I am considering joining the NRA but i have no interest really at all in long guns pretty much only handguns

So which of the 3 magazines would be my best choice?

honestly it probably doesn't matter.

odds are you'll never read it anyway and throw it away.

If you'll read AFF is probably the way to go....as you can tell from the title it is the one that doesn't deal with long guns.

I get American Rifleman. It has handgun articles, political articles etc. I pretty much look at it like Guns and Ammo or some other kind of general gun mag. I think the info is probably pretty similar to what you could find on the web. They do shoot everything the review and post group sizes with a few different types of ammo. That is pretty good info and not that easy to find.

What kinds of articles does America's First Freedom have?

Shame that some would just throw them away without reading them. :what:

The NRA really does put out nice magazines. American Hunter is geared towards hunters. Freedom First is geared towards the political aspects, and American Rifleman is a very nice combination of both of the other two magazines. Kind of middle of the road. Hope that helps.

I enjoy and look forward to receiving Freedom First every month.

I re-joned the NRA. Now I am a life member. I like the American Riflemen. My husband (Armoredman) likes Americas First Freedom. So it really is up to you on which one you like the best unless you hunt.

I don't know what you should get, but I got America's 1st Freedom because I'm more interested in legal and political issues than in the latest and greatest guns I can't afford. American Rifleman does apparently cover handguns as well as rifles and shotguns and other assorted gun-related stuff, though.

I get the American Rifeman but its no better than any other gun rag out there. It's all advertisement for some high priced toys. They do cover some military stuff if thats your bag. I don't get the others so I can't say about them.

Eh, I think that's a little unkind. American Rifleman does seem to have a more creative group of stories and some stuff that really drills down into the sport of shooting, rather than just cover profiles of the latest jamamatic from Nighthawk.

Isn't the third one about concealed carry? That might be more handgun specific.

+1 - 90% ad content or ads posing as articles. But I guess that is to be expected from a "free gift" magazine. You might also want to look up the NRA's 'donotpromote' email address. They send out quite a few snail mailings/spams. (Not a flame job, just a warning. I'm an NRA member.)

I don't think there's an NRA magazine that will really suit the handgun enthusiast. I fall into that category myself and, after having tried all three different mags, went back to Rifleman. Which usually gets a cursory read and is then donated or tossed. When I want interesting and informative articles about my hobby I buy a copy of American Handgunner.

I love American Riflemen. I like reading the Armed Citizen and learning from them on how best or not so hot to protect themselves. Some of the gun magazine rags are not my bag. I am a life member so I really like that. :)

American Rifleman does seem to advertise guns but in reality, I enjoy reading about the guns they test. Bruce Canfield's articles are really great...I mean academic yet very readable...and there are many other very good contributors that cover things such as the British confiscating guns when they controlled NYC during the Revolution or muskets that were used during the Revolution or the Sharps Carbine and on and on. It's a great read plus it keeps me up to date with area gunshows and matches as well as political info. (slanted my way of course) and the Armed Citizen. You can really subscribe to one and if you don't like it, I think you can call and switch publications. Check on that by calling if you are interested.
Good luck. You won't go wrong with either mag.
