Can anyone suggest a lower to moderately priced lower varible powered scope that will stand up to the recoil of a 45-70. I am concerned with the scope keeping its zero. This will be used during primitive weapon deer season in Mississippi. Could you also suggest the heigth of rings to use considering the style of the Handirifle scope mount rail. My eye sight is not as good as it used to be to use the fixed sights supplied on the 45-70 handirifle.

I agree, if you can find a Weaver K2 1/2 or K3 fixed-power, it would make a perfect scope for you if you don't want a variable.

Look into the legality of a Handi-rifle for a primitive weapon deer season first. A Handi-rifle isn't a primitive firearm just because of the calibre.

MIssissippi Law reads as follows regarding Primitive Weapons for deer.

Laws vary from state to state as we all know.

However...........

Mississippi Public Notice LE4-2280 is amended and the following rules and regulations are adopted.

"Primitive firearms" for the purpose of hunting deer, are difined as single or double barreled muzzle-loading rifles of at least .38 caliber: single shot, breech loading, cartridge rifles (.35 caliber of larger) and replicas, reproductrions or reintroductions of those type rifles: and single or double-barreled muzzle-loading shotguns with single ball or slug. All muzzle-loading Primitive Firearms must use black powder or a black powder substitute with either percussion caps or #209 shotgun primers or flintlock ignition. Breech loading single shot rifles must have exposed hammers and use metallic cartridges.

I checked on that before I answered the first post.

Apparently, in Mississippi, even a .458 WinMag Ruger #1 single-shot with a 20x Target scope is a "primitive weapon"! :what:

"single shot, breech loading, cartridge rifles (.35 caliber or larger) and replicas,"

According to the way the law reads, I would have to agree, that in my opinion, that is correct.

Let me add another qualificatrion the Ruger Question.

There must also be an exposed hammer. I don't believe the Ruger has one.

Yea, too bad! That would have been a heck of a gun! Might even work for larger than whitetail. But I don't think my shoulder would be up to it!

any moderately priced low power variable should do nicely for your handi rifle. In 35+ years I've had 2 scope failures oddly enough both were T/C contender related.

Take a look at the Weaver Classic V-3 1-3x20. So far it is holding up great on my Marlin 1895, and I shoot loads ranging from super mild plinkers to stuff appropriate for mid-sized brontosaurus.

I have not yet had a chance to test it in low light, but otherwise have been very pleased. FWIW, I actually chose this scope over a similarly capable Leupold after reading the excellent reviews at midwayusa.com

I'm a big fan of low power fixed or variable for the 45/70. As others mentioned, the Weaver Classic line fits the moderate price profile as well. I started with a fixed modern K2.5, cycled that over to my 1894 in 44 mag where it's still doing fine and have a V-3 on the 1895G. Both have been solid scopes for me. 20mm objective lets you set 'em right down on the bore line with low rings.
