How many of you don't get a kick out of putting holes in paper... Not to bash on those of you who love putting neat little 1/2 in. groups into bullseyes, its just not my cup of tea... I guess the real question is who here likes to shoot reactive targets (fruit, concrete, tannerite, etc) and whats your favorite things to shoot... also favorite calibers and guns to shoot them with...
I like destroying evil diet soda, cinder blocks, and pretty much anything else I can find at my buddies house that is shootable.. Wintertime is the best cause you can take all the empty milk jugs and pop bottles and throw em outside to freeze... The BEST targets!!
As far as what to shoot them with I've found 12 gauge slugs to be very effective as well as my .30-06... My buddies 9mm does good against full soda cans but not too hot against a cinder block.. It takes about a full mag to turn it into sand where as my 06 blows it apart on the first shot..
Overall I'd rather put the holes in the paper to make sure the gun shoots accurately, then go shoot something that gives me some feedback! :)

I love reactive targets. I save up all plastic bottles from work and home. Stash them away in trash bags in the basement for that fateful day they are dispatched. I also tend to have a surplus of squash and zuchini during the summer, so those tend to find themselves lined up for targets at the range down in the field. I especially like things I don't really have to clean up, like the squash and zuchs.
Dandelions, walnuts, golfballs, soup cans, soda cans are all fun with a .22, or anything else really.

People are reactive, do they count? :what: You'll never get the same reaction twice. But you can only get away with it if you're an 8 y/o shooting his father and friend with a .22, or a 4y/o with a shotgun. Or you can join the Marine Corps, but it requires travel..."travel the world and meet new people...and then shoot 'em."

I have heard that tanerite (sp?) is supposed to be fun, but I don't know anything about it (legality, availability, etc.). I haven't had the time or inclination to look into it yet. I think it's supposed to explode or something when you shoot it, from what I hear/read. Frozen water in milk jugs...tomato paste cans...eggs...even seen some Darwin candidates shooting propane tanks.

We did a great shoot with pumpkins for Halloween and also used bowling pins are great reactive targets. You can buy them used for $1/each from bowling alleys.

Those pins take a beating and we blasted them with 5.56 and buckshot and even slugs and they did not break. A solitary .45ACP round made it through to the other side on a pin but did not break it, just punched a hole, of all the rounds... strange.

Forgot... golf balls are also nearly indestructible. We also line up clay pigeons out to 100 yards or beyond and shoot them with precision rifles.

The 7.62x51 did not so much as dent a golf ball but it probably just pushes it more than penetrate the outer shell.

Oh yeah, bowling pins, those are fun. Last time I shot one of those was with a really good friend, fellow corpsman, and his wife at range on Camp Lejeune. He just got a pistol grip shotgun to show his wife self-defense while we were deployed. Before I could yell at him, he had the thing up and trying to sight it and of course the resulting split lip happened. The first thing he said was "..hey, can you sew me up?" His wife and I were laughing so hard that he got pissed and left...He was soooo pissed that he went to the hospital and waited hours, and then wouldn't talk to me for several days. Ahhh, good times... Oops, I'm sorry, firearms in the face shouldn't be laughed at...hahahaha

He missed the bowling pin too. hahahaha

wow I never thought about golf balls... My real reason for posting this thread was to get ideas on new fun stuff to shoot!! :)

I have heard a computer keyboard is fun when shot with a 12 gauge, all the buttons go flying everywhere. Though apparently cleanup is a PIA!

I'll have to try it sometime.

Old, broken small electronics like calculators are also fun. Computer disks with sensitive information? Why cut them up when you can blow 'em away :D .

Also, for those of you on a Dave Ramsey Total Money Makeover, nearly vaporizing credit cards like American Excess with a 12 gauge is sooooo satisfying!

The reduced produce section in some supermarkets is a treasure trove. I went to Shoprite once and they had a shopping cart full of cantalopes for .50 ea. That was a fun day. Coconuts are also a great target. And do't forget abou the little 4 oz Hugs juice packs. 24 for $3 is a lot of fun with a .22. And don/t forget the Gunny's favorite, Watermelon.

Baby powder bottles are fun also hot soda cans are great. Something else that I enjoy shooting is water balloons, good and cheap and a five gallon bucket full of them is at least a few minutes of fun

Get the little travel size shaving cream cans. Sometimes they are on sale. Thrown in the air and hit with bird shot they are great just watch the wind direction. Hit them with rifle from 25 yards and they go nuts.

+1 on diet soda cans! find cheapie stuff (sams club), or expiered ones sometimes. i recently bought a case of clay pigeons. i still have to make a stand for them, but they should be fun. i just had a thought, i know, scary. but anyway, here goes. next time you are at a garage sale, and find one of those wind up, or battery opperated baby swings, think about the possibilities. you could simply attatch a target to the swing seat, and shoot at that, or build a couple of support arms, and mount a target over the top to shoot at. either way would be fun, though if you built a target over the top, you would be less likely to harm the original parts of the swing. which would hopefully make it last longer. moving targets! i suppose, if you were so inclined, you could put a watermellon, or pumpkin in the seat and go for that also. oops, i have done it again. now the price of used baby swings will go through the roof. lol.

My favorite is gallon milk jugs filled with water. Watch that hydrostatic shock take effect, hit 'em with a rifle round! :)

I've been through this search before, and many of these are great suggestions, especially surplus fruits and vegetables.

However, I'm surprised no one mentioned steel reactive targets like these,

Auto poppers are a blast to shoot. Just don't use junk steel for them.

I also use biodegradable clay pigeons and plastic bottles filled with water. One of these days I'm going to spring for some cheap soda.

Paint balls can be fun
