Also, let's hear from some S&W model 3913 owners on how they like their compact 3rd generation handguns. I am considering one......

The 3913, 3913TSW and 3913 Ladysmith appear to be the most popular 3rd gen S&W pistol. I have heard nothing but praises for this gun. I don't personally own one, but you may get more replies at the smith and wesson forum.

I have a 3913, and my wife has the 3913 Ladysmith. Both excellent guns, reliable, accurate, light, and slim.

Many rounds thru mine, fewer thru wife's, but we really like them. I also have my old 6906 from my leo days, but I prefer the silmmer grip of the 3913 for civilian purposes.

They'll feed about anything that will fit into the magazine.

I have the 3913 LS (bought it on closeout) and really, really like it. It is very concealable, accurate, and completely reliable.

I have a 3913 LadySmith. (Go ahead, joke about it, I dare you. :p) A very attractive, light, slim, accurate and reliable gun. :) I let a shooting buddy who normally prefers 1911s handle it and he was impressed with its trigger, even though it is a double-action. Two slight negatives: the bore does sit a bit high over your hand and the grips are a little too flat for the best hold. I was still impressed enough to purchase a Milt Sparks holster for it.

I too am looking at these compact autos.
I like the 3913, the 908, and the Chief's Specials.
I like them for their weight, size and the manual safety.
Just have to find one around here for a little less than i have seen them.
Here at Guns and Ammo I have seen a 908 for $550 and a CS45 for $670.
But I would love to have either one, once funds become available.

Same situation here, although, the wife's LS is still in hiding until her birthday. My 3913 was the 2nd handgun I bought and of the first 4, it's the only one I still own. The Witness, the Firestar, and the Daewoo all went bye-bye. The 3913, however is not going anywhere, ever. Next to my Glock 23 it's the most reliable, comfortable to shoot and comfortable to carry gun I own. It's also prettier than the Glock. IMO, the S&W 3rd gen autos are probably some of the most underrated guns out there.

Borch, I have heard the same thing, that Smith autos are underrated.
I have also heard that they are extremely reliable.
And yep, good looking!!

My 3913 is the only semi auto in my collection, that has never malfunctioned.

The current round count is between 3 and 4 thousand rounds......trouble free.

It does not get any better than that IMO.

I'm another

I have a 3913 Lady Smith with Hogue grips. I plan on sending the slide to Smith to have the thing bead blasted to remove a couple minor scratches and oh yeah the huge "LADY SMITH". Love the gun, hate the bling bling.

I bought a new 3913 in 1995. It has never bobbled in any way. My Son has asked for it and I've put it away for him..

I bought a NIB 6906 some time back because the 6906 is actually a double-stack 3913... I really like it.

I bought a NIB 3913LS recently, and I love it. Crap my wife loves it too...

I bought a NIB CS9 even more recently and I love it too.. Crap, my loves it also..

All of my 3rd generation Smiths came with a Lifetime Warranty from one of the few firearms manufacturers who actually have a great Customer Service department and have a great reputation for backing their guns.

FWIW, I've had a small pile of 9mm compact pistols over the decades and none, OVERALL, are better than the 3913's as a personal self defense 9mm pistol...

Just personal opinion/no offense.

Jesse

P.S. Here's a photo of my nib 5906 & 6906 and then of the nib 3913LS & CS9.

3913!!!!!!!!!!!

I own a P225, Walther P5, HK P7, an a Walther P99, yet I carry a 3913 for all the reasons listed. To me its the best CCW 9mm single stack out there!!!

idp:

And when I want to shoot the absolute tightest groups I bring out the P7... :D

But.... I carry the 3913LS or CS9.....;)

I have a 908 that is an absolute joy. It's currently my night stand gun and sometime carry piece. Flat, accurate, handy. I can't ask for much more. The price was down right reasonable, too, for a gently used, in the box w/ all the papers pistol. It's one that'll probably go to my niece's boy, when he turns 17 in oh, about 16 years. Talk about optimism on my part:)

I have a number of the compact 39XX series. I have not learned to love the DAO, but the 3013/14 908 are the best carry guns that I have used.

Someone will point out that a 3913 with Hogue grips is almost the same size as a Glock 19 and a tad heavier. Agreed, but I shoot the Smiths much better.

Some don't like the mag safety and slide mounted thumb safety and decocker.

When carrying in a holster, I leave the safety OFF. When in a console, briefcase, pocket, whatever..the safety is ON. The mag safety is not a plus nor a minus, just a feature that you can learn to live and love(if you are fighting someone for your gun, drop the mag and you have effectively disabled the gun).

Find one that is used. You should be able to get a used 3913 for around $400. Much prettier than a new 908 and has all metal parts.

3913 as carry

The Lone Haranguer in his post said he owned a Lady Smith 3913 . I don't think anyone could fault that ,cause too many of us guys like the gun also. Whats not to like! all metal for those who don't like plastic guns, and flat as the pancake in a pocket ! My pick as the best flat , all metal small 9mm ! Smith has sold a ton of them over the years.

You know there is a member on the forum who collects S&W autos. Saw a group pic of his and there must have been 15 in one frame. Anyone know a thread with those pics? Any more auto pics anyone cares to share?

You are so correct. The only gun that comes close to the P7's accuracy is my Browning HP.

Don't live in the past...

Unless you are an old school type of muchacho, ;), or plan on buying the S&W 9mmNATO pistol for collector value, I'd avoid going with a S&W 3913 pistol.
If you look at S&W's website, www.smithandwesson.com , you will see they do not even sell the "3rd Generation" 3900 series 9mm models anymore.

I'd look into a Ruger, HK, Glock or SIG-Sauer 9mmNATO. :D

Rusty:

Respectfully, you do know that the 3rd generation Smiths have been discontinued by S&W altogether, right?

And if you understand that I'm sure you understand that there are still thousands of NIB 3rd gen. Smiths available at gun shops all over the place as well as several on line dealers, of which CDNN is just one?

A NIB discontinued 3913 (such as I purchased from CDNN recently) comes with a lifetime warranty, and if you have any experience at all with these pistols you should know chances are excellent any NIB 3rd generation S&W pistol you buy today will probably still be in excellent condition when your heirs are shooting it decades from now?

And I don't know what that "9mm NATO" business is all about. The Smiths shoot the old standard 9mm (9X19) ammo available all over the place, and in fact is the most popular centerfire caliber & cartridge in the world.

I'm certainly not knocking the other manufacturers you mentioned as I've owned a 9mm Glock, Sig, and HK.. I don't care for the Ruger centerfire pistols, but that's just personal preference, but none of them are any better, or will last any longer, or will perform a role as a self defense firearm better than the 3rd gen Smiths.

If a person prefers plastic over steel, or has a preference for another brand of firearm I have no problem with that but I guarantee you if you care to research (or google) 3rd gen Smiths in general and the excellent 3913 series in particular you will find they have a very good, well deserved reputation and are considered by many knowledgeable in the firearms industry as the high water mark for S&W pistols.

Just personal opinion, no offense..

Best Wishes,

Jesse

Thanks guys for all your input, very insightful information, I think you have talked me into a 3913...............

For one 9MM Nato IS 9MM Para , secondly there is nothing wrong with a nice 3rd gen . I ended up trading a CZ75 for a 3913 that I nowuse for summer CCW
