The move back to 9mm accelerates

Quote: I used to buy surplus 9mm cheaper than I could reload it.

No, you did not. You just bought 9mm cheaper than you were WILLING to reload it. I am betting you did not cast your own bullets. :)

You can never have too many guns, too much money, or too much ammo...

It's even harder to just have enough of all three at the same time!

I just bought Storm Lake conventionally rifled barrels for my Glock 19 and Glock 22. I don't give a crap about ammunition prices because I never buy ammunition that I can reload, especially with lead bullets. With the Storm Lake barrels I can do that with both Glocks. Other than for self-defense, I'm out of the store bought ammunition business.

You forgot to itemize the cost of your time.
How much do you pay yourself to watch professional and college sports?

I actually have something to show for the time I spend reloading, both in tangible physical terms, and in increased practice.

Yeah....I have noticed that my ammo prices have gone up....but I ain
't about to go back to a little hole 9mm.

I think word is getting out that premium 9mm cartridges are on par with premium cartridges of greater width. So what's to loose?

Love my .45 but have to admit I recently bought a 9mm so I could actually afford the ammo to go to the range. I don't particularly care for the .40sw round.

I think the evolution of carry ammo has something to do with it as well. The manufactures are able to make extreme expansion HP ammo that has capabilities equivalent to a .45 FMJ. I like to shoot alot so 9mm is just easier on my wallet, not to mention very easy to double tap and still stay on target.

I keep meaning to buy another 9mm, but I always end up with a .40 S&W. I did buy a Bar Sto barrel for my P226ST in 9mm to compete with, but that's about it.

The .40 loads do have slight edge on the older 9mm 147s and
standard pressure stuff.

Today's 147s and other loads in 9mm are much better in performance.

IF I have the urge for shooting anything in .40 caliber I have a 10mm.

Should 10mm be too expensive or hard to find someday..
The big Witness can be converted to 0ther calibers for $200
each kit.

The 9mm is the economy champ and no slouch for defensive use with modern +P loads.

When everyone thinks they need to get a 9mm again, and does so, the demand for 9mm ammo will increase...and the price with it. So, I'll just stick to the .40.

Hmmm, sounds like big diesel pickups and the demand/price of diesel fuel over the last 6-8 years...

Here its still the .40 and .45 I just bought a brand new S&W M&P 9mmc for 329$ store owner said he was getting rid of it because it had been in the store room for a couple years I jumped on it.

Premium Ammo

You can also get some good deals for SD ammo - more often than 9mm - that I find. Same energy, more mass, bigger hole - 40 is pretty good.

Hollow point 9mm ammo equivalent to .45 fmj? That's an understatement 9mm jhps can expand to .70"

Defense Minister, are you basing your caliber preference on its 10 year retail outlook?

Congrads on the awesomely priced M&P9c brian, that's a sweet gun.

My local stores are still having trouble giving away the .40s, less of an issue with .45ACP.

I still say 9mm makes the most sense, especially now !!

I still have my H&K USPc .40 for sale. I decided to ditch it shortly after buying it, because I realized that paying for .40 ammo over 9mm ammo would end up costing me so much more to shoot in the long run. I bought a Glock 19 and I'm stocking up on 9mm ammo and extra magazines. 9mm is definitely a good call for so many reasons. Obama just got elected so I need to be thinking practical here...

After a lot of consideration, my first gun will be 9mm. I can't really justify the price of .40 or .45, since i don't think the caliber is 50 percent or more effective, to equal the 50 percent or more cost.

I just added a third 9mm, a Beretta 92FS, and ordered 1K of ammo. No, I didn't get them because of the election, I just wanted the gun, and was very low on 9mm practice ammo.

I never liked the .40 S&W, I bought a taurus pt-140 because I got a good deal on it and then I quickly sold it. The recoil was rather snappy, much more so than my xd45. I'd rather have the increased capacity of the 9mm or the serious power of the .45 acp. The only .40 caliber I want is the 10mm.

The only .40 caliber I want is the 10mm.

I too have always liked the metric system personally... I have a couple of 9mm's and if I want to shoot a .40 caliber, I prefer it to be the 10mm auto. The 10mm ammo is double the cost of 9mm, but it has about double the power. The math adds up for me. Can't say the same for the .40 or .45acp

It's not much of a surprise, given the escalating price of ammo these days. The only reason to move away from the 9mm is the spurious notion that the round is anemic (it's not). In the right hands with the right gun, 9mm is plenty. And at $18 and change for a hundred rounds of Winchester white box at your local WallyWorld, it's a smart choice as well.
