I have been shooting a little over two and half years now, and have finally become comfortable and proficient enough with a handgun that I no longer feel cc would do me more harm than good (aka get me out of a sticky situation rather than put me in one).

So its time for me to pick out what my conceal carry handgun will be.

I already have two guns which would be ideal for cc (an xd-40 and an m&p 40), however after spending some time testing guns at my local range yesterday (beretta 90two, cz 75b, sig 226 and 239) I have decided that it will be a Sig of some sorts.

My reasoning is simple: 1) the Sig just fits me- I picked up the gun (239 or 226 take your pick) and immediately shot better than I have with either my xd or my m&p, or my 1911 for that matter, and 2) I like being able to carry with one in the chamber while still keeping the hammer down in da with the heavy trigger pull (I know I'm going to get a bunch of gruff for this, its just as safe with the xd cocked n locked etc etc but I am just more comfortable carrying this way rather than hot on the xd/m&p, so just bear with me).

I liked the cz, but the muzzle flip seemed less on the sigs for me, and I like the straight 8 sights on the sigs as well.

So basically, I have decided that Sigs might just be the guns for me, even though they are more $$$ than I would like to spend. I have even considered trading in one of my other guns to make the Sig more affordable, which is hard for me to do as I kind of like collecting stuff, but that is how sure I am of my affinity for the Sigs.

So basically it boils down to a battle of Sigs for cc. What advice can you experts offer me between the p226, p229, and p239? I hear nothing but good things about all of them. I know the p239 is the smallest of the bunch and therefore easiest/most comfortable for cc, but I hear a lot of ppl say the p229 is there cc weapon of choice. Is this usually b/c of the increased capacity, or is there other reasoning involved?

How should I go about deciding which one is best for me? I shoot both the 226 and the 239 equally well, and assume the p229 will be the same.

I know the 239 has a lower capacity, but that is not a major concern to me.

I guess what I am asking is how much of a difference would I notice in comfort and concealability of the p239 vs the other two options/why would I go with the p226 or p229 over the smaller and seemingly easier to carry p239.

How did you decide on your first cc weapon?

I am 6'1" 160 lbs (aka bony) and will be carrying iwb. Any help is appreciated.

or, should I look at the p5/p225 milsurp guns. I hear they are very good guns as well. However I also hear that backup magazines can be ridiculously expensive for them....

Seconded. If you want a Sig (who could blame you?) then your best bet without breaking the bank is a P6; they can be had for ~$300, depending and are usually in excellent mechanical condition, though there could be some holster wear. And they shoot and feel just like the Sigs that cost twice as much or more. It's exactly like a P225, save for the odd hammer and a few springs.

It's a single-stack 9mm, with 8 round capacity, not huge, but you already said that's not a big concern for you.

Or, you could go for a Sig factory refurbish. They are also in excellent shape and can be had for a couple of hundred dollars less than brand-new. (Around $500)

One last thing about the P6-The DA trigger pull is quite long and heavy, as they were made for German LE use. You can either live with the heavy pull, or get it fixed relatively easily and cheaply

I have a P6 that is a German police surplus gun and I love it. The finish is worn but the mechanicals are rock solid and it was cheap. The gun came with a case, 2 mags and a cheap aftermarket trigger lock adn I bought two extra mags and a holster to go with it and still spent well under $400. The gun shoots well, is reliable and is a good size for carry. Personally, I've never found the trigger to be heavy, a little longer pull maybe but no heavier than my S&W 3913. I would say you really can't go wrong with one of these. Not to mention that they are showing up everywhere these days with some great prices on them.

Sig P239

I own the three Sigs you are considering - P226, P229 and P239. They are all good guns but I feel the P226 is just too large for concealed carry, and I use mine for a range gun or home defense. The P229 can be carried and I have a holster for mine, but it is pretty wide and fairly heavy, about 32 ounces empty. So I have only carried it in the winter time wearing heavy clothing, when it is easy to conceal.

My favorite for year around carry is the single stack P239 in 9mm. It is thinner than the others and the grip is smaller, making it far easier to conceal. The gun is accurate and reliable, and I feel comfortable with the 8 + 1 capacity and a spare magazine in my pocket. I use the Federal 147 grain HST ammo in the gun based on gelatin tests I have seen, showing 13.5 inches of penetration and 0.77 inch expanded bullet diameter. Here is the gun and my Desantis OWB holster for it:

Man, you can't go wrong here. You've actually narrowed the field down to where you can't really make a bad choice.

I'm not a 239 fan, just because the grip seems stubby, and the balance is off for me. However, it shoots great. If it feels ok to you, no problems with this pick.

I love the P6 that I just got. It is a much lighter gun than the 239, therefore it has a bit more felt recoil, but not bad at all. Awfully accurate. Spare mags are somewhat high, but that's one of the drawbacks of Sig no matter which one you choose.

However, the 229 in 9mm is my baby. I shot both P6 and 229 side by side this weekend, and the 229 is a tack driver. It's quite a bit heavier than the P6, but holds a bit more ammo in the mag.

Winter carry this year is going to be the P6 and 229.

Don't rule out the P6 as a viable and less expensive option. Also, don't rule out a CPO 228 if you can find one. It is almost identical to the 229 but only comes in 9mm. The 228 is hands down the favorite handgun I own.

You will probably not be happy carrying the 226 in a concealed fashion. It can be done and I do it occasionally, but it isn't really the best option. The 239 is a great concealed gun. I carried one for about a year until I found something lighter that I shot better.

Weight of P239 vs. P225 (P6)

I would disagree with this. According to the Genitron Handgun Database, the Sig P239 in 9mm weighs 27.5 ounces empty, while the Sig P225 (P6) weighs 28.9 ounces empty. Both guns have aluminum frames and 8 round magazines, but the P239 is a trimmer and more streamlined gun, which saves about 1.5 ounces in weight.

I carried the 229 for several years as an issued plainclothes gun. I didn't have to worry about printing and used an owb holster. So the gun was a good choice. But I gotta tell you for civilian CCW, if cost is of no consequence, my pick would be the 239. It is just about ideal for ccw, adequate caliber at the right size.

If cost is an issue, then I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to go with the P6.

The 239 is a very comfortable carry gun. I recently went with the 1911 platform for thinness, but my Sig 239 carried better then my lighter G23 due to the grip angle. The 239 is nose heavy, but still points well, and best of all hides well.:)

Well, have you ever gone into your local gunstore not looking to buy, but leaving with something nonetheless?? Thats what happened to me. I went in to check out some of the cz ramis, but when I got there, they had a like new p239, with the shortened trigger and I'd guess less than 200 rounds through it. The second magazine hadn't even been removed from the plastic!

Perfect condition all around. I added some hogues to it and got otd for less than $540.

Any recommendations on iwb holsters??
