I am planning on going hunting in about an hour and a half and I just wanted to know your opinions on this...Will having a dip (Skoal Cherry) in scare away deer or lure them? I would think both, but the smell of it is just so tantalizing, not to mention it's all natural so they would be curious about it...what's your opinions?

i never dip when im huntin but i would imagine it may scare em away especially if its somethin strong smellin like Cope but then again you said cherry skoal so.....i guess you could do a little experiment and see if you encounter more game when yer dippin or when yer not dippin

Yeah...I suppose so, I may save it as a last resort though, I plan on leaving at 4:50 eastern time so I'll put one in about 10 minutes before sundown.

I smoke a pipe...no, not crack.

While I am out in the woods, I usually take a seat and light up a bowl packed full of Prince Albert's Soft Vanilla, my preferred brand. (...let him out!)

If youve ever smelled it as it's being smoked, the aroma may turn you into a smoker! It smells sweet and aluring. I have had several deer approach met, coming from downwind, with thier noses to the air. I firmly believe that either they like the smell, or at least they are simply curious.

we used to be paranoid about chewing while hunting, but we decided that the smell of chew wouldn't scare deer away any worse than toothpaste would, so we kept our cope in while hunting. To a deer, both smells would be equally alarming we figured. It didn't seem to make any difference. I seriously doubt it will attract them in any way. You will be hard pressed to convince me that the contents of a can of cherry skoal is "all natural" especially concerning the lifestyle and habitat of a deer.

I usually smoke, but during deer season I'll pick up a can of peach or apple flavored Skoal to calm my nic-fits. Occasionally, I'll still smoke a cig every once in a while, but try to stay away from it as much as possible.

Either way, smoke or dip isn't going to wind them IMO. I've shot many of deer with either in my mouth.

Well, I've hunted successfully all over the world, and if Copenhagen is a deterrant, I've sure beat the odds! I have Copenhagen in my mouth from when I get up until I go to bed (I usually take it out then) and I've never seen any hint of a problem regarding animals, regardless of the location or species I'm after. I never have and wouldn't give it a thought. I reckon that if you were sitting in a blind or something, it might not be wise to spit, but I don't anyway, so no matter. If you're worried about it, just keep your mouth shut and don't spit.

It depends. If they're highly pressured, then any smell out of the ordinary will spook them. It may tantalize them if they're not pressured too much. More likely to spook than draw, however, regardless.

Back years ago, I was sitting out at the farm, enjoyin' a pinch-a-chaw, when all the sudden, "someone" tapped my shoulder and asked for a pinch. Hades on high, I turned around and every deer from miles around had lined up for a pinch! I ran out so fast I've never dipped since. :scrutiny:

Okay, seriously, I don't feel it makes a hoot's difference. My uncles took so many deer over the years, even though smoking and dipping that I'm left with the impression that it made little difference. Even when I used to take an occasional dip of Kodiak, I still bagged a deer. But the question is does it attract or lure deer? No, I don't think it does.

Any scent not naturally occurring in the area will put deer on alert. It may not scare them, but they will notice.

Having said that, I still dip while hunting. Just watch the wind.

Luck.

i honestly cant remember a deer that i have killed in the last 10 years without a dip in my mouth, and a puddle of spit under my stand, including several bucks between 120" and 150"

As far as I 've been able to tell, wintergreen doesn't seem to scare anything except my dentist. But,he's a bowhunter as well, so he "seems" to understand the "dippin thing"

The trick is to mix a little Cope with your deer corn. After one visit the poor deer are as hopelessly addicted to Black Crack as I am and they will be bumming dips while your squeezing the trigger!

IMo_Once the bullets start flying, anything that is not natural to the area will spook them. on opening morning, anything may work, because deer are naturally curious. but once their "instinct survival switch" has been turned on. almost everything scares them. it is a wonderfull tool for them. it has evolved for hundreds of years. and since now, man is their biggest predator, they can relax most of the year (at least to some extent). since opening day (at least here) was six days ago, i would suggest; no movement of any kind, no non-natural smells, and no noise (this is not to say you cant use rattling, or a grunt tube once they are in visual contact, but in my limited experience, it wont bring them in like a dinner bell at the ranch anymore). the best we can do at this stage of the game, is quietly wait for one to come along, and blast it when it does!

I've seen fairly tame deer pull a leaf baccy pouch out of a friend's pocket, then eat the leaves. Offered the same deer some Cope & she turned it down . . . likely tried it before & it got all over her mouth . . . they ain't got much in the way of a bottom lip. I chew all the time ,('cept when goose calling) and have always bagged game, so I don't know if it makes a difference or not.

ive put my ciggarette down to shoot a deer 40yrds away so unless the deer are getting a lot of hunting pressure i dont think it matters much what you do as long as you keep movement and noise down.

I dip copenhagen, have for years its in my lip all day when i hunt dont know if deer smell it but i have killed alot of deer, i used to smoke, when i stoped i started killing more deer and bigger deer, the one that smell you ,chances are you never know they were even there, good luck! Im on my way to the woods now! Csa

Not to hi-jack, but isn't smoking one of those things, along with eating,(this combines both) not to do after handling firearms, due to lead poisoning?

Well you aren't supposed to chew either because it gives you cancer... usually us tobacco users aren't scared of a little poison.

I chew cuz I like it . . . ain't ever planned on laying in a hospital bed at 108-years-of-age dying of nothing . . .

After reading this thread, I went out and bought a can of cherry skoal instead of mint or wintergreen grizzly last night. I don't know if it had an effect or not, but I did get a deer today:D

Man, I didn't chew for the first hunting season in a long time and I didn't get one! I wish we had enough deer in Arizona to have a doe season. I may have to fall back on the old cope for elk season. Don't know if I can handle cherry skoal tho...who would have thought this thread would be so popular?
