So we were out doing a couple of very last minute errands tonight, prior to tomorrow's apocalypse, aka Ike, coming ashore. We had 740 AM on (talk radio) and the host was interviewing various people who were either bugging out or staying put. Suddenly they're interviewing Rep. John Culbertson, who was encouraging those of us who are watching this 500-mile freight train bearing down on us from here. He cheerily said, "Well, you know, all you really need is enough food and drink and ammo, as we say here in Texas, and you're good".

Food, drink, and ammo. God bless Texas. And even some of our politicians :)

Looks like it is going East of us so we will be ok. The grandkids and youngest daughter live in Rock Port but they are here in town so I know they will be safe.
All the rest of the family has been told they are welcome and that we are well stocked with food guns and ammo as well as a monster generator and plenty of fuel to run electricty and water from the well so we will still have all the comforts but I don't think it will be needed. Even so it is always good to be prepared.

I pity the looter that thinks to come into our neighborhood. Our little corner of the neighborhood alone has four gunnies; and none of us are of a mind to put up with people who think they can come feast off other's misery.

Myself, I marked the occasion by picking up a new little Beretta Bobcat from my local FFL. Don't think I'll get to get out and shoot it for a few days, but it is one SLICK little gun for a BUG. I swear, it looks like my Bersa .380's little brother... it's uncanny.

Y'all be safe and keep your gun near. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Texas thats going to be hit by Ike. Some one painted a sign on thier boarded up windows. It says Take a hike Ike.

Oh, the guns are well set. All the mags are topped off, everything's in good working order. Unfortunately, nobody's come up with a one-shot stop caliber for a Category 2 hurricane....

Hey, there's a whole 'nuther thread. "What caliber for Ike?" :neener:

Springmom, probably doing a bit of whistling in the graveyard :p

"I Like Ike"

I scratched this message into many sidewalk concretes in the 50s. Naming a violent hurricane "Ike" is not my idea of proper nomenclature. IKE, the hurricane, shall be violent, but will ultimately "water" interior Texas. If Galvaston becomes the primary target of destructition, I hope all becomes well due to plenty of warning from my weather channel to prepare. Cliffy

When my husband dropped a note to his sibs last night, he commented "you know it's going to be a bad weekend when Jim Cantore comes to visit." Pretty much true.

I hadn't even thought of the connection to President Eisenhower. He was president when I was born, and I remember his face on the black and white TV. You're right....a totally inappropriate name for a killer storm.

I got the wife and kiddos where they need to be. I am just a hair North of Beaumont.

They gave me a shiny hologram to put on my license to allow me past the roadblocks.

They evacuated us for Gustav.(I stayed) Even made it mandatory. It rained for 15 min. I think this is gonna be one wild ride.

I am concerned that they evacuated a lot of people from a "less desirable" city with a high crime rate through our area. It just showed on the news that a lot of people from this area hit the traffic in my town and said they were going to ride it out here in their car.

My property line is exactly 32 yards from Hwy 96, a major evac route for this area. Including Beaumont, Port Arthur, Orange, and all the smaller towns. For THR members in this area that haven't bugged out, traffic is moving freely as of 5 minutes ago. I hope the only incident I will endure is the hurricane itself.

Springmom: good luck, keep your powder dry, and I wish you and yours the best.

I'm sure the National Hurricane Center was thinking about that when they were selecting the names.
These people are in their 40's and 30's and don't make any name connections.Could have named it Adlai, for pete's sake.
They are totally tone deaf when it comes to any historical connections.Scholars we are not dealing with.
Again, springmom and all, stay safe. These petty details are unimportant.Cuba and Haiti are trashed beyond recognition. This storm has been a killer.Take no chances.

Good for you. Hold em together and keep your head down. Best of luck.

Sort of like the NO refugees from Katrina. Many of the cities around the country that took them in imported an instant crime wave. Weren't they particularly troublesome in Houston?

Very similar, these are from the city that on the local news have a shooting every night. I wont post the name of the city because I hate to generalize, but it is of personal concern. I have 3 abandon cars along my property line, which is less than 1 acre wide.

Tomorrow night is gonna be rough. I wont flood due to me being on high ground. Power loss will be almost 100% assured. The only question is how long. I guess if ya'll dont hear from me within a week send a St. Bernard with a barrel of whiskey.

It's gonna be interesting today, that's for sure. I'm about 15 miles north of I-10, north-west of Baytown which was evacuated yesterday morning @ 10am. Two days ago, wife & I decided we would ride it out...of course, now a potential track on abc13.com (http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/feature?section=weather/hurricane&id=6381857) shows the eye to pass about 20 miles to my west. Hmmmm...:scrutiny:

I've got my pistols ready to roll, should they be needed, and if we need to leave afterward my go-bag is stocked with ammo, knives, flashlight, etc. My neighborhood (whole community, really) is very peaceful. I don't expect trouble, but there's always a first time. Knowing power will be out, windows will need to be open, and some idiots just can't pass an open window...I tried to get some buckshot for the 20 ga. shotty yesterday, but no one was at the ammo counter at Wal-Mart.

Water (for drinking, flushing & washing up)...food...medicines...I think we'll be OK during the storm. We'll see what happend after...

Remember the Alamo!

My blessings to y'all as well.

San Antonio won't likely get a passing flatus from Ike....but then again, I'm a horrible judge on these things.

Stay safe!

I just loved the NWS (National weather service, perfectly worksafe!) Warning issued for Galveston.

National Weather Service said:
ife threatening inundation likely!

All neighborhoods... and possibly entire coastal communities...
will be inundated during the period of peak storm tide. Persons
not heeding evacuation orders in single family one or two story
homes may face certain death. Many residences of average
construction directly on the coast will be destroyed. Widespread
and devastating personal property damage is likely elsewhere.
Vehicles left behind will likely be swept away. Numerous roads
will be swamped... some may be washed away by the water. Entire
flood prone coastal communities will be cutoff. Water levels may
exceed 9 feet for more than a mile inland. Coastal residents in
multi-story facilities risk being cutoff. Conditions will be
worsened by battering waves closer to the coast. Such waves will
exacerbate property damage... with massive destruction of
homes... including those of block construction. Damage from beach
erosion could take years to repair.

This isn't the dim bulb mayor of New Orleans saying this, this is the weather geeks in Oklahoma City saying this. I'm glad I'm 300 miles inland in DFW.

Even then, my company is doing DR drills today in case our customers lose power or worse.

IKE FLIGHT is now well underway, and we are seeing folks here in Denton, up from the coast. No doubt they are seeing them in Dennison as well.

Personally, I thought all those folks should be heading east, to New Orleans, for a bit of payback via free lodging and some free cajun food, but that is just my opinion.

ROTFL! You know, DNS, I was just saying that last night..... Hey, we could evacuate, go to the casinos for a few days....

Except my brother in law is flying in Sunday afternoon. I'll put him to work helping clean up the neighborhood :evil::evil:

Re: the name....I have to admit, when I first heard the name of this thing, I thought of Ike as in "Ike & Tina Turner".:p

It's an absolutely beautiful morning so far. I'll take the dogs for enough walking that they can work off some of their nervous energy. They, and my joints, are well aware that a storm is coming. That and try NOT to watch that bloody 24/7 coverage of water sloshing over the seawall in east Galveston.

Yeah, John Steinbeck in Travels With Charlie notes that Texas is the only state in the union with a constitutional provision allowing it to secede from the US with only a popular vote.

-- and in the next paragraph he notes that only a Texan would care. :D
