I actually bought my first 22 rifle there at Hyatt's many moons ago with money I made cutting grass.

Bass Pro Shops is right off the Interstate in Concord, as well. Lots of guns. But, it's like a bar during happy hour. Elbow your way to the front and place your order.

Gunslingers in Kingsport TN gets another vote from me. Very nice people behind the counter and a nice selection of stuff, considering the size.
If you want to make a stop in Bristol (exit 5 in VA), Buck and Bass outfitters just moved over beside the Harley shop. They have a lot of nice older and collectible weapons ( I just spotted a Remington Rand 1911 yesterday).

Hyatts, oh lord, that is a great place for the selection and all the guns to look at and fondel but that is it, it is well known around my parts back home as "high dollar hyatts". everytime that i am on leave i do go in there though to look.

I've found Hyatt to be consistently LESS expensive than the only other major gun shop in Charlotte---Carolina Sporting Arms.

Hyatt sells a LOT more firearms than CSA.

Don't be fooled by Hyatt's high sticker prices. They put the MSRP on the stickers, but they almost always come down a good bit when you ask them what's the lowest they can go.

Auburn,

What was your experience at Carter's? If you want to use a PM, I would be interested.

As an aside, I live less than 5 minutes from where Darr's was. PM me, if you are still nearby we can maybe hit a range together sometime.

I haven't bought anything from Carter's, but I did shoot there one time. I don't see myself returning to that indoor range until they get some ventilation besides "Prop that door open."

I'm just not a big fan of those lead boogers.

You have Legends in Athens TN (approx 3 miles from Exit 49 I-75) for new guns. Every now and them, something interesting is sold there. I believe they are having financial problems as they have downsized to less than half the store size they were.

Carters (approx 6 miles north on HW58 relative to Hwy 153/58 exit) is okay. I don't care much for their range due to lighting and ventilation.

Ammo Dump is (approx 1 mile north of Hwy 58/153 interchange on Hwy 58). It is small with small inventory. The good stuff gets bought quick by the clingons. It is a major good ole boy spot and they don't make non clingons welcome. Drive on by.

I like Benton Shooters Suppy in Benton TN. It is way off the beaten track for travelers on I-75. Not many military guns.

OK, the lighting and ventilation do suck, I was just curious about why the other poster wasn't going back. I happen to like Carter a lot. I consider him one of the better personalities in a gun store in the reason. They even engage in politics, and have are OK at knowing what goes on. Pretty helpful people too, the customer service is IMO the best in this area at any gun shop I have been to.

Regarding the Ammo Dump, I have to agree with 22rim 100%. The first time I entered there I was treated like something that needed scraped off the bottom of a shoe. I went a second time because he was selling the tickets to the Friends of the NRA convention, and I wanted to go. I figured, he might be more tolerable after some chat and a purchase. Nope, still a jerk.

Also, Auburn in post #22 mentions a place near NorthGate mall. just drive right on by them too. Sportsmans Warehouse is that place, and you get the same treatment Hal Shaw (guy who runs the Ammo Dump) gives. The last time I went there to buy supplies I found what I needed (not exactly easy, he had a crappy layout at the time) and went to the register. And waited. Customer, waiting to buy, and he ignores me. As I was about to leave he finally finds it in his busy schedule to ring me up. He charges an extra 3% for CC. His prices sucked already, and in hindsight, I wish I had told a CC company so he would not be able to take plastic. I just cannot stand terrible CS like that guy offers.

In regards to the comment about Sportsman's Warehouse, I think you meant Sportsmans Supply.

Sportsman's Warehouse is the chain store, Supply is the local-ran store. I had thought about going there to test out a pistol or two, but if the attitude in there sucks I'll steer clear.

There is a shop called Shulers in Commerce Georgia just off I-85 that has a gun department

AR15thur,

I think you are right. I seldom drive by that place, and must probably have the name wrong. Sportsmans Supply sounds right, and Warehouse is the big chain. My bad.

Auburn, care to share with us what was so bad about your experience?

In Atlanta try Bernies Army Navy

Bernie's Sports Center
345 Killian Hill Rd.
Lilburn, GA 30047
Phone (770) 381 - 9897

Bernies has no FFL and doesn't sell guns. Nice people though and they do still sell accessories.

Ammo Dump in Chattanooga is definitely *not* worth a visit...no inventory.

Carters is not really worth a visit - no milsurp and not a lot of inventory.

Coal Creek is a great store in Knoxville...

Frontier Firearms (about 20 miles west of Coal Creek) is also a good little store...good inventory.

Benton Shooters, Mahoney's, Gunslingers - all good to visit.

Traders Gun Shop (near Greenville, SC) is a good one if you're going up 85.

Blue Ridge Shooting Sports is another good one in Greenville, SC.

Definitely hit Hyatt's in Charlotte.

That should keep you busy on your trip... ;)

500, when was the last time you visited?

Carter's has an inventory. The store itself is large, and they don't make up much total space, but he has one of the better inventories around here.

Can't argue about you with the Ammo Dump though.
