it comes with a shock buff on the guide rod, that gets tossed in the trash.

I have a couple that have them, and they work fine, but I would not bother to add one to a 1911. If you do, make it a one piece, the two piece ones are always getting loose.

All of my Kimbers came with one, but I wouldn't add one to those that did not. They really aren't necessary, and generally require some sort of wrench to easily field strip.

The usefulness of a FLRG is in doubt on a carry gun.

I like them like 1911A1. Colt Government Model is a good example. A 70 series reproduction is even better since it has better sights.

BUT TO EACH HIS OWN!

My Springfield Armory V-16 Long Slide has a FLGR as far as I know, and I hate not being able to strip it down with no tools like my 1911-A1. I'd prefer it had the standard GI rod/plug. But since it came that way and it shoots accurate and reliable, I don't wanna mess with it.

Ive got them with and without.... With that being said it's a 1911. Either way you're a winner :D I don't mind the looks either way.

I like tricked out. Has to have a great trigger! the rest is up to buget.

Now, It is your gun, Doesn't matter what any one else likes. your gun, your money. What do you like, and go for it.

If you can't decide. Keep one plain, and trick another out.

Have fun, be safe.

i am more for function over form, they look good but they serve me no purpose, so there fore i will and do stick with the gi version.

One of the best and fastest way to separate you and $25. Other than that they are eye wash. If the gun comes with them fine, but otherwise the money would be better spent on ammo.
