GUN CONTROL IS KILLING US
By David Kenik

The Virginia Tech shootings that occurred not long ago demonstrated a tragedy that runs deeper than the obvious. The shootings are but one symptom of what is wrong with the mindset and thought processes of all too many people.

The second tragedy that day was that there was no one shooting back. Any potential heroes were disarmed by the school's "no guns" policy. Ironically, just last year the Virginia General Assembly failed to pass a bill that that would have enabled the carry of guns on campus. School officials hailed the decision by proclaiming that students and faculty "can feel safe" knowing that there are no guns on campus.

The reality is that there are guns on campus--guns in the hands of criminals. That is the problem with "gun-free zones": They make the uninformed feel better when, in fact, they create victim-disarmament zones, or what I call "criminal empowerment zones."

Just as a burglar will pick a home without a noisy dog, someone bent on human destruction will choose a location where their heinous crimes can be carried out unfettered by the return gunfire of the potential victims. That is why shooting rampages don't take place at police stations or gun ranges. Israel solved the problem of school attacks by arming teachers. Hijackings of Israel's EL AL airliners ceased when armed marshals were placed on every flight.

The most astonishing tragedy at Virginia Tech was the lack of survival mindset of the victims. Forensic evidence shows that many victims had wounds consistent with attempts to shield themselves, but there were no defensive on the shooter. That tells us that victims did not fight back and allowed themselves to be executed. Their absence of a survival mindset is testament to the success of a liberal society's campaign to train us not to think for ourselves, not to act for ourselves and to rely on others for our safety an well being.

The Virginia Tech tragedy was one of several in recent years that illustrate liberal ideology at it worst. In many cases the consequences of not shooting back was death.

It is after things like this that one appreciates movements like Students for Concealed Carry on Campus.

And here in California, I believe that even long guns are banned from dorms

I agree, as a student at the University of Nebraska I would feel a lot better if CC was leagle. Here it is also illeagle to have a long gun on campus, if you bring one, it has to be stored at the police station.

legal and illegal.

The no shootings at Police Stations and Firing Ranges are extreme and I really don't agree with it.

Most of these shootings aren't just random people picking random locations. They are a part of the community, and for whatever reason go off the deep end and pick their location.

I'm sure if someone felt ostracized(sp?) at the range they might decide to go "postal" there. And I wouldn't be surprised if at said range, with all of those guns, a good number of people would act like sheep themselves, when all they'd have to do is return fire.

While perhaps true, it has NOTHING to do with carrying on campus. People need to learn the "defense mindset" before picking up a gun for defense, and should always have it regardless if you can carry a gun or not.

The second tragedy that day was that there was no one shooting back. Any potential heroes were disarmed by the school's "no guns" policy.

This fails to take into account the fact that carrying is a personal choice. Just because it is allowed doesn't mean people will. If people aren't going to carry, they should look at what they can do. This goes back to the correct mindset.

VT might have been different, since there were a few students who were legally able to carry concealed but didn't because of the school. That doesn't mean every situation would be like that. I'm sure you could find several classrooms where nobody carried concealed, or had the desire to.

IMO, the lack of the "survival mindset" is a greater problem than not being able to carry. A gun is just a tool. If you don't know how to properly implement said tool, its not doing you any good.

Round and round goes this topic, with which I have no disagreement.

Remove a persons ability to defend their self and you create a victim instead of a potential adversary.

If your a nut job looking for glory, or a criminal looking for easy pickings, what's not to like about that. :cuss:

These folks who are so whacko that they go out and kill numerous people are sane enough to pick gun free zones.

Remove a persons ability to defend their self and you create a victim instead of a potential adversary.

Just because you lack a gun doesn't mean you can't defend yourself. Has the best tool to defend yourself been taken away? Sure. But a gun is not the end all be all. If you lack the mindset, it won't do you a bit of good.

Its like for people here there is no inbetween. You either carry a gun or are a sheep. Like there can be no middle ground.

I don't carry a gun, but I'm not some helpless victim either who has a sheep mentality.

No disagreements. I wish we had CC here at UoHouston but... I try and make up for it by carrying my 5" pocket knife and sitting by the doors.

No disagreements to most of what has been said. The part I can never understand as some others have pointed out, is where the mentality to just stand there comes from? But it's widespread as evidenced by the assaults or even murders occasionally publicized where the victim is injured or killed in full sight of a multitude of witnesses and nobody reacts to help them. I don't know what training or philosophy will change the mindset, but we need to find a way to get there as a society. We have to choose to ACT.

As an example, on my first visit to the Holocaust museum I went through 3/4's of the museum asking myself why the concentration camp prisoners in WWII didn't just riot and take their chances. Especially after seeing a small display on the 3rd or 4th floor that describes uprisings at the concentration camp and demonstrates that in the few instances of uprisings maybe around 25% of the rioters survived to the end of the war and/or escaped. That doesn't sound like great odds, but was in contrast to the less than 1% survival of prisoners who entered the camps and didn't riot. So we ask, why not fight, barehanded? And hope we're never in the position to have to find out.

I can only conclude the answer is that "we" believe, wrongly, that our individual chances to survive are better if we don't stand out and we don't know the bad odds ahead of time. Hindsight is 20-20, right?

All of which makes the heroism aboard Flight 93 on 9/11 by (extra)ordinary people all the more admirable. They probably did have the time and information to realize that if they didn't act they were dead anyway, but they chose to act despite the risk to their lives and perhaps saved others on the ground. I honor their memories and I can only pray that if I'm someday tested I ACT in a similar way.

If you are legally able to carry a gun concealed, nobody knows that you have it. So, if somebody... if anybody on the VT campus would have been carrying a concealed gun with or without permission, there probably wouldn't have been so many dead college kids and instructors. True, he/she might have been expelled or even arrested BUT at least they'd be alive to attend more college courses later on. The whole thing about VT making their campus a "gun free zone" was nothing more than telling Cho, "Hey, loser. Come over here to hunt and kill unarmed people at your convenience." It was an ignorant feel good, warm and fuzzy act that caused over 30 people to die. Gun free zones = human hunting preserves.

Gun free zones = human hunting preserves

Exactly, then why is it so hard for lawmakers to understand?

And why don't they have armed and trained responsible adults in schools?

If I were a teacher, I think that it would me my duty to carry in order to safely protect the students. Teacher in Israel "pack" and you never hear of tragedies from threats foreign or domestic. I think that a big problem are those people who automatically associate firearms negatively and subjectively. I.e. "He, She, It has a gun, Oh NO! After all, they are inanimate objects

(I think I saw this line in someone's signature on this forum, it's really good: )
"I pack because I can't fit a 200lb. police officer in my pocket.";)
