If you want a bolt action 7.62x39mm just uninstall the gas piston in your AK or SKS! Yugo SKS's are even easier. :banghead:

Custom Turk Mauser in 7.62 x 39

Well, a few years ago I happened into a Turk Mauser with everything wrong but the action. Barrel was shot, a few parts missing, stock worthless. So.. a project gun. I ordered a .308x39 barrel from Numrich as part of a conversion kit. Yes, it has a .308 bore. In a Mauser action, you can get away with shooting standard 7.62x39 milsurp ammo, but I handload with standard .308 bullets.

By the time I'd paid for the action, barrel, conversion kit, new stock, Timney Sportsman trigger, scope mounts, and labor for the gunsmith, I had myself a $700 "cheaper alternative" to the CZ. :p

It would have been worth it, but hey, since the action was made for loooonger cartridges, even with the mag spacer in the kit, it's finicky :cuss:about loading ammo with something other than FMJ spitzer bullets.:banghead: Let's just say it was an experience having a custom rifle built from scratch. If I had to do it over again, I'd be the proud owner of the CZ instead. :scrutiny:

I agree that the cost of 7.62x39mm ammo is one factor that would make it appealing. Still, it strikes me as an unusual caliber for a bolt-action rifle. The .30-30 cartridge that Elmerfudd mentioned for comparative purposes also strikes me as an odd round for a bolt, although I have heard that some .30-30s were chambered for this type of action in the past. Thanks for the answers.

The 30-30 would be an unusual cartridge for a bolt gun, but not because of it's ballistics. The rimmed case and mostly round nosed bullets would be the drawbacks on that one. The 7.62x39 on the other hand doesn't have those problems. It also achieves about the same results with a much smaller case and much less powder.

I agree that the particular features of the .30-30 cartridge make it an unusual choice for a bolt-action. Still, some bolt rifles have been chambered for that round as previous threads on THR have made clear. Concerning the 7.62x39mm cartridge, I have always associated that round with semi-auto and full-auto rifles. That does not mean the round can not give good performance in a bolt-action rifle. Rather, I tend to associate it with the particular actions mentioned above. Heck, I would like to shoot one for the sake of curiosity if nothing else.
