What was your first hunting shotgun?

Savage/Stevens single shot 20 gauge. Still have it. And I've added quite a few more of them in 12 guage to the safes since. I just watch the classifieds and snatch any up that I find that are under a hundred bucks.

First hunting was with a bolt action .410 my uncle picked up in a trade. If you didn't hang on to the bolt when you cycled it you'd be looking for it in the weeds.

Then came a new Savage .22WMR/.410 that was a bit too heavy for lugging up and down the mountains.

My first real shotgun was a new 12 ga. Fox Model B I got when I was 12 or 13. Boy did it ever kick with high brass #6.

Looking back, my father had most of the sense in the family. He used a 20 ga. Model 12 that I got to use every so often.

A used 28" modified choke model 37 Ithaca. Took many a quail with that gun. It never failed, but the recoil was a bit hard on the shoulder. I was younger then and macho enough not to care at the time. Now I am older. I prefer less recoil and less macho if you know what I mean.

first shotgun

mossberg bolt action 16 ga. with a poly choke. alot of squirrels and an occasional rabbit fell victim to that gun!

H&r 410, then i went up to a 20ga, then i started having alot better hunts, that 410 almost ruined me ! But the side by side 20 saved me :d

My grandfather's 16 ga. single shot.
He ordered it and it was delivered, by mail, from Sears and Robuck in the early 1920s.

It was a great shotgun with a good kick.
Took out a lot of squirrels :)

He gave it to me a few years before his death, but needed it back for awhile to take care of some pests messing with his garbage. He died and....some of you might know what often happens to family heirloms during those times.

Mine was a brand new Mossberg ?? 12Ga. pump with a 28" full choke , bare bones that my Mom got me at the old Western Field store for about $70.

What I REMEMBER CLEARLY , that thing kicked like a mule --- yeah , I had just turned 12 --- year before Mom bought me my Rem Nylon .22 --Apache Black and Chrome !!!!!

Almost 40 years later and I still got that Remington -- the Western Field, was a partial trade in for my first Rem. 1100 ---- I don't miss that "mule-kicker" AT ALL !!!!

I did not start hunting until I was 16 as my father had no interest in it, which is a shame since we lived in the woods on 160 acres of our own and family owned ground. I bought my first shotgun from my pastor. It was a used 12 gauge Winchester model 140 with Winchoke tubes. Great gun, killed truckloads of game with it over the years until I graduated to a 3" 870 for ducks. I retired the Winchester then and only take it out occasionally now. It will go back into active service when my younger son is old enough to hunt with it. My oldest son will be getting something else out of the gun safe.

I started out with an over/under 410/22. Then I moved up to a single shot 16 gauge. When my older brothers weren't using the Ithaca 12 pump, I would use that. Finally, I bought my own Remington 1100 12 gauge semi-auto which I still use 26 years later :)

At age 8 an H&R .410, then at age 12 an old hand me down 12ga SXS marked aristocrat, finally a Remington 1100 at age 14 that I still have 40 years later.

Belgian made browning Auto 5 "Sweet Sixteen" still use her on Quail. 16GA shells can be a PITA find in some places. Usually buy cases when I visit Bass Pro.

10 years old with a Winchester 1300 20 gauge, 28" barrel as dad did not believe in youth model guns that I would outgrow in a few years. First gun I bought for myself was a remington Wingmaster 12 gauge in 1998 on August 6th. Would have picked it up on August 5th the day I turned 18 but they have that damn 24 hour waiting period.

The Winchester will be passed on to my son next year, he is due on January 23rd and already has a shotgun, a .223 that I've already spent the time developing a load for and am bedding the action next spring. I'm trying to start the kid off right but I have yet to decide which .22 he will start with.... and he ain't getting mine till my body is cold and stiff!

First shotgun I fired was a "long tom", 12ga. Don't know the make just remember it almost putting on the ground being just 12yrs old, and my uncle laughing until he cried. First one I owned was a J.C. Higgins from Sears, single shot 12ga. break open. Gave it to my brother for home protection, don't know if he still has it or not. Ah yes, memories.

ithaca 66 supersingle,12 ga. 30" full choke. dad had to chop about 3" off the butt so i could hold it right. hunted with that for 2-3 deer seasons then was using a 12 ga. 870 wingmaster.

Remington 870 Express Magnum 20GA. First actuall firearm ever and I don't plan on ever parting with it untill I pass it on to someone.

Ithaca 37 20 gauge was first shotgun given to me when I was 14 when I started upland hunting. Before that (and after for waterfowl use) I was loaned a 16 Ga. JC Higgins Poly choked bolt action for use on waterfowl since I was 8 or 9.

Remington model 10 pump gun. 30 inch full choke barrel. Grandpa traded the original barrel with his brother, who didn't like the length. This gun has never fired anything but field loads in #7 chilled shot and has taken everything from quail and doves to white tailed deer (not me -- my grandpa, back before hunting licenses were necessary in Texas) And, yes, he shot the deer with the shotgun at close range. They were hunting for food back in 1918.
