Accurizing a Mini-14 target, Adjustable Gas Block??

Well I have some novice gun questions…
I have a Ruger Mini-14 target model and I have been getting at around one inch groups at 100 yards with it. Sometimes a little bigger…(wink wink) I really want to tighten that up some. So far, I have only messed with the harmonic dampener a little bit and I know I get adjust that better to improve accuracy. My question is, would an adjustable gas block improve accuracy?? I am not quite sure what they do. My brother has a SAFN 49 with an adjustable gas block. He told me that it helps some ammo cycle. Can someone help me out here a little bit? Would such a device improve accuracy or would it only stop my brass from flying 20 yards to the right of me?
I am open for any tips anyone has as well….
I don’t really want to send my gun in anywhere, so any alterations would be done myself. I would like to keep it fairly simple.

Accuracy International has adjustable gas blocks in their catalog. I really think the only way it would help is on follow up double tap type shooting, as it would lessen the slamming of the bolt against the rear of the receiver and stop some of the vibration , making it easier to get the sight picture back.

This I know for sure it will help on finding your brass, as the non-adjustable Mini's pitch the brass into the next county.:D

you see, I dont have money to spend on things that cost in the 1k department.
and, why would i get an AR when i have a perfectly fine mini, hahahha
I acknowledge that the AR platform is superior in many ways, but I happen to like the Mini's operating system better.
so the best advice in solving my problem of inching down the groups of my Mini is not to buy a different guy. Thats just silly...., and by the way I only spent 700 in my heavy barrel Mini. Show me a light barrel AR for that price

Gunsby, you have a fine rifle. it will outshoot many AR's out there & there are a few things you can do yourself to make it better. the adjustable gas block is one route but you can buy a bushing set for a lot less & at the same time torque & gap the block. this usually helps accuracy considerably. the smaller gas bushing will reduce the ejection considerably & lessen the harshness of the action. a trigger job is another inexpensive enhancement for accuracy. these two mods will cost you less than $75.00 & help a bunch. i've found the mini's are very picky about the ammo they are fed. shoot the best you can afford for the best results accuracywise. they will eat anything but you won't get the groups from the cheap stuff. a good scope, good ammo, & a couple inexpensive mods will give you a tack driving, good looking, super reliable rifle that you can go to the range with & be proud to shoot & own.

I got me a good Leupold scope on it already. When I first looked through it on a bright shiny day, I was amazed at the clarity. Thanks again for the advice, I am glad someone gave me some advice that wont break the bank.
 
I thought about that... but I am going to put off that notion until I build a custom mini. I plan on doing that sometime down the road. I just don't have the money to take on such endeavors at this point in time. I want this one to look mostly stock. Kind of weird I know.
but one day I plan on having a fully custom rifle, I just dont want to do it to this one... This was the first brand new rifle that I bought and it has kind of a special value in itself to me. Thanks for the advice though., And I wouldn't call it a fake heavy barrel, it is heavy, hahahahha. Its just not Super-heavy. I know that it sure isn't a light barrel.

An adjustable gas block might help accuracy but mostly it is to lower the gas recoil pressure so the brass doesn't fly as far.

I agree with railroader about going to Perfect Union Forum for the most accurate answers to your Mini-14 questions.

And you don't get a lot of "Get an AR" comments there either. :D
 
While you're at Perfect Union, check out GunDoc's trigger jobs - well worth it!

3.5# trigger that breaks like glass is a positive step towards accuracy.
 
If you've got a Mini 14 that shoots "around an inch" already, I'd give it up and be content with that. That's pretty darn good.

Trigger would be worth looking into. Groups will shrink with a better trigger.
