Howdy, folks.

What's the legal procedures to get rid of a gun that's no longer safe to shoot? Would turning it in to a local PD suffice or is more required?

Do you live in a state that registers guns? If not, do whatever you want with it. There are no legal procedures if the gun isn't registered.

CT has a law stating that you must report any gun lost or stolen from you. If this is the case in your state I would turn it in to the PD or a gun buy back. Sometime down the road the govt may pull the 4473's from all area gunshops looking for anyone who owns a particular type of gun and if your name comes up and you tell them "It broke so i cut it up in pieces and threw it in the trash" it may end up with you being arrested and forever losing all your gun rights.

If it is a nice looking gun then maybe you could make a wall hanger out of it. Not to sound cruel or anything but if somebody breaks into your house they will probably steal the first gun they see. If they steal an unsafe to fire gun and blow off some of their body parts maybe it will convince them to pursue a new way of life.

Ummm... that's a bit out there. Pretty unlikely.

dont do anything wait untill the local government has one of those turn in your gun thing. where they give you gift cards and stuff.. i have an old marlin thats has seen its best days a long time ago. totally beat. its been fixed and refixed to many times. so i know around november december local pd always has a gun buy back or turn in. So thats when i get rid of my junk gun get some gift certificates and either buy more ammo or gun stuff

hahhahahaa

they never learn

Stick it in the back of a closet. They'll come a day when you feel like tinkering around on it.

Yeah, and the next kid with a snorkel and swim fins is going to recover it and figure out how to make it shoot.

When I was in high-school, circa 16 yrs old, I made lots of $$$ recovering stuff out of recreational lakes with no more than a mask, fins, and a snorkel.

-- Oh yeah, and a float tube, diver's knife.

If someone ever comes to my house asking where a gun on a 4473 is, I will have sold it private sale. To whom, I don't know his name because I'm not required to know it.

donate to gunsmith school

Many gunsmith schools would like a junk gun to practice on.
Polishing, blueing, engraving, checkering, etc.

That's exactly what happened during the DC sniper shootings. Not far out there at all.

Some gunsmiths like having old guns to use for parts. So you might ask your locals if they want it.

As someone else said... it's recycling.

Just happened in OK too.

What! You really think you need a cop's permission to dispose of a firearm?

What's wrong with you?

Oklahoma police investigating the shooting deaths of two girls have told area residents with guns to bring them in for a test to determine whether they were used in the attack, sparking concern among those who own guns for hunting and self-defense.

According to reports in the Tulsa World the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation sent letters to members of the community who were registered as owning .40-caliber handguns suggesting they voluntarily bring in their gun or guns for a test.

The individuals who were "invited" to bring their guns in but didn't now will be included in the ongoing
investigation

Yup that's pretty far out there aint it?

You might find someone who does hunter safety courses.
A long time ago I was taught hunter safety with a "junk" Winchester 94.

This is about as stupid as having tire tracks from the scene of a hit & run victim and all the folks who bought those tires being 'invited' to bring their cars in for testing.

What happened to actual "detective work"?

Interesting way of violating the 4th amendment
