I had an accident. I stepped off of a moving vehicle on which I was operating 'side saddle'. Wow, that's a double-dumbass on me. Tore my ACL, MCL and all but destroyed my medial meniscus. I was 300 feet from the house. I suppose I was daydreaming of the Bridger-Teton Range and all its glory. I had an ATV loaded with bags of various grains/vegetables. Thought I saw a pair of grouse.......

Anyoldways, I am in post-op now and the cool air is making its way down here to the Post Oak Savannah. My BIL is bummed but has been going out since the 10th and has been calling and getting chuckled at. He has some friends to hunt with but he somehow enjoys my company...

Ya'll, I am getting the 'Bug'... I need to hear from anyone who hunts in the mountains... especially Wyo. south of Jax. Any and all will be appreciated.
Please share with us.

Thanks,

wh

well... south of jackson... north of dubois, actually, a full curl ram tipped over from a 165 grain 300 win mag...

ram got hung in the tree during the pack out. grizzly still got the ram down, ate it. head was salvaged and is at taxidermist. pack in was in the high 70's, pack out was under 3 feet of snow and cold...

next week an elk is likely to tip over south of casper - probably will be a 225 grain hornady fired from a 338 win mag...

two weeks after that, there is likely to be a massive mule deer that will tip over, and probably from a 162 grain hornady out of the 7 rum...

we just finished off the last of the moose, harvested out of the dubois area in '06...

mountains are beautiful this time of year, elk are still bugling a little, antelope abound...

dakotasin, I don't like you very much, but I'll start if you take me with you. Lucky, Lucky man. Good hunting and come home safe. Waterhill heal up fast and get back out in the woods.

Waterhill,
My sincerest condolences.

Because misery loves company, maybe my situation will give you some cheer:
My problem?
I have 2 SoDak WR deer tags and 1 Wyo Any Whitetail tag. (Applied for Wyo in Feb and SD in mid Jun.) Got laid off Jul 1. Haven't been able to find work since. Savings is burning at an alarming rate. Even if I get a job tomorrow, this years Non-Resident tag fees will be chalked up as a donation as it is unlikely an employer will give me time off that soon. Nuts! :cuss: :cuss: :banghead: :fire:

Guess I won't have that Crown Royal with Dad this year. :(

I guess I'll have to look forward to next year...

I just got back from hunting in Northeast Wyoming - Black Hills National Forest area near Aladdin.

The amount of Elk around was astounding - I came down one night towards camp and as I cleared the tree line - Two beautiful bull Elk were standing 30-35 yards away from me on the other side of a small pond.

My dad and I came back with four does.

The Coyotes were thick, the moon was full and bright, and the weather was warm. Needless to say it was a tough hunt...

Dakotasin and Huntergirl, thankyou. That was refreshing to hear, actually. This would have been my second elk season in Wyoming. I was opting for a mid-Oct. gun hunt this year. Last year I arrived on the 8th of Sept. for bow season and I had a blast running uphill towards the ones that called back. Had a small game license and bagged some grouse. Cooked them on the grill at sis's house. Saw the largest living Muledeer Buck in my life in the Hobacks as well. Most memorable moment: We went into the Hobacks a wed. pm. Later a storm showed up as we were being called to a bullfight. It rained like a cow on a flat rock. Right before the bad stuff came close, we had a big dude not 30 yards away. Storm got flashy, so we ALL hightailed it out of there. I swear I saw some cows running parallel with us downhill....Ther was a small tornado at Hoback Junction that night

Poper, At least you can walk! lol

Waterhill;

I see you're in East Texas. That has a direct bearing on hunting just south of Jackson Wyoming, here's why. The elevation you are acclimated to is likely under 100 feet above sea level, or something so close to that it's not a factor. The valley floor around Bondurant is above a mile high, and the mountains go very steeply UP from there. Not only is your knee recovering, but it's also extremely difficult for you to do the exercise necessary to prepare your heart & lungs to deal with the altitude. Plan your hunt accordingly.

Altitude sickness is real and debilitating. Climbing game trails in that area with a healing knee is an excellent way to damage it again. Let alone having to pack something out.

I'm not trying to bust yer bubble, but your guide needs to be able to take your physical condition into account & plan around it. He needs to know now, not when you arrive. Your chances of having an enjoyable time and a sucessful hunt rather heavily depend upon it.

You said you wanted to hear from someone from Jackson. Well? I work in Jackson four days a week, as I have for years. A buddy called a nice bull in this past week. He shot him at 40 feet.

cf, I am not hunting this season. Sorry If I am vague about my situation, I am still on pain killers and it has been over a week since surgery. Another 3 weeks before I can walk/put weight on my leg. I probably wont even hunt whitetail this season in Texas.

BTW, I am at about 390' above sea level.

Don't want pitty, just want to hear about the mountains and the animals and the special moments of the hunt.

Listened to wolves ravage a cow moose last week in the Bridger Tetons near Pinedale. Bull moose buddy sounded like he put one or more wolf down in the frey. Hope he got away, Think he did by the movement and bellowing. Did not get my deer. 2 young atv'ers saw me move into the woods , making my way to the edge of a meadow before sunset. They followed fairly closely. Before I could get into my shooting spot, one of them got 2 rounds downrange to the buck I'd hoped for. Well, maybe heck, I taught 'em how to get off their atv's and hunt, heehee. This week will be both elk and deer. Will see what I come home with on Thursday. I LOVE the Bridger Tetons. Hurry up and get well.
