for my bday present to myself.

i love milsurps so it has to be that and these-

NOT semi auto
more than 60 years old
either easy to mount a scope onto NON permanently
or have aperture sights. preferably the latter.
not impossible to reload for, i dont mind casting for the bullets either.
accurate by means of at least 4" 100 yard groups.
preferrably able to be better with handloads
and last but not least- fun fun fun.

+1 for rich history.

I'm thinkin enfield .303 or MAYBE mas 36 (but because it doesnt have a rich history im not sure)

of course there are the 1917's and 1903's....budget wise im looking at less than 1500.

I was going to suggest a No.4 Lee Enfield (which is still a great choice), but then I saw your budget. If I were you, I'd go with a Krag-Jorgensen in .30/40.

Enfield No. 4 (Savage if you want something that is a little less common, for a little more money, but otherwise, the same AFAIK).

My Savage was I think $279 shipped, the wood is in pretty much mint condition, with a nice "tiger stripe" to it, metal has some wear and patina, but overall pretty darn good, shouldnt be hard at all to find one that can do 4moa like you want, has aperature sights, is WELL under your max price for a great one, .303 ammo is easy to find, not particularly expensive, and easy to handload to save $$ or improve accuracy, easy to find over 60 years old, and the action is known for being really smooth. All around, they are good guns, and meet all your requirements.

But, there really are a ton of milsurps that will meet your requirements, so I'm sure you'll get plenty of good suggestions.

i have three k31's, got them when they were cheap. yeah my budget is high cause i have been saving up for like, 6 months.
um, im liking these suggestions!

question about handloading the .303. i heard enfields have extra large chambers that would over work brass.
is there some kind of special die, like for the k31 (the k31's chamber are a little bit larger than the k11's, redding makes a die that's a little bit larger, not working the brass so bad. actually standard k11 dies work fine, but slightly overworks brass), however to my understanding the british chambers are a bigger difference.
i have until february to figure it out. im seriously thinking between the 1903a3 and the enfield. of course for the ultimate fun gun (to my mind) would be buying a sporterized 1903a3 that doesnt have a D/T reciever and refitting it to its military configuration.

+1 on the K31 Swiss. I paid 225 for mine and this weekend I shot a 1 5/8 inch three shot group with iron sights and GP11 surplus ammo. There are also really nice target diopter sights available for the K31. For around 500 bucks you could have a very nice long range.

thats a good one, swedish mauser. have a carl gustaf 1920 m96, no target though. i was thinking sniper though....
