Storing Ammo in closet ...

I'm currently keeping my normal range ammo in my master bedroom closet, but that is attached to my master bathroom. I wonder, would having this ammo so close to the shower be an issue? It is in the next 'room' but I would hate to cause issues for long term storage. I've had it like this for at least 3 years without any issues, but what about 15 years?

Thanks for any info you guys may have. I was thinking about getting one of those plug in devices that remove moisture from the air? I live in Boise, not very humid here.

Do you shoot it and rotate out old ammo replacing it with fresh stuff?
You could try getting a Dry-Z-Air or something and see how much moisture it accumulates but it's probably not a problem.

Mine is the same way, about 5 feet from the bathroom door. As long as it's not subjected to the steam created by hot showers, there should not be an issue with long term storage.

That's my range ammo. I've got more, just in ammo cans and not near any showers.

Didn't know you were in college, but I 'm guessing you are single!

No problems from what I can see. Looks like you keep the ammo in better organization than in most gunshop shelves. The only problem I see is that you may run out of space -or the shelf will collapse.

I can understand guns, ammo & knives, but what's the deal with the mess kit?

You may want to get a gun locker, or some sort of locking box for everything just to increase safety from smash & grab type burglars though.

I also have ammo in my closet next to my bathroom with a shower. I'm not worried. I also live in a dry area.

The fire department might stick around long enough to put out a fire if you had it all in steel GI ammo cans.

That would solve your humidity problem, as well as being a heck of a lot safer in the event of a fire!

I think that if you had any type of moisture problems you would have symptoms like soft drywal, peeling paint and a slew of other things. You have no problems.

Ha. The whole area is kind of a mess. I was cleaning out a box that had a bunch of holsters in it and found that mess kit. Didn't have a place for it so there it sits. Those shelves in the closet are what my wife call 'crap' shelves. I also have 'crap' drawers.

Go to Radio Shack and get one of their humidity gauges. If the humidity stays below 45 to 50% you're good. A dry location would be better if you can find one. I've seen lots of water damage from leaking or frozen pipes.

Try your Army/Navy surplus store and see if they have any silica moisture absorbers.

You can put it into some type of sealed ammo box if you're worried about it.

I think it's ok.
