The government has realised that encouraging rebels to desert is more effective than killing them, as they bring with them invaluable intelligence and undermine the morale of those still in guerrilla ranks.
...
"Isaza", with ten years experience and a reputation as a ferocious fighter with FARC, finally decided enough was enough and had heard of the government's payments for those who deserted with hostages. He will receive almost £300,000 reward and a new life in France, far from the reach of his vengeful former comrades.

"Julie", a member of FARC for ten years of has managed to embrace her new life amid the bright lights of Bogota. She was a combat medic in the FARC and so is now studying to be a nurse.

Her experience puts her teachers to shame and she expects to graduate ahead of time.

Given this morning's exchange rate that's just a few dollars shy of $450,000.
I would imagine that's not bad for 10 years in the jungle in that part of the world.

Does anyone else think this sends the wrong message?

BTW, what are the gun laws in Colombia in the first place?

Sounds like it would encourage people to leave their ranks and give up valuable information, assisting local law enforcement in interdicting FARC operations and sowing dissent and uncertainty within. Not bad in and of itself.

Nothing else seems to be working.

That is probably dirt cheap when compared to the cost of fighting FARC and preventing new attacks. Furthermore, the members staying with FARC are probably looking at each other with a lot of distrust now and wondering if one of their friends might be the next to defect.

Or even worse - wondering who's already defected, and is/has been supplying info.
