Then of course there are the Leupold mk4's the glass is OK (VX-III glass) the M1 or M3 knobs are great though.

Also you can't go wrong with any Kahles, Schmidt & Bender, US Optics, Zeiss, Nightforce or Swarovski

I think I am going to go with the Leupold Mark 4 LR/T M1 Scope 56070, 4.5-14x50. Thanks for the recommendations guys. It will be a little while before I can put a scope on it though unfortunately. This has drained the funds for now. Tax and all the rifle alone will be $2500. then I need to buy another magazine, I want the bipod and a muzzlebrake just to have around. So all in all we are looking at over $3K for just the rifle and another $1000 for the scope unless someone can recommend something cheaper. Wow, thanks for the recommendations lipadj46. Perhaps I will look into some of those as well.

Would you recommend the Bushnell SS10X42MB Basic SWFA SS 10x42M Kit over hte Leupold MK4? I noticed your comment about t he glass on the Leupold.

The Bushnell Elite 4200 tactical probably has slightly better glass than the mk4 but the Leupold probably has better knobs. Still for the price I would take the Bushnell as they have similar warranties. For some though Leupold mk4's are the end all and be all and they won't hear of anything else. They are a strong offering though in the entry level "professional" tactical scope market though and hold their value well.

The Super Sniper is nice for an entry level tactical. The glass is not up to either the Leupold or Bushnell level but they are used by the US military (thye have an NSN #) and are pretty much indestructible. I had the rear focus 10x SS on a Serbu .50 BMG years ago and it held up great and the glass was good.

start with either the nikon, pentax, or burris, and work your way up in cost, from there. all the above mentioned will do a good job.
the bushnell , for the money, is a good pic as well.

lipadj46, I've got to ask you this ... do you own a Leupold Mark 4 scope and have you used one for extended periods under a variety of different conditions? I know you don't think much of Leupold scopes and basically put them down every chance you get which is your right, but how much "real world" experience do you have with them. I get the impression that your "reviews" are cut and paste from other websites rather than actual experience. I own six Mark 4 scopes but I'm not in the group that you describe "For some though Leupold mk4's are the end all and be all and they won't hear of anything else." I'm well aware of the fact that other companies make outstanding optics and some even make them for less money.

I hope that there's a Nightforce, IOR or Schmidt and Bender in my future.

:)

Hmmmm....now I have some interest towards the Tasco Super Sniper or the SWFA Super Sniper. From what I have quickly read it is a pretty good scope especially for the money. I don't know quite yet. I appreciated everyone's responses and I will continue to research for many weeks to come and decided based on that. Now I just need to figure out how much magnification I want and what I want to pay. I anyone else wants to add something I would love to hear your experiences. What magnification do you guys suggest? I was thinking something mid-range but I don't know.

lipadj46, I've got to ask you this ... do you own a Leupold Mark 4 scope

It has been many years (1999 maybe) and a marriage ago but yes I owned a mk4 that was on an M1A that has long since been sold to pay off my ex-wife, mind you this was before the last redesign. And I still say all Leupolds are overpriced by about $50-$150 to pay for the warranty and the marketing. I will also say that the mk4's have the VX-III glass and tubes which are good but other scopes have as good or slightly better glass for less money. One area where Leupold mk4 excels is knobs the m1 and m3 knobs are great and very repeatable but if I were to spend the money in that range it would probably be an IOR, Sightron SIII, Zeiss Conquest or Bushnell 4200. I don't hate Leupold and if the right deal came along I would buy another mk4 but not at the retail price.

I am glad you enjoy your mk4's (and have the good fortune to have 6) and I can understand why people like them. I don't really get why people like the VX-I's so much though but that is another argument. Anyways why is it a bad thing if there is someone around that does not automatically blab out Leupold!+1+1!!! every single time someone asks for a scope recommendation. I can do that if it will make you all happy.

Zeiss or Nightforce are the two brands that I have experience with, of the 'spencive stuff, and I like them both. I think nighforce is worth the money.

NO ... I think it's a good thing that you get folks to think about their options and there are many. I was curious if your experience with Leupold was current that's all. I would say that there's a whole world of difference between looking through a scope at a store or at a range for a few minutes compared to spending a whole day/week/month/year using a scope, looking through it for extended periods under different lighting conditions, carrying it around on a rifle, adjusting the elevation/windage/parallax, changing the magnification, the accuracy of the reticle for range estimating, the POI as the magnification changes, the focus of the reticle etc. The Mark 4 line is very good but I wish I could offer a comparative opinion other than simply saying that I like them. As for the lenses, they're all Index Matched (2004 technology) and the only Leupold models with newer coating systems are the VX-7 and VX-L lines where the new technology has focused on scratch resistance as much as clarity.

One plus for the Mark 4 line though is that it's used extensively by military and police units both overseas and in the US. I wonder what the military and police units think of them.

Will my next scope be a Leupold ... maybe not ... I'm interested in the Nightforce and IOR models, particularly Nightforce.

:)
