Is it possible to convert a .243 to a .308 buy just changing barrels b/c isn't a 243 a neeked down 308?

the rifle in question is a remington 700 sps

Thanks
Zach

I believe you may have a problem with case length (.308 is standard action and .243 is short action), so you may be limited there. No bolt face changes needed, although you may have to check your stock for fit.

.243 Winchester Case Length 2.045 in (51.9 mm)..........OAL 2.7098 in (68.83 mm)
.308 Winchester Case Length 2.015 in (51.2 mm)..........OAL 2.8000 in (71.10 mm)

Yes, it is a possible conversion.

But it is a gunsmith conversion. Not something you can fake up in the garage.
If you got it done for half the price of a new rifle, that would be a good deal.

I think the case being shorter than the action is not as bad as the case being longer than the action. You can find a long action .308 but not a short action .30-06.
As someone pointed out the ecomonics of it may not be there.

Savage 110

If you had something like a Savage 110, and the proper head space gauges you could do a proper switch barrel firearm.
I have not done this, but I suspect that a handloader with experience would have little trouble with headspace on a such a project,

Yes.
It is a simple barrel swap to convert a .243 700 to a .308 700.

Simple if you have a barrel vice, action wrench, lathe, finish chamber reamer, and headspace guages.

Trying to make up for improper headspace by handloading is a work-around, but no gunsmith worth the name would intentionally let a rifle like that get out of his shop.

The knowledgeable handloader who owns it today may die, or sell it to some unsuspecting new owner who just buys ammo at Wally-World!

Then you have an Unfortunate Series of Events!

However, a gunsmith will charge you between $125 - $300 dollars to rebarrel + the cost of the new barrel.

SO, it might be much cheaper to just trade the .243 for the .308 you want.
