i have shot alot of 45's plastic and metal, plastics you can keep...out of my 1911's i'd definitely go with my s&w s/s 1911, you can have the rest of my pistol's, .....just playing.

The standard size Dark Earth M&P 45 w/thumb safeties I bought earlier this year has continued to impress me.

So much so that I'm considering picking up one of the compact models. The difference in overall length (8.05" v. 7.125") and height (5.5" v. 4.8") and weight (29.6 oz v. 26.2 oz) of the standard & compact .45 models seems as though it might be just enough to make the compact a viable alternative for those times when I feel like carrying something larger than a J-frame, and don't mind wearing a belt holster.

I have owned 2 1911 .45's

A para ord P14-45, which failed miserably.
A Kimber Pro CDP II, which is in the process of failing miserably.

Dunno. Might go back with Colt because I have had really great luck with my .38 super.

Check this out first; you might change your mind. Since I posted this I have talked to 4 other people with the same problem - Looks like Sig may not have done their homework on this gun. I love it, but am starting to wonder about it:

I'd have to go with the M1911. I have three of them, an M1927 Argentine (built on Colt machinery, under Colt supervision, and basically a 1930s-era Colt), a Fed Ord kit gun -- I finished and assembled the parts, and a Kimber Classic (MK I). The latter is my carry gun, the other two currently wear .22 Conversion kits -- a Colt Service Ace on the M1927, and a Ciener on the kit gun.

I also have 3 .45 Colt revolvers, a Colt New Service made in 1906 and two Ruger Blackhawks, one with a 7 1/2" barrel and one with a 5 1/2" barrel.

The latter two guns can be loaded as hot as I care to shoot.

Probably my Springfield GI .45 in stainless. Its stock right now, but I bought it has my project gun...my plans for it include a loop style hammer, a set of aluminagrips, and possibly a new trigger set.

SaxonPig, why is your front sight on backwards?

Keeps it from snagging on the holster when you draw -- not uncommon in the 60s and 70s when good service sights for the M1911were rare.

Ruger Blackhawk in .45 long colt for sure. That covers everything from powderpuff plinker to bear blaster. I live in the out in the sticks, if I lived in a more urban area I'd want a Kimber of some sort.

Not backwards, custom made from key stock to allow a good sight picture but still allow snag-free draw from concealment. Rear sight is from a K frame S&W. That's the way we did it back in the days before everyone and his uncle was building custom 1911s and parts abounded. This was my personal defense pistol for many years.

Does it have to be a .45 ACP aka automatic colt pistol or only in .45 Caliber?

Semi automatic pistol or ANY handgun including revolvers?

If anything in .45 Caliber is allowed in this thread - I would pick my Ruger Blackhawk in 45Colt aka long colt.

I do NOT own a automatic pistol in 45 ACP.

If I did BUY one but I doubt it - I would choose a GLOCK in 45ACP because I love Glock in the Model 19C and Model 19 = 9mm.

My HUSBAND loves 45ACP, 45Colt aka long colt, etc.

He LOVES Kimber, Colt, etc. in semi automatic pistols. He loves his Kimber so much that people who shot his gun went out and bought Kimbers. Maybe Kimber should give him a FREE GIFT! He just got a second Kimber and it is really pretty. I have not shot it yet.

He loves Ruger, S&W, Freedom Arms, etc.

I am not even going into rifles or a shotgun now.

It does everything very well. With the 10 round magazine it conceals easily and comfortably in an IWB. Lock in the 13 round magazine and it's a fantastic full-size duty weapon. With only a spring change it'll run .45 Super all day long (for the four-legged predators).

With my original post I was sticking with .45 acp, but since everyone is chiming in about .45 Colt, Ill jump in.

My old model blackhawk is tough as they come and I would NEVER trade that gun away.
It takes some incredible loads, but is fun as heck to shoot as well!
Theres just somethin' bout .45 Colt.

If you dont own one, go buy one!!

Colt Lightweight Commander.

I love 1911's as much as the next guy, but for me it's a Smith and Wesson 625 45 Colt. The perfect balance between strength and size/usability. It'll take a solid 45 Colt load, which for my money is better than a 44 Mag and with less chamber presure. Yet it is not so big, heavy, and bulky that you don't want to carry it in the field. No it's not a 454 but the real world differance isn't as great at "handgun" range as some of us would like to think. Beside I'll gladly accept the trade off of a better package and give up what additional power the 454 (or 460 for that matter) has. If I had to pick a 1911 or a carry gun it would be a 10 MM, sorry no 45 ACP's for me.
