Like everyone else, I hate a brand new gun that doesn't work right. Question: are these the companies that seem to have the STRONGEST QUALITY CONTROL on guns under about $800, right out of the box??

-- H&K
-- Sig
-- Beretta
-- Glock

Or what is a better list?

Thanks.

All of those companies make good reliable guns and if they don't send you a flawless specimen right away they will make it right in short order.

Although, my vote goes out to Sig.

Unless somebody here is intimately familiar with the quality control management systems for the different manufacturers, it's not really possible to know.

All of those are extremely reliable. You won't be disappointed by any of those choices.

QC

Lots of encouraging posts about Dan Wesson products and their customer service. Haven't been attending to CZ; Dan Wesson parent company, so can't comment on CZ line. Ordered a DW CBOB.:)

Freedom Arms....closest tolerances and precision fit of any factory handgun I've seen.....ooops, you said under $800, guess that rules out my choice.

jennings, lorcin, raven, davis - all good buys. Super reliable and outstanding customer service.

I would personally add S&W to the list with regard to build quality, although I do not like that they require a serial number for the lifetime warranty. I do not trust the Commonwealth of Massachusetts not to go after that information, in the long run, even though I do not live in that state.

Are the H&K magazines hard to load?

I use Glocks right now (G19s with Fed 9BPLE) and have to use the loader for some magazines. I like the Glock but just want to make a change, maybe for a little better accuracy. And maybe to move from 9mm to 40. Although the 9BPLE is a real good stopper.

Sig seems to be a real accurate gun. But is that true in 40 cal? Sometimes you hear that the 40 isn't all that accurate. I don't have any experience with it. In any case, for best accuracy on the first shot I guess I'd get a model that can be cocked to single action, or get the SAO.

The H&K videos really hold the attention, especially being in German. Thanks for posting the link. I like some of the safety systems you can get on the H&Ks - like being able to engage the thumb safety when the H&K is in single action, unlike DA/SA, where you have to rely strictly on trigger finger control until you decock. (Do I have that right?)

Next I'll get current catalogs from Sig, Beretta, H&K and S&W.

I appreciate the help.

My .40 P229 is more accurate than I am, but that may not be saying much. ;) FWIW, I've been able to hit a paper target out to 50 meters with it, though not with such consistency that I would consider that a practical engagement range. Regardless of how good (or bad) the shooter is, there's really only so much a fat, slow pistol caliber bullet coming out of a four inch barrel can do. :) I have an early production (very early - first year, 1994) model gun with a German-made frame.

That said, every time I buy ammunition I find myself wishing I had the 9x19 variant.

You'd be fine with the DA/SA model. All of the Sig guns have an exposed hammer, so you can cock it if you desire. However, the double action pull really isn't bad once you familiarize yourself with it - certainly better than my buddy's DAO USP compact.

Love the Smith and Wesson guns but didn't list them because I've had too much trouble with some of their revolvers. (They did fix them, no charge.) My experience with Smith QC is one reason I'm looking for better QC gun companies.

Thanks.

g88,

Have you bench tested the accuracy of your Glock 19? I was in disbelief when I bench tested my Glock 27. You'll never hear me blaming inaccuracy issues on that gun. It's all me.

I think you have a very good list there. While I don't own examples from all those manufacturers, between my friends and I, they're covered. Never had a hiccup out of any of them. I will however point out that 9mm has always seemed more reliable in the accuracy department, not because the .40 can't do it, but because it has more muzzle flip/blast than the 9's. I have a Beretta in .40 and it does shoot well, but I can control my M92 better.

Thanks for the input. I think I will take the suggestion to benchrest my Glock 19 to check its accuracy. I know what you mean too about how cheap a case of 9mm practice ammo is, compared to most everything else.

Thanks again .... g88

I've always been impressed with Brownings :D

I imagine the quality control of companies that have been around for some time is probably pretty decent. At the very least, its sufficient to keep them in business. I myself am hoping to buy a M&P 9 in the near future, and I've heard nothing but good things about quality control as it relates to S&W, and good customer service for when the quality may be lacking on an individual firearm.

Every company has a lemon every now and then....

My first Springfield Armory 1911-A1 "Champion" model had the wrong spring installed in one of the mags (THR's 1911Tuner fixed me up). Other than that, Springfield's offerings have been very good for me.

I have several Rugers...again no major complaints, other than my Vaquero did seem to shoot just a bit left....about 2"@25 Yds...Sent it back to Ruger, had it back in about 3 weeks...right on the button now.

For me, Sigs seem to work better out of the box.

But, if you get a Glock that works right out of the box, it tends to break down less with higher round counts.

In other words, Sig has better out-of-box quality control, but Glock has better long term durability (if your Glock has no issues out of the box)

I've never had to return a NIB Sig. I've had to get a couple Glocks worked on for FTF issues.

Little experience with H&K

So far I've had good experiences with Beretta, but not a big enough sample size to compare to Sig/Glock.

Freedom Arms....closest tolerances and precision fit of any factory handgun I've seen.....ooops, you said under $800, guess that rules out my choice.

I immediately thought of FA. Every specimen I have seen has been perfect.
