I'm glad there are still places like Big 5 willing to deal with firearms. Local wallymarts only sell ammo here. Anyone remember when Sears & other department stores like them sold firearms? Boy how times have changed.

One of the best deals I ever got was a Remington 870 at JC Penneys back in the early to mid 80's when they stopped selling guns. They had marked them down about 20% for clearance, I had a special coupon as a JCP credit card holder for 20% off any puchase of $100 or more, and at the time Remington had a $50 rebate going. Ended up being half the going rate at the time.

I look everytime I go into Big 5, have been tempted a time or two. They are one of my "go to" places though for shoes. Can always get good shoe deals.

They are called Hex receivers because that's what collectors have been calling them for ages. Probably long before someone pointed out that they are not hexagonal but octagonal. If you remove the stock, you'll see that they're not even octagonal. The underside is round.

I live in a place that is very unfriendly to the shooting sports. I feel a duty to support any chain store that still sells firearms or ammo. I try to look first at Bug 5 for any sporting goods I need. I recently bought swim goggles and some anti fog spray at Big 5. I use my dollars to support those who support the shooting sports. Sports Authority does not sell guns or ammo in CA. Walmart sells ammo in only a few stores in this area.

Add me to the list of Marlin 1894C buyers at Big 5. No checkering, 'hardwood' stock.

I'll second what others have said. The normal prices are way out there but the once or twice a week sales often have good prices. You have to keep looking. And online too. Good store for sneakers.

Just bought my first Mosin. M44 Carbine for $99.

M1 Carbine for $899 'on sale' this week - not very good quality.

It is good to have a chain store still selling firearms. Might not last forever if they keep making more gun laws.

Dunham's Sporting Goods here in the "Midwest" (OH, IL, IN, etc) seem to be the same as the "Big 5" chain on the west coast. If you pasted "Big 5" over the "Dunham's" name on the sales fliers, you couldn't tell the difference.

Bought my 1954 Romanian M-44 for $50 in 2004 from my local Dunham's. Yeah, their normal prices are goofy high, but watch the sales fliers for the best deals.

Big Five sells a lot of cheap crud but they do carry a bunch of good shoes, fishing stuff, and guns. As many others have said, it is highly priced, but they have large sales every week and you can almost always find mosins, marlins, and remington/mossberg shotties on sale, at least in So Cal. They are one of the only chains in Cali to sell guns. Them, and Bass pro shop still do it.

I got fleeced again there today. $69 for a 1943 Ishevsk M91/30 is just too much I tell ya!

I've bought a few milsurp rifles at Big 5. Very true about high prices but good sales. I don't think I've ever bought anything there at the regular price, but I've bought several $50 Turkish Mausers and Moisin-Nagants. Sure wish I had bought more. One time they had a Christmas sale and I bought 2 Turk Mausers for $45 each.:)

The ones in my neck of the woods never seem to have Mausers anymore :(

I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

Well I went in yesterday to pick up a MN. I found one that I liked with matching numbers and a solid stock so I began to fill out the papers. Having my old address on my DL I retrieved my vehicle registration from my glove box which had my current mailing address on it. PO box.
The manager told me that he couldn't accept that since it didn't show my physical address. Me, being a big mouth, said, "well it worked before when I bought a shot gun here." (true story)

He got this surprised look on his face and asked when that was. I told him I bought it earlier this year. He said he'd "have to look into that record" and that he or the FBI might be contacting me for proof of address. :scrutiny:

I cursed myself for mentioning the shotgun the second the words left my lips.

At any rate, I drove to the local licensing office and got an official change of address printed on the same green State of WA paper as my vehicle reg. and stapled it to the reg. I hope that's good enough.

Everyone goes to big 5 for Mosins

I bought my M91/30 from Big 5 for $90. Good condition too.

The price may have been good, but their attitude was so-so, guy behind the counter looked like he was about to die even thinking about selling a high powered rifle to us. Big ordeal to say the least. (Their cheapest 7.62x54R is $26 for 20! :what: ) Good thing I found the surplus store down the road.

Went to the local guys (Baron's Den) and was out the door in 15 minutes (counting the browsing time) with a 1911A1. No waiting period :neener:

Had to stop going there when the manager spoke to by first name to show me something that had not hit the shelf yet lol First rule for B5 is only by sale stuff and check around before you buy. They are always high on the 10/22 for some reason, SKS and M1 carbine are astronomical even on sale prices. My favorite B5 gun is a toss up between the Marlin 1894 in 357 and the Taurus m63 22
