just wondering how you average sized guys are concealing you 5" 1911s...im probably going to end up getting another piece to carry more easily but since that is a little ways off, and i know plenty of people do it, i just wanted to see/hear what you guys think are the best setups to do this with. thanks a lot guys!

Best in my experience is a Milt Sparks VM-2 and a good belt. I prefer RafterS or Beltman belts.

I haven't tried everything out there but a good percentage and that's where I've arrived.

An outside the belt holster that is well made will pull the gun (and especially the butt) in close to the body and, with a cover garment, (aka loose overshirt) the gun will disappear.

My everyday rig is a Mitch Rosen ARG on a beltman belt. I carry a 5" 1911 every day, 12-14 hours a day with this setup and it conceals easily with either an untucked polo or t shirt.

Well i dont Carry a full size 5" but i do carry a full size frame 4" Pro Carry 2. after using a piece of crap nylon holster i found exactly what i wanted. i now use a inside-the-pant leather holster by Galco. its super high quality leather that wont damage the finish on ur 1911 and it conceals the gun well even with minimal baggy cloathing. a true fullsize 5" might be best carried under-arm with a harness system. whatever you do use leather. good luck

I like an OWB leather holster and a heavy leather gun belt from the Beltman. I usually top it off with a sports coat, but a hoodie or a jacket works fine too. I will occasionally use a IWB rig, but the OWB is more comfortable over time.

I carry a SIG 220 most of the time now. Still large service auto. Comp-tac MTAC holster. Very comfortable and conceals well. However, when I do carry my 1911, it is in a COM 3 from HBE Leatherworks. The holster is similar to the Milt Sparks Versa Max II. I've had it for quite a while and the only improvements I'd recommend would be an increase in the cant of the holster to tuck the butt of the pistol farther in.

In the future, I'll likely buy an MTAC shell to swap onto the holster I already have so I can carry the 1911 in it.

I picked up a IWB holster from Stoner in a gun show. He put it in a bucket of water for a few, and then wrapped my gun in Glad press & seal. He stuck the gun in the wet holster and then put the whole thing in a Vacc-u-seal. I took it out in a few hours and let the holster dry for a day. Molded perfectly. I can hide it under a white t-shirt IWB. Doesn't really matter here in Georgia if you show or print. We can actually open carry if we want. I don't want the attention though. Most people act really suprised that I am packing a 5" 1911 and they see no trace of it.

I carry mine in a Galco Summer Comfort holster at about 4:00. I'm a pretty skinny guy (32" waist), but with a fairly loose t-shirt (no sm-ediums ) it doesn't print at all.

i can carry a full sized 1911 under a loose t-shirt if i'm willing to wear an IWB holster (i used a Milt Sparks Summer Special)

an OWB holster is much more comfortable and faster too...i like the Alessi ACP

the critical part to making any good holster work is a good belt. stiff enough and wide enough...i use a 5-stich Wilderness Instructor's belt

both these holsters...and their copies...were designed by a working undercover narcotics officer to carry his Colt LW Commander

so far what im liking seems to be the ARG from mitch rosen, but ive heard a lot of good things about the kydex models from raven concealments...can anybody help me weigh the pros and cons of these two holsters? the arg looks to be more comfortable, but i cant really tell if it has a piece that covers the thumb safety against my body, so im worried about it potentially flicking off (probably not extremely likely) or just being uncomfortable. any help is much appreciated, thanks in advance!

Over the years, I paid hundreds of dollars on holsters which I THOUGHT would be good, but I always came back to the OWB, slot-and-loop (Avenger style) or double-loop (concealable stlye) for thebest comfort, cant, and general draw.

I like the leather, and I like the curved hop contour shape. The rear loop pulls the grip inward to the body, and the front slot or loop holds the slide comfrotably.

Yeah, even the Cheap Uncle Mike's super Belt slide holsters (old style) with the dual belt slots, sere the same purpose.

I I knew now, what I have spent over 20 years in holsters, I woul dhae enough for at least 20 more firearms.

The weight is distributed nicely for me with the 2 slots. I still carry a polymer framed or alloy framed gun whenever I can, though.

if you like polymer...and a little security too...i recently got a Safariland ALS paddle holster for my S&W 1911 Sc. very fast and secure, i'm still getting used to the drawing motion.

at the other end of the price spectrum is the Fobus paddle. i have the open ended slide type to fit a varity of 1911s

I'm not an average size guy (yes thats a full size 1911), but I think the VMII will work for just about anybody.
