Thanks for the input! So freakin hard to chose which one to get. Yeah I want to own both eventually, as well as a P226 Elite as well as a few more. Thing is there will be at least a year between guns if not longer. So I have to find out what will be the most versatile till I can get another one : ) Leaning towards the full size right now as I'd like something I can throw an X300 and CTC on when it's on the bedside stand......

Thanks for the input! Keep it coming! Just about decided on the full size but I'm sure I'll change my mind daily until I go out and pick it up : ) Anyone know a great place to get CPO Sigs?

Sorry to do this to you, but that's exactly the set up I have for my main HD gun, only mine is a P220 Carry DAK (double action only) :neener:

Either full size or the Carry model will work out fine for you.

Good luck and keep us posted :)

You're killing me man! Just when I thought I'd have to get a full size to put an X300 on it.......by the way, I'm kinda surprised there's enough rail for it to grip onto. Was it pretty close for the installation? Did it come with the CT grips? Great looking Sig by the way : )

Sorry!

The Carry rail is the same length as the full sized rail. The difference in the size of the slide is in the front part - the part that extends in front of the frame. The X300 fits on the rail perfectly. I believe the Carry frames are the same as the full sized frames. I'll have to check.
BTW - the CTs with the X300 is a great combo.

I bought the CTs from a vendor who is a member over on the Sig Forum

JC Weaponry Vancouver, WA. http://www.jcweaponry.com/

Jason is a great person the deal with and his prices for CTs were the cheapest around. AFAIK he still has some of the Sig logo'd CTs in stock.

I'd like to get a pair of those Sig Logo CTs while he still has em. I've tried to register on Sig forums with no luck. It doesn't like any of the email addresses I've used and I've tried Gmail. I've emailed them twice with no answer. If you're a member over there, maybe you can help me out?

Crap, looks like too many others have discovered the most excellent 220 Carry Elite ... no wonder I can't find another one locally.

P220 Elite vs P220 Elite Carry

That is now the question......the stainless models are out. Prohibitively expensive and way too heavy.....IMNSHO : )

The P220 Carry's slide length does make a difference if you carry the gun in the appendix position. I have found the Carry to be perfectly fine in that position. For me, the standard length slide of the P220 is a nutcracker.

I had a tough time getting on because I had an email address through AOL and they don't approve AOL
Get yourself an email address through fast mail http://www.fastmail.fm/mail/login/
After you do that, register on the Sig Forum using it and it will take a week or two to get approved.

You can still contact Jason at JC Weaponry Vancouver, WA. http://www.jcweaponry.com/ for the Sig logo CTs.
He is a vendor that sells to anyone.

I can't find them anywhere on the website...are they listed on there? Thanks for the email tip....worked like a charm!

Final Question....

So the question now is not which one, the P220 Elite of the P220 Elite Carry, but rather which one FIRST. Ideas? I'll own both in probably a year or so but which should I pick up first?

I have the P220R3 Carry Elite and love it! The SRT is simply awesome and is easily my favorite Sig. Yes, I have one that has the internal extractor and to date, zero problems.

Shoot Jason and email - [email protected]
You probably won't find them cheaper anywhere else.

Still need input from those with experience with these guns.....any help at all is great!

I think either one will be good for you.

I would good with the Carry first. I think it would fit both needs for you - easy to use as a CCW, or it would make a great home defense gun. The barrel is plenty long enough for it to be a very accurate gun.

Who knows, you might even change your mind by the time you are ready to buy a second Sig and you might want a different model by then.

Decision Made! But more questions......

Decision made! Going to get a P220 Elite, not the carry size. Only question is now.....SA/DA or SAO? Any takers on that? Thanks for all the help in getting me this far!!!

...

Easy, SAO..

Just compare the two at the gun store.. Feel the DA pull, then the SA pull on a DA/SA model. Then take a SAO model, rack it, push the thumb-safety up, then point the gun with your trigger finger pointing outside the trigger bar and your support grip thumb on-top of the thumb safety. Then press the thumb safety down while inserting your trigger finger, squeeze off the shot..

That's how it's gonna feel each, and every, shot..

SAO

Grrr......I just realized that if I go SAO I can't get the P220 Elite...I'd have to get the Elite Carry. Man...back to square one.....maybe :)

Do NOT get the SAO.

The safety is not ergonomically designed!! I had one and took it to a gun class. Here's the problem: the safety is not in the same position relative to the thumb as with the 1911. Therefore, I could not shoot it and keep my thumb on the safety. The tang of the pistol causes the hand to be too far back in relation to the safety. The result is joint pain under recoil.

What really needs to be done is to have Bruce Gray redesign it. The safety needs to be extended back, widened about 1/8", and lowered for a comfortable fit to the hand. This is all possible since there is extra metal below the level of the safety...just cut away the grip.

Thanks for that insight crebralfix. Having never held one or shot an SAO I didn't know much about how the safety was set up. I've also heard its very hard to get it back to safe. Pretty much decided on a P220 Elite SA/DA.....

Do not get the SAO...???

Well, everybody has a subjective opinion.

After getting mine, I wouldn't want anything else. I don't find it necessary to keep my thumb on the safety while shooting. Heck, I don't do that with a 1911 either.

Why make things more difficult?

I've owned a DA/SA model since 1980 and far prefer the SAO.

As always, YMMV.

A SIG with a stainless-steel frame is indeed notably heavier than those with aluminum alloy frames. This is more of a factor with holsters worn outside the belt than with IWB rigs, but is a factor in comfort, and only personal experience can reveal how much. My side-by-side comparison experience is with 1911 and P229 pistols with both frame materials, not the P220, but should be true of the P220, too.

I carried a P220 "European" in the early 1990's as a duty pistol and for personal carry when off the clock, and had NO trouble with weight or size when concealing it. I carry P229s nowadays because my employer, a PD, standardized on the .40 S&W as a duty cartridge. The P229 was an authorized choice from 1997, whereas the .40 P226 was added to the list in 2008. I like the P226, as its barrel-slide length and sight radius match the P220, but switching is expensive, as we buy our duty weapons.

If starting from scratch, and .45 was a choice, I would go with the full-length P220.

Regarding SAO, I would have stood in the line in the rain to get one in the 1990's. I was used to 1911 pistols, and it took much work to become proficient with the DA-to-SA transition of the P220. I did finally get used to the transition, but nowadays, I mostly use SIGs with the DAK trigger system.
