I'd grab it at 200 bucks. If you (or your hubby) decide you don't like it, you can make your money back pretty much instantly. Shoot, if nothing else, consider it a long term rental.

These rifles have been in use since the sunset of WWII when their first prototypes were being used against the Germans.

Here are some plusses and minuses:

Plusses:
  • Rugged
  • Reliable
  • Low maintenance
  • Accurate enough. MOA will be difficult to get for this rifle, but for East Coast deer ranges, it will work fine
  • Inexpensive ammo, while no longer Sub .22 cheap, are STILL a bargain to be had.
  • Inexpensive. Where else can you find a semi-auto rifle that doesn't cost a fortune?

Minuses:
  • Short stock (for me. Of course, I am 6'1")
  • Sights are crude
  • "The evil Assault Weapon" vibe

In short, it's a "good enough" rifle for deer. If you like it, it will last for a long time. If you don't, well then at least you tried it and can use it as trade bait for something you want, or can sell it outright to get your money back. I don't see a downside to you getting it either way.

Jeanie: I hope this is not repetition.

Not only is an SKS rugged and dependable (mine is a Norinco), the ammo can still be delivered to your home at $.20/round, including shipping.

Some Yugos reportedly suffered from old corrosive ammo which damaged the gas tube/piston.
This is seldom mentioned about Yugos from other countries.
You can probably get your money back in the near future or possibly profit if you decide that the gun is not wanted and is in good condition.

My un-fired Norinco was a very good deal $200 last March because the seller wanted to get rid of his. They are listed much higher than that at any retail gun stores I've visited or the local gun show, and these other guns are in much worse condition, usually banged around. Mine was/is perfect. Two pawn shops here listed really good Yugos or Norincos for about $270 this summer. Prices have gone up in the last few months.
If you like the appearance of the gun (and its bore) in question, with no internal corrosion etc, then the price appears very reasonable. Will he let you shoot it nearby if you bring somebody along (as a female) and furnish the ammo?

And if you get your ammo at about $.20/round and try to sell it for that, you will have no problem. There are not only huge numbers of the SKS around, but also AKs and some Saigas for that caliber.

jeannie29,
a .308 is an excellent deer rifle but not much different from the .270 you already have, if he just wants a new gun it would be fine but if your looking for something for you to shoot? have you fired the .270? was it ok? the sks may be ok but you can get better "deer" rifles for not much more $$ see Mossberg & Stevens.
if you have fired the .270 and didn't like it, look at .260 or 7mm-08 or .243
good luck.
