Okay, I hope this stays apolitical, for that is my intention. Mods if it is not to your liking or becomes so, feel free to lock it up.

Another thread got me wondering how many forum members never owned a gun until they saw that Obama might win or bought a gun right after the election. Man, this is hard to word without getting political.

Alright, it's a poll, so vote anonymously if you don't want to reveal your newbieness and want to keep your interweb bravado rolling. That's fine with me, but just for kicks vote honestly.

Please no political discussion other than maybe some anecdotes about your coworker just bought a gun because of the election or your sister did too.

Nope. Raised around guns and hunting, but never really cared much about them until I started a family of my own.

I knew that I was the designated protector of me and mine.

Oleg's motivational posters were a large driving force in helping me realize that it was my responsibility just as much as it was my right to protect my family.

My wife and I have had the pistol permit applications sitting on the desk since March 06.
The election was the last motivating factor.
I also picked up a nice 870 in December.

I did ask my buddy who owns a gun shop here locally about that very same thing. He said they have sold more guns to new gun owners in the period of the three months before the election, and up to last week than they EVER have since they opened in 1986.

I am a "re" gun owner because of the political climate.. I have always loved and been around guns, but after the first kid was born the wife said "no" for quite a while...

Now she's so deep in 2a information she's almost ready to drown :) Took a little pushing, but she jumped over the edge and has seen the light. All it took was an election.

Nope, i got into guns becasue it is very fun, and builds maturity, something i want to teach my kids later in life. I ordered my first AR before any thought of banning, but i did buy a pistol the day after the election...nice black one too:D

Zombienerd,

That is a interesting aspect I did not consider or place as an option. Thanks for bringing up the "re" gun owner factor.

If I knew how to redo the poll, I'd add that as a selection. I was trying to keep it simple.

New gun owner here.

No, I am not a new gun owner because of the political weather. I'll try to honor your request to keep the thread apolitical, but suffice to say I am thrilled about the upcoming changes in our government.

I am more concerned about the economy and the general state of the world. (Even if I'm an Obama fan, there's only so much one man can do about poverty, desperation, oil availability, and natural disasters.) IMO in the last few years the chances of a serious SD, HD, or SHTF situation arising have increased. I bought my first gun "just in case".

Unfortunately CCW is not an option where I live, so SD is still an issue, but I feel better prepared for a possible HD or SHTF situation.

Zombied, perhaps a more complete poll would be like this:

* I am a first-time gun owner due to the political climate.
* I am a first-time gun owner for other reasons.
* I am not a first-time gun owner, but I bought firearms due to the political climate.
* I am not a first-time gun owner and the political climate has not influenced my firearm purchases.

Other options??

Owning a gun is a fundamentally political act. That's why it's included as a civil liberty in the Bill of Rights. Google "ineluctable."

But this got me to thinking. "When?" My great-grandfather had firearms for the homestead on the praries of Canada / North Dakota. (There's some dispute about exactly which side of the American/Canadian border they were on, but they're French-Canadian.) -- along with a dozen children, horses and wagons.

I recollected back on both sides of the family. They've always been there -- tools of the American West.

I'm betting Lincoln (Who was the family atty. for a colleague's forebearers.) owned firearms. I'm wondering if Obama skips over those parts when he's reading Lincoln.

Not "politcal." This is historical.

I am in a weird mood today, and I struggled with the word climate. I felt that weather was more appropriate because it changes fast versus the long slow shifts of climate.

I also did not want a lot of options because I wanted it to be simple, but your options look good.

nutter,

Welcome to The High Road.

I've excersized my 2nd Ammendment rights since I was a boy, Hunting, Shooting, Plinking and have owned firearms of my own once I was of age.

antigun mom, nobody in family owns any even the pro gunners. turned 18 and just had to buy one. all the years of not being allowed to have one while my friends had fun shooting has turned me into a gun addict

No.

But I bought a Bushmaster upper when they were getting sued by the Brady bunch over the D.C. "sniper" falderol.

Earlier, but by the time Clinton left office I had 2 AR-15s and a MAK-90 I had little interest in and next to no use for. Still have 'em. (mentioning Clinton isn't political: it's historical).

I had less than no interest in buying more magazines to put in a cardboard box or rifles I probably wasn't going to shoot this time around. Besides, back then it appeared the folks selling the things could use the business - this time, not so much - they seem to be selling fine without my adding to the hysteria.

I've had shotguns for a while, but with taxes possibly going to 300% for handguns and ammo... I got a XD-M 9mm last weekend.

You might ask if some one has bought a particular gun, because of politics. If it hasn't already been done.

Currently, five people voted yes. However, none (or one) of those people took the time to identify themselves and explain. The new gun owners who posted here were apparently going to be gun owners anyway. The bottom line is that getting more law-abiding gun owners aboard is a good thing, regardless the reason.
