Bad guy looses
TULSA, OK -- A Tulsa mother is recovering from a gunshot wound after at least two men broke into home early Tuesday morning. One of the suspects, 15-year-old Cody Ray Payne, is dead. Tulsa Police say the residents were watching TV in the living room of their home in the 1300 block of North Irvington when two or three men forced their way through the front door with an assault rifle

another armed home owner refuses to be a victim............Wife injured during exchange of fire.
:)

Instead of saying the father defends his home with a firearm, and portraying the firearm as a tool, the writer makes it sound like guns are a menace with phrases such as "gunfire exchange" and "assault rifle."

I don't know - perhaps we didn't read the same article - but it seemed pretty damn neutral to me. Do you know what kind of gun was used by the suspects? If perhaps they came in with a ruger blackhawk - and the press decided to twist it around and call that an "assault rifle" then I could see your point. Not knowing the facts of what gun was used - kinda hard to say that they're twisting anything. Maybe they came in with an AK style rifle or an AR-15.
What difference does that make?

As far as "exchange of gunfire" - is there perhaps a better term to be used?

Kinda tired of this idiocy that unless an article is 100% pro-gun anti-bad guy - somehow it's a slam against guns and gun owners. Really - this was a short, quick factual article. Not a whole heck of a lot in terms of embellishment or political grandstanding.

Guys came in the house, shots were fired, one of 'em died. That's basically the whole article.

What is there to be so upset about?

Wow putting steriotypes in the news, there is something you cant read day in and out

See published works
CNN, MSNBC, ect...

This is apparently a big deal with some of the other minority groups around the country as well. I've heard of a few groups being targeted in different areas at specific times of the month for this same reason. I guess it's somewhat common of a mis-conception?

Sure, how bout "fired back at the attackers." Saying "exchange of gunfire" makes it sound like a careless and pointless shootout (which the Bradys say all gunfire is) when in fact, a man's home and family were violently attacked and he defended it. Saying "exchange of gunfire" puts the focus on the "evil" gunfire instead of the purpose behind it.

"So upset?" This is a discussion. You sure like to tell others how they feel.

Well I'm pretty tired of people who can't seem to make a statement without insulting others.

That actually wasn't meant to be an insult towards you. More a statement as to the mentality as a whole.

If i decide to insult you - it will be crystal clear

Oh really. Please do tough guy.

More a statement as to the mentality as a whole.
Oh, well how bout you allow others the mentality they choose without tearing them down personally. Think you could do that?

exchange of gunfire is a more "proper" or emotionless description.
What you're suggesting is to some how make it more dramatic to somehow encourage sympathy for the pro-2nd cause. Sorry, but I can't stand that crap. Report the facts, move on. That's the media's job - that's what they did here.
When the media pulls on heart strings for the anti-movement we :banghead: cause it's so ridiculous. It's just as ridiculous when they do it for us too.

The brady crowd will try to spin it as a senseless act of violence no matter how it's phrased. At least in this case of reporting, it's clear, to the point - and isn't sensationalized.

Oh, well how bout you allow others the mentality they choose WITHOUT tearing them down personally. Think you could do that?

Again, If i ever decided to tear you down personally - there would be absolutely no ambiguity about it.

I choose not to - because that's not the kind of place this is.

Saying "he returned fire" is emotional? Huh?

You suggested that the original term used did not cast the situation in enough of a positive light.
Therefor, your suggestion to an alternative phrasing clearly is meant to imply some sort of dramatic effect beyond simply describing the set of events.

Oh brother. Why do you keep making these tough guy posts. You can't tear me down pal. You could send me the most vile PM if you wanted. You could say your darnedest with "absolutely no ambiguity" and it wouldn't tear me down. Even if you "decided" it.

Lemmie know how it turns out. I finally found the ignore button

I find myself less willing to suffer fools gladly in my old age. I'm sure I'll be right behind you on that ignore button

Hispanic families do not have bank accounts, so they must have cash stored in their homes.

That's not that far out there I've never met an illegal alien with a bank account ( not saying it doesn't happen) so I could see the logic in that

Holy overreaction, Batman! Can we discuss the topic a little bit?

I agree that the media should report facts and not show bias either way. The only complaint I can find with this article is that the BG's probably didn't have a select-fire Class III weapon, so it wasn't likely an "assault rifle." Other than that, I thought it was pretty short, quick, to the point, and neutral. A rarity, to be sure, but not really anti.

Personal insults are against the rules, and y'all already know it. Practice self-control, or find another website. We don't give out prizes for Snark Of The Day. No trophies for Oneupsmanship In Cool Insults.

It is common for relatively low-income people to cash paychecks and keep the money at home. No bank account. It is a fact that many Hispanics are known to practice this method of money-management. Bills are paid face to face with cash, or via USPS and money orders. True for others as well, of course, but the people in the incident apparently were Hispanic.

And wasting bandwidth over newspaper word-choices or phrasing isn't really worth the time or effort...

Around 3 AM on Tuesday police say a group of two or three teenagers kicked in the door of the residence.

Juan, 14, who doesn't want to show his face on camera was right next to the front door, watching TV in the living room.

"He pointed the shotgun at me and he said don't move, he started pointing it everywhere, in the living room and all that," said Juan.
