$199 Seems kinda low for true Finish M39s (2 to choose from). I thought they were selling for $300 plus these days. I was unable to get a close look at either, as I was in a hurry, but plan on returning with cash this week :D .

They appear to be in decent shape. Decent, as you won't mistake them for NIB rifles, but they are not beat to crap either. I do need to inspect the bore very carefully for pitting and worn grooves.

Assuming these are in fact M39s in solid condition, is $199 a fair price? Again, it seems more than fair, which makes me wonder if they are really just Soviet M38s (no bayonet). I'll be checking the markings very carefully as well using this site:

Also assuming they are M39s, which would be the most desireable? Tikka, SAKO, VKT?

Thank you for your help!

Sounds legit to me. One of my local gun shops has a Sako M39 going for $250. I don't know anything about the different Finnish manufacturers so I'll let some one else fill us in on that as I'm interested in them too.

$199 for any M39 is a great deal. A Tikka M39 will run over $500. The SAKO and VKT are basically the same and equally common. The Sneaks, B-Barrel and SKy marked ones are uncommon and should bring a little more money. They all shoot the same, very good (under 1.5 MOA). I have 6 and they are all very accurate and well made.

Tikka barreled M-39s are rarer than the other two mentioned. All are highly collectable however and that is a nice price if the rifles are in reasonable working condition. Take a small light and check the bore condition. If allowed see how far a 7.62x54R bullet will insert down the muzzle. If it inserts all the way to the rim of the cartridge case it could mean they have been counterbored or the rifling is gone. I doubt that however as most Finn rifles were usually well cared for despite seeing some rough action. Good luck and post pics if you get one, or both.

I just bought a VKT for $275, but I've seen them under $200 for ones with more wear. It seems usually the bore and metal are good, but the stock may be beat up. Check out www.gunsnammo.com for a good price reference. Or just buy from there like I did :)

Thank you for the great info. So it would seem that, all things equal, order of preference would be:

1. Tikka
2. B SKy
3. VKT or SAKO

If allowed see how far a 7.62x54R bullet will insert down the muzzle. If it inserts all the way to the rim of the cartridge case it could mean they have been counterbored or the rifling is gone.

Good tip, I'll give that a try!

As I said, I was unable to see these "M39s" up close. $199 seems to good to be true, even if the stocks in are in less than pristine condition. So that's why I half expect to find that these supposed Finish M39s are actually Soviet M38s. I'll know as early as Tuesday, hopefully.

$200 for a M39 in anything other than sewer pipe condition is right. I found a stack locally for ~$250 in good/very good condition. Dug through and found one nigh excellent except for a crack in the upper handguard.

Nice guy. That is a ranking system and the poster is ranking B and SkY rifles together as desirability.

I prefer the SkY over the B and Tikka, as both the B and Tikka are made from M91 or 91/30 barrels (FN and Tikka made) post war while the SkY was a war-time production. While rarer, the Tikka doesn't have the history that the SkY does, and that is what draws me to them. Worse, even though post-war, the Tikka is rare enough folks will tend not to shoot them so their potential is not learned.

Well, my suscpicions were correct ...

These were NOT Finish M39s, but Soviet produced M38s. The tag hanging from the rifles said "M39", but this was just the first 3 digits of the serial # on the receiver :banghead: .

And $199 is a little steep for an M38, though the bores appeared to be in good shape, except for a lot of crud buildup.

On well, I guess I'm relieved. I really am not in the position to buy another gun yet anyway.

I've book marked this thread for future reference though, as I will get an M39 one day. Thank you for all your guidance!

Oh, :cuss: :fire: and:banghead:

Here I was almost ready to "live and let live" with the Soviets and let bygones be bygones, and now THIS.

I was ready to go looking for one of the M39s.... bad luck for all of us.
