I was at a gun show today and the owner of a store which sells ammunition told us that the supply of .223 & .762 is about to dry up, owing to the issues we are having with Russia. The .762 caliber will be in short supply, because it is mostly Russians made, and the .223 because it is needed for troops.
The U.S. was supposed to be switching to the 6.8 round. But I can see where a large chunk of .223 might be lost, as Russia has been making great inroads into U.S. ammo market. Thier Bear and Wolf brands are a lot cheaper than U.S. and others brass cased ammo

problem #1, you believed what you heard at a gun show...in other news, gun show beef jerky prices at an all-time low!

He told you this to sell more ammo. Does he expect you to believe NATO troops are using Wolf ammo? Maybe they got hit up with a big order from Osama and the thugs from Afganistan. Things like this are what lead to ammo shortages. This is all the more reason to have an extra case or two of ammunition on hand. Me? I would have laughed in his face.

I've never heard of a mod using a mop & bucket in a forum
I'm careful about duplicate postings, haven't had a problem until early this AM, in over 900 postings. I spent a night (and early morning) at the computer.

I'd swear the THR website must have been performing maintenance or something. Things went dead, and I carefully posted, trying to prevent duplicate postings. Hey, I'm pretty embarrassed, but after all, it's only a damn bulletin board. I'll not lose sleep, trust me.

Yeah and if I were selling cars I would tell customers the government was banning car production so buy now dont wait!

i would not worry about the supply drying up. somebody was most likely yanking your chain. a lot of people cry wolf the first time a leaf rattles, without even seeing a tiny bit of fur. just go about your business as usual. if you want to stockpile ammo, go for it. nothing wrong with that. just make sure to store it properly. if there was going to be a shortage of 5.56 ammo, it should have been when the fighting in iraq was in full battle head. which i believe has slowed down dramaticly since the initail invasion of iraq. besides that, 5.56, and 223 are 2 different cartridges. the 5.56 is a military round, made to different specs, with much higher pressures. 223 is the civilian version, made with lower pressures and usually different bullets. so, while production of 223 rounds could be converted to 5.56 very easily, the only reason for doing that would be if there was an upcoming invasion of some military opperation. hopefully, that is not going to happen

Best thing to say is " OMG I better stock up....I'll take all you've got... you will take a cashiers check from the First National Bank of Namibia won't you?"

Gun shows are not what they used to be. The last one I went to was mostly "junk"...way too many over-priced used guns, trinkets, etc.

I was ready to leave but when I spotted a large collection of tables in the back with all new guns.

I too think the dealer was pulling your leg, intentionally or not. But it is not inconceivable that if a "Cold War II" starts between US and Russia, the supply of Russian-made ammo could dry up. Or a future president (whistle;)) might sign an XO banning its importation. In no case is this going to affect the supply of military issue ammo.

Complete crap. The US has had no plans to switch to the 6.8 for years. The round was tested and dismissed years ago.

Issue two, why is all the 5.56 being re-directed now with the surge and all past? More crap. And there is NO shortage of 5.56 or 7.62 in theater.

I loath gunshow dealers who pray on fear mongering.

It reminds me of the guy that sells body armor at the Crossroads of the West shows with big signs about how it is about to be outlawed and copies of bills introduced years ago that aren't even on the table.

Well first hand. .223 ammo is going way up. I have seen it jump about 20 to 30 dollars per thousand rounds in a month at the gunshows latley. I just bought a case. And the guy told me that they are back ordered again.

True, the price of ammo is going up. The primary reason isn't because of conflicts that exist in the real world or a gun dealer's head though. It's due to an ever-shrinking supply of copper meeting an ever-growing demand.

Even if there is a temporary lull in manufacturing, there will be a vacuum which will be filled. Where there's a market, there's producer.

The reason prices are going up also has a large part to do with a weakening dollar and cost of material. (brass)

There's a body armor dealer at my local gunshow and he's had a sign up for over two years now about how the government is going to ban sales of body armor to civilians, so BUY NOW NOW NOW! Buy extras! Buy for your friends! Buy for freedom! Why do you hate freedom?

Srsly, the first time I read it, I went home and did some digging, could find nothing about any pending legislation. The next time I saw it, I just chuckled.
