Recently purchased a Saiga in 7.62x39. I've looked over the web, and apparently the cheapest American-made stocks for it (wooden) will cost me upwards of 30-40 dollars :what: .

So I've decided, having practically all the wood-working tools a man could want, I'd try it myself. Of course this lead to some questions:

What kind of wood do you make a rifle stock out of? I'm pretty sure plywood may be a little to weak for what I'm doing. But at the same time I don't want something to heavy.

Your best bet would probably be a piece of maple, bastogne (pronounced ba-stone), or a laminate of various colors.

However, I have seen a rifle stock made out of an old fence post, and then sprayed with some plastic liner that constricted as it cured, with multiple coats being applied. Not sure of the liner manufacturer, I think it was something called Zytel.

Good luck!

plywood should work, provided you keep it sealed (i.e., painted) It's already stable, and if you screw it up or don't like it, you're not out too much.
