Brinks commerical... Just call me a cynic

I believe it was said earlier. Brinks sells alram systems, not guns. Might be a good commercial for SW, Glock, Ruger, etc., to copy - basically a scare tactic.

Nothing against Brinks but I advocate investing in a surplus 870 and a good dog.

I have Brinks service and I am happy with it, My system has a fire alarm built in the system. If you are not home and there is a fire (even smoke) the system will aleart Brinks and they will call the fire department. Also if you are sound asleep and someone breaks glass or opens a door the alarm goes off. The alarm sound is very loud and will wake anyone up. If my alarm were to go off, the first thing that I would do is grab my S&W Model 13 which is located by my bed. It is loaded with Remington 158 grain HP's. I would not call the police until I knew what was going on. If there was an intruder, the police would have to bring a dead body remover with them. Another good thing about the system is that if you are not at home and the alarm goes off, the police will be there before you are. If you are not at home and the alarm goes off, Brinks will call you on your cell phone. Is the system perfect? NO. but it beats having nothing at all. My system costs $27.99 a month. No I don't work for Brinks. Different strokes for different folks. To me its worth it.

I dont think they are THE answer, but I believe they are a positive deterent.
Unless you live out from any neighbors a blaring alarm will get someones attention. A lot of simple break ins are also done by kids and they will scatter at the first blare of a alarm.
The new systems have battery back ups and the "wireless" option instead of using a phone land line.. The last system we had put in actually used both, if it got no dailtone on land line it went straight to cell. So that takes away the cutting of the power/phone cord scenario.
Fire detection is also something most of them have now which I think is a big plus.
The new systems are super easy to use, now even with a key chain arm/disarmer just like the one for your car doors....
My only gripe with them is most of them want you to sign a 3 year contract.

If everyone had an 870 by the bed, what the hell do they need Brinks for?

If you're sound asleep, and woken up by the alarm, after you know where your family is, why wouldn't you call the police?

Alarm systems are good for what they are good for. Alerting of a possible problem, either intruder or fire. If you are at home they give you advanced warning that could save your life, especially in a fire situation. (Don't forget regular smoke detectors though. Fire Prevention Week.) Don't count on them to save your life or call the police or fire dept for you. As a 911 operator, I don't know of the times that we have taken a call from an alarm service advising a fire alarm at a residence that we are already on scene fighting a working fire. We've been notified by passerbys or the owner 5-10 minutes beforehand. Also I know most of the police and sheriff's offices in our area run non substantiated alarms without lights and siren and are low priority. That meaning if the alarm service has not made contact with someone at the residence confirming a problem. So while they are good things to have, they should be looked on as enhancements to your security but not depended on for your safety. Let them warn you and the neighbors and then have your own defenses and CALL 911 to get reinforcements on the way.

All Brinks can do is call the police. I could do that myself.

But, the Brinks Alarm System can call the police when you are not home, and it can call the Fire Dept., too.
It can also call the police while you are are asleep.

Yoda, you're right. Help arrives late. When they use their own "security" people, they don't really want to do much, like actually pull a weapon. They want, themselves, to notify police.

I think the homeowner should call....
